Today, one of the biggest country-pop crossovers, Hall of Fame rockers, small time 80s band, 60s girl group and the "cover" girl Queen! Kenny Rogers-So funny to think the guy started out by being PSYCHEDELIC! Should come as no shock that those songs are my faves by him! Big time crossover success in the 70s and early 80s. You don't hear so much about his music these days, but I see him on country specials from time to time. Recall him making the tabloids in recent years! Faves-Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Condition Was in), Somethin's Burnin', The Gambler. Rolling Stones-I don't know how to explain my feelings about the Stones. I have a couple singles, several CDs, and quite a few LPs on vinyl. I could rattle off a list of about 10-12 songs I REALLY like. But I would not call myself a huge Stones-head. I mean when you think about it, 10 songs is nothing in the huge Stones catalog. BUT, I do like them, and certainly respect them for longevity, and for being straightforward, no BS rock-n-roll. I just love the Beatles more! Faves-Emotional Rescue, She's a Rainbow, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, We Love You, Rocks Off. Romantics-Perfect example of a band whose biggest hit is NOT their signature song. (I will be doing a post about that soon, so start looking at the other boards! ) What I Like About You EVERYOBDY knows, but Talking in Your Sleep was their top 10 hit. Both songs are just ok to me, sick of What I Like. Faves-Talking in Your Sleep, What I Like About You. Ronettes-I like Ronnie's voice. Very unique and distinct, like Stevie Nicks. You KNOW it's her when you hear it. Actually prefer Jay & the Americans version of Walking in the Rain though. I've seen some of their collections, and I should pick one up. I'd like to hear their other stuff, including their take on I Can Hear Music! Faves-Do I Love You?, Be My Baby, Baby, I Love You. Linda Ronstadt-Ok, so she made her career covering others. She did it so well though! Great voice. (Should come as no surprise she was a major influence on Martina! ;) ) Her biggest hit was You're No Good, and as far as I know, it wasn't a cover. Actually, I prefer some of her cover versions because she modernized the sound on them. Maybe a Hall slot (in the same position as Johnny Rivers) Faves-You're No Good, Different Drum (Stone Poneys feat. Linda Ronstadt), Heatwave. And you?

Kenny Rogers - I hate this man with a burning passion. I really don't know why, either. He just gets on my ever-loving nerves. Faves - NONE. I cringe every time I hear his music.
Rolling Stones - I don't really care for them, but they're undeniable legends. As far as rock goes, I prefer bands like Aerosmith. But that Mick Jagger is really something...and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
Romantics - What I Like About You is a catchy song, but I don't really care for them as musicians. They're just average.
Ronettes - I think Ronnie has a wonderful voice too. Very underrated singer.
Linda Rondstadt - Great singer, and undeniable legend. I enjoy some of the songs that she did with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. Was it Trio that they called themselves? I forget. Anyway, I don't know a lot of her songs, but I love You're No Good and the duet with Aaron Neville was okay (w/ the exception of him singing on it). Her part on the song was excellent, though.

Kenny Rogers- Kinda like the gravelly consistency to his voice. Most evident in his early stuff. Faves: Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In (recorded as The First Edition), Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town, I Don't Need You, Lady, Through the Years. But my biggest fave is his trio with Kim Carnes and James Ingram, What About Me (all time top 250)
Rolling Stones- Kinda feel the way you do, Adam. I like several Stones songs, but don't go crazy over the group. I praise them for their longevity, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to a concert. I say their HBO special about a month ago, and was not terribly impressed. Faves: Time Is On My Side, Angie, Satisfaction, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Let's Spend the Night Together, Paint It Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Under My Thumb, Ruby Tuesday, Lady Jane, As Tears Go By, Mothers Little Helper, Dandelion. She's A Rainbow, The Last Time, Heart of Stone, Play With Fire, Miss You, Start Me Up. Hmmm. That's quite a list for a group I'm not crazy about. But, in the scheme of things, it's not that many. - and most of them are early Stones.
Romantics- Only know What I Like About You. Not bad.
Ronettes- Always liked the Ronettes. Phil Spector might be a loony and a psycho, but he knew talent and he knew how to produce. Faves: Best Part of Breaking Up (all time top 250), Be My Baby, Baby I Love You. Agree on Walking in the Rain, I much prefer Jay's version.
Linda Ronstadt- Really don't like her covers, but did like a couple of her originals or at least where I'm not familiar with an earlier version. Faves: Different Drum, Long Long Time, You're No Good.

Kenny Rogers : Try as I may, I simply cannot picture him wearing an orange Nehru suit with a peace symbol chain and singing about bees and flowers. Interesting and distinctive voice. Lots of talent, at least musically. Running a restaraunt chain is another story. Favorites include: Just Dropped in To See What Condition My Condition Was In Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town Lucille The Gambler The Coward of the County She Believes In Me You Decorated My Life Through the Years Lady Rolling Stones : I've never really liked this band much..and that's all I have to say. Favorites include: Get Off My Cloud Under My Thumb Shattered Miss You She's So Cold The Romantics : Historically insignificant but a guilty pleasure of mine. Really like their songs. I am totally burned out on "What I Like About You"...you couldn't get away from that song throughout my college years. Favorites = Talking In Your Sleep, One in a Million Ronettes : I will use what has now become a cliche here...I haven't heard much of their music but what I have I've liked. Favorites = Be My Baby Linda Ronstadt : Oh man was she looking good on those roller skates! Anyway...great voice. Should have recorded more original material however I think she'll eventually get into the Hall because of talent and her ability to perform rock, adult contemporary, opera, Broadway, country and Latin music with solid skill. Had a major infatuation with her when I was a youngster, hehe. Favorites include: You're No Good Blue Bayou How Do I Make You Heatwave Ooh Baby Baby Hurt So Bad

Kenny Rogers-LOVE his early hits with the First Edition. I remember my mother having the 45 of "Something's Burning", and as I got older I grew to like "Just Dropped In..." and ESPECIALLY "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town". As for his solo stuff, he got VERY overplayed in the 1979-1980 period, and none of those songs really did much for me.. Hard to believe that as big as "The Gambler" was, it only got to #16!
Rolling Stones-My feelings are the same as yours, but I really think they should retire already! Their best material came out in the period between "Aftermath" and "Exile On Main Street". After that, their career consisted of a great song here and there, and a lot of pretty crappy songs.. Although side 2 of "Tattoo You" is one of the best album sides they ever did. Despite that, I have a pretty long list of favorites (aside from the obvious classics), but I'm not sure of my absolute favorite song. So here goes: She's A Rainbow Lady Jane Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby..... Child Of The Moon Sing This All Together (Can you tell I really like their psychedelic phase) 2000 Man 2000 Light Years Grom Home Heart Of Stone My Obsession Tops No Use In Cryin' Sweet Black Angel Sway Can't You Hear Me Knocking (They'll NEVER top this!) Parachute Woman Salt Of The Earth Gimme Shelter Midnight Rambler Monkey Man The Last Time Tell Me Rock And A Hard Place We Love You/Dandelion Out Of Time Sitting On A Fence Waiting On A Friend Hang Fire Almost Hear You Sigh (This should've been a BIG hit!) Live With Me Stray Cat Blues Citadel What To Do It's All Over Now Play With Fire Miss You Beast Of Burdon Undercover Of The Night Everything's Turning To Gold Crazy Mama (Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker
not a bad list for a band I'm not a die-hard fan of....
Romantics-You would think that DJing an 80's night, I'd get a ton of requests for "What I Like About You". But no one has EVER requested it on my night, and I've NEVER played it! I have played "Talking In Your Sleep" though. I really like "One In A Million" as well as "A Night Like This".
Ronettes-I like them better than the Crystals. Of course, the producer overshadowed the group. All their big hits I have on the Spector box. They toured with the Stones in 1964 (I think the Stones opened for THEM!). Mick and Keith were issued strict warnings: "Ronnie was OFF LIMITS!!"
Linda Ronstadt-I just recently realized how many great songs she did in the 70's. She actually had two records side-by-side in the top ten one week in 1977, "Blue Bayou" and "It's So Easy". My fave, though, is her early 1980 rocker, "How Do I Make You".

Kenny Rogers - Back around 1989, I was surprised when I realized he had recorded 'Just Dropped In' - not at all what I was used to hearing from him! An artist I've enjoyed for many years. Favorites: Just Dropped In, Lucille, Daytime Friends, Lady, She Believes in Me, Through the Years, This Woman.
Rolling Stones - Like you, I wouldn't consider this group among my top favorites, although there are a number of songs I really like. Their earlier songs are great, but their 80's and later material has been kinda hit and miss with me. Favorites: Fool to Cry, Dandelion, The Last Time, Miss You, Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), Satisfaction, Rock and a Hard Place.
Romantics - I'm also a little tired of 'What I Like About You', although it is catchy. 'Talking in Your Sleep' has always been a favorite, and I like 'One in a Million' as well.
Ronettes - Ronnie does have a very unique voice, and their hits are always pleasant to listen to. I don't have much use for Phil Spector as a person, but as H2 pointed out, as a producer he did bring out the best in this group. Favorites: Be My Baby, Baby I Love You.
Linda Ronstadt - One of my favorite female artists. A very versatile singer who really made each song her own. Her songs bring back so many memories from my childhood, as my mom is a fan of hers and played her albums often when I was growing up. Favorites: Heatwave, You're No Good, Tracks of My Tears, Blue Bayou, Hurt So Bad, Ooh Baby Baby, How Do I Make You.

Man, what a group of 5 today!!! One of the best lineups I think there'll be.
Kenny Rogers: My fave country artist ever. Believe me, in 1979-1980, this guy (at least to my ears) did NOT get a fraction of the hype that Garth got in 1991-1999!!! And for me, that's such a great thing. Absolutely love his voice, and there are only a very few of his I don't rave over (Lady, All my life). Even ate at the "Roasters" restaurants a few times! Just got his 4-CD box set--it's SUPERIOR. Faves: (Big list!) Coward of the county (One of the best country records EVER) She believes in me (Man I LOVE this) You decorated my life I don't need you (This top 3 hit seems VERY forgotten) Ruby (Don't take your love to town) (His first I ever knew) Islands in the stream (w/Dolly, RCA's biggest single seller ever, nearly 3 million) The gambler Love the world away (My 2nd fave Urban Cowboy tune after Boz's) Just dropped in... Love will turn you around We've got tonight (w/Sheena) (just as great as Seger's original) Lucille Share your love with me (Didn't know this was a remake till 5 years after) What are we doin' in love (Mainly by Dottie West) Don't fall in love with a dreamer (w/Kim) Something's burning This woman Reuben James Daytime friends But you know I love you (Remade by Dolly Parton) Tell it all brother What about me Love or something like it Through the years Buried treasure Sweet music man Twenty years ago Every time two fool collide (w/Dottie) Blaze of glory I prefer the moonlight Eyes that see in the dark All ever need is you (w/Dottie) Someone who cares Love lifted me Real love (w/Dolly) A love song They don't make them like they used to Love is strange (w/Dolly) The greatest gift of all (w/Dolly) Make no mistake, she's mine (w/Ronnie Milsap) Scarlet fever Morning desire
Rolling Stones--My fave today! Deservedly one of the best rock-n-roll bands ever. Mick may have charmed thousands, no, MILLIONS of women, but my parents especially ABHOR him. No matter, I like his good range of "singing" and the acts he does on stage, quite a riot! Tour after tour, they just won't stop, making at least 5 or 6 appearances on Ed Sullivan, only because the fans wanted them back over and over--Ed personally never liked their music. Known many acquaintances (including my oldest brother) who are DIE HARD fans, one schoolmate of mine had every album of theirs. Forty years of music--truly one of the most durable spans ever. Love all their hits compilations, including "40 licks". Timeless music if you ask me. Faves--hold on! BROWN SUGAR!!! I can't get no satisfaction Honky tonk women Miss you (The single edit doesn't COMPARE to the original) Get off of my cloud Start me up Paint it black Emotional rescue (Don't like edits of it) 19th nervous breakdown Jumpin' jack flash Tumbling dice Angie It's only rock 'n roll (But I like it!) Beast of burden Street fighting man Mother's little helper Undercover of the night Lady Jane (their best B-side) Sympathy for the devil (Love the "woo-woo"'s!) Tops (LOVE it, from "Tattoo you") If I was a dancer (Dance Part 2) Hang fire Going to a go-go (Remember the video WELL) Time is on my side Waiting on a friend Happy nder my thumb It's all over now Ruby Tuesday Ain't too proud to beg Doo doo doo doo doo (Heartbreaker) As tears go by Mixed emotions Let's spend the night together The last time Shattered Fool to cry Have you seen your mother baby... Gimme shelter Tell me (You're coming back) Harlem shuffle When the whip comes down Dance (Part 1) She's a rainbow Under assistant west coast promotion man I'm all right Bitch We love you All down the line Not fade away Star star One hit to the body You can't always get what you want Love is strong Stupid girl You got me rocking Dandelion Dancing with Mr. D Come on Don't stop Heart of stone Winning ugly She was hot Let it bleed Rock and a hard place In another land (actually Bill Wyman solo) I wanna be your man I'm free She's so cold Wild horses Dance little sister 2000 light years from home Midnight rambler Too much blood Jivin' sister Fanny Anybody seen my baby If you can't rock me Play with fire Route 66 Hot stuff Congratulations Sister Morphine Love in vain Saint of me Rip this joint What a shame Citadel Memory motel Out of time Good times, bad times Little red rooster Singer not the song Had it with you I just want to make love to you Like a rolling stone Rocks off Can't you hear me knocking Black limousine Who's driving your plane Sittin' on a fence You gotta move Highwire Respectable Off the hook No expectations Mannish boy You better move on The spider and the fly Before they make me run Just my imagination Too tough Almost hear you sigh You can't catch me Sad sad sad Let me go I don't know why Live with me Out of tears Slave Loving cup Jigsaw puzzle Gotta get away Memo from Turner Slipping away ---whew---
Romantics--Great 80's rock! Especially LOVE their 2 best-known. Played their "In heat" album a lot in college. Wished they had more output. Faves: Talking in your sleep (forever top 500) What I like about you Test of time One in a million Shake a tail feather Tell it to Carrie Rock you up I'm hip A night like this When I look in your eyes Let's get started Bop Girl next door Gimme one more chance Diggin' on you Hung on you She's got everything New cover story First in line All that I want
Ronettes--one of the best girl groups, period. LOVE all their hits, spotless Spector production. Great take on Xmas tunes as well. Still prefer their original "Baby I love you" to Andy Kim's. Faves: Be my baby Baby I love you Walking in the rain Do I love you The best part of breakin' up Sleigh ride (best version) I can hear music (shocking this only hit #100) Frosty the snowman Born to be together I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Linda Ronstadt--What a lady. She definitely belongs in the Hall for her music versitality. Some 80's and 90's tunes I don't like quite as much, but no denying her chart success. Seems like a lot of her tunes were used in TV ads (Just one look, Get closer, It's so easy). Not surprisingly, my fave look of hers can be seen right on the cover of "Living in the USA". Another winner. Faves: Hurt so bad (Easily the best version) It's so easy You're no good Listen up! This was not even CLOSE to the original version. There were even 2 Hot 100 hit versions of it before; Betty Everett and Swining Blue Jeans. I'll step off the soapbox--Also, KILLER guitar by Andrew Gold! Different drum Just one look (How this failed to hit top 40 is WAAAAAAAAY beyond me) Heat wave Long long time (fresh sound for 1970) Back in the U.S.A. Blue bayou How do I make you Get closer That'll be the day Easy for you to say Tumbling dice Heart like a wheel When will I be loved I've got a crush on you Poor poor pitiful me Tracks of my tears Love is a rose All my life Ooh baby baby I can't let go I will always love you What's new It doesn't matter anymore Silver threads and golden needles Will you love me tomorrow Love has no pride Mad love Up to my neck in high muddy water Someone to lay down beside me Rock me on the water Don't know much Prisoner in disguise I love you for sentimental reasons Desperado Lose again Lush life I knew you when (not half as good as Billy Joe Royal's original) Heartbeats accelerating Round midnight The long way around Adios
Adios, for today!

Kenny Rogers--I've always liked him, mainly because my mom did, I guess. I saw him in concert a few times during the 80's, and he always put on a good show. A lot of his songs are among my favorites. Rolling Stones--Like some of their music, but the guys are just repulsive to look at. LOL! My husband was a big fan, and when we married, ALL 55,000 of his Stones albums moved in with us. Gotta give 'em kudos for longevity. They just keep crankin' out the music. Whether or not it's GOOD music might be debated. ;D I also gotta give Keith credit. I woulda thought he'd have kicked years ago. Romantics--Really like the hits that they had. Seems like they coulda/shoulda gone farther in the business. Ronettes--Ronnie had such a distinctive voice. I don't have anything by them, but I should look into getting something. Loved her background vocals on Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight". Linda Ronstadt--Might be a long answer here. ;D She's probably the first female artist that I really started listening to. She had such talent. What a voice this lady had. I made sure I bought every album of hers the minute they were released. She was a big part of my childhood and my youth, and probably started me on the road to becoming a fan of other female artists who could SING. I know most of her songs were covers, but, I think I said this once on Yesterdayland--by hearing Linda's covers of some songs, it made me want to seek out the original versions, and hear what they were like. And that can't be a bad thing, can it? Faves: (If I listed every one, I'd be typing for 2 days, and you'd be reading for about the same length of time, so this'll just be a partial list. White Rhythm and Blues (probably my all time fave by her. The lyrics hit home for me). Easy for You To Say, Different Drum, Long Long Time, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Ooh Baby Baby, Alison, Mohammed's Radio, How Do I Make You, Justine, I Can't Let Go, Hurt So Bad, Look Out for My Love, Get Closer, Mr. Radio, Rock Me On the Water, You're No Good, Don't Know Much, Goodbye My Friend, Somewhere Out There...many, many, many, many more...

Kenny Rogers - Kenny Rogers was great in the 60s/early 70s. Then he started cranking out country hits. Then he did duets was everyone. Then all his songs became TV movies. Then I got tired of Kenny Rogers. Favorites: Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town, Rueben James, Something's Burning, Coward of the County, We Got Tonight.
Rolling Stones - Always liked the Stones better than the Beatles. Don't know why, maybe it was because they always seemed to be the underdog when compared to the Beatles. Just great straight up rock & roll. Still cranking the hits after nearly 40 years. My #2 all-time favorite artist. Favorites: The Last Time, Satisfaction, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint It, Black, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, Tumblin' Dice, Angie, Fool to Cry, Beast of Burden, Start Me Up, Harlem Shuffle, Don't Stop.
Romantics - The only songs I know are Talking in You Sleep and What I Like About You, both good.
Ronettes - Another 60s girl group. Favorites: Be My Baby, Baby, I Love You
Linda Ronstadt - Ok, so she's the cover queen. All her covers were as good as the original. Her non-cover hits were just as good. A place in the Rockhall? Only time will tell. Favorites: Different Drum, Long Long Time, Heat Wave, Blue Bayou, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Get Closer, To Know Him is To Love Him (with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris).

Child Of The Moon Sing This All Together (Can you tell I really like their psychedelic phase) 2000 Man 2000 Light Years Grom Home Heart Of Stone My Obsession Tops No Use In Cryin' Sweet Black Angel Sway Can't You Hear Me Knocking (They'll NEVER top this!) Parachute Woman Salt Of The Earth Gimme Shelter Midnight Rambler Monkey Man The Last Time Tell Me Rock And A Hard Place We Love You/Dandelion Out Of Time Sitting On A Fence Waiting On A Friend Hang Fire Almost Hear You Sigh (This should've been a BIG hit!) Live With Me Stray Cat Blues Citadel What To Do It's All Over Now Play With Fire Miss You Beast Of Burdon Undercover Of The Night Everything's Turning To Gold Crazy Mama (Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker not a bad list for a band I'm not a die-hard fan of.... Mick and Keith were issued strict warnings: "Ronnie was OFF LIMITS!!" Linda Ronstadt-I just recently realized how many great songs she did in the 70's. She actually had two records side-by-side in the top ten one week in 1977, "Blue Bayou" and "It's So Easy". My fave, though, is her early 1980 rocker, "How Do I Make You". I was gonna point out how I liked the psychedelic Stones era, although many considered it a joke and the Stones of course reverted course and went back to basics with Jumpin' Jack Flash. Add Monkey Man to my list!!! Funny about Ronnie being off limits! LOL!

Just Dropped in was certainly different!
