Hey Adam:) Staple Singers - I only know two songs but oh are they good! Fantastic stuff Faves - Respect Yourself - what a great bassline! I seem to remember(or I guess that should be forget LOL that Bruce Willis mangled (sp?) this track back in the late 80's) and I'll Take You There Steppenwolf - Why radio ignores their other songs is beyond me.I have the For Ladies Only LP on 8 - track! a CD compilation and a few 45's Faves - For Ladies Only , Berry Rides Again , Sookie Sookie , Straight Shootin' Woman , Born to Be Wild , Magic Carpet Ride , Rock Me , The Pusher ,Move Over , Hey Lawdy Mama, Ride With Me and Snowblind Friend Cat Stevens - I like quite a few of his songs . They bring back great childhood memories . I remember Morning has Broken from around the time I was in Kindergarten. Faves - Morning Has Broken , Peace Train , Mathew and Son , Wild World and Moon Shadow. Ray Stevens - Hilarious stuff , more great childhood memories! Faves - The Streak , Gitarzan , Everything is Beautiful , Mr.Businessman and Ahab the Arab. Stevie B - I know I've heard one tune by him but I can't recall the title. Faves - none I have enough trouble stomaching Willis' acting, much less his singing! |

Staple Singers-Not bad, kinda gospel, kinda soul... Some big hits in the early 70's! Mavis is such a cool name! Steppenwolf-I actually know a lot by them, because my older brother had most of their original albums. I listened to them a lot as a kid. John Kay used to scare me, I thought he was the devil. Then I saw their Behind The Music and learned that I was right!! What an a-hole!! I don't listen to them much today, their stuff hasn't aged with me well, but I have a few things by them. Cat Stevens-I seriously need to upgrade beyond the "flag" CD. I love every track on it, especially a little gem called "Two Fine People". I see that he has a box set out.. That may be a little extreme.. Ray Stevens-Not an artist I thought much about, but he had some funny stuff, as well as serious stuff. His schtick is a little passe these days... Stevie B-Awful.. Early 90's prom music.. No thanks! If you DO upgrade, you may want to hang onto the flag disc because I don't think Two Fine People is on it!  |

Staple Singers  : One of the best family acts in terms of talent, yet they get so little respect these days...even nearly being passed over by our noble leader  . Mavis Staples could really belt them out and her sisters provided good backup. Pops played a nice guitar, especially on "I'll Take You There". These guys were GOOD. Favorites = I'll Take You There, Let's Do It Again, Respect Yourself Steppenwolf  : Can't even tell you how burnt out on the two big hits I am...and I almost never listen to oldies or classic rock. Seriously overplayed. Overall I don't think they were all that. Just a mediocre party band. Favorites = (or at least they used to be) Magic Carpet Ride, Born to be Wild Cat Stevens  : Political views aside, I'm still not a fan of Yusef. I don't ever think about him or his music. Ray Stevens  : A complete nut! Funny material for it's time. Guy made a career out of novelty hits with the exception of "Everything is Beautiful". I can barely remember the streaking craze of 1972 (thankfully!) but I do remember seeing some news footage of college students participating in this fad while Ray's other number one "The Streak" was overdubbed. The things we remember....gawd. Favorites = Jeremiah Peabody's Verylongsongtitle...., Everything is Beautiful, Gitarzan, The Streak Stevie B  : One of the bigger artists from the Miami/Freestyle genre of dance music that peaked in the late 80's. Like most freestyle acts his fast songs tended to sound very similar. Vocally below average. Had a HUGE hit in 1990 with a ballad, then disappeared. Good memories of my early club days and DJ'ing gigs. Honestly though, this guy didn't have much talent. Favorites = I Wanna Be the One, Dreamin of Love, Spring Love (Come Back To Me), I Need You (Yo, Hey, Check This Out), Because I Love You (The Postman's Song) Weird how such a funny guy would make a tune like Everything is Beautiful! |

Staple Singers - Very talented family group. Their sound was quite unique, a great blend of styles. I wish some of their lesser-known hits got more airplay. Favorites: Let's Do It Again, Heavy Makes You Happy, Oh La De Da, This World, Respect Yourself. Steppenwolf - Their sound was very cutting-edge for its time, and still sounds good today - hard to believe 'Born to Be Wild' is 35 years old! I have their greatest hits on cassette, but it's been a while since I've listened to it. Favorites: Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, Rock Me, Sookie Sookie, The Pusher. Cat Stevens - I don't agree with many of his views, but I must say I do still enjoy listening to most of his songs. Favorites: Wild World, Peace Train, Morning Has Broken, Oh Very Young. Ray Stevens - One of the best comedy/novelty singer/songwriters. His songs are great fun to listen to. Favorites: Ahab the Arab, Everything is Beautiful, Gitarzan, Misty, Mississippi Squirrel Revival. Stevie B - Not familiar with him. You could say this is the 35th anniversary of Heavy Metal then! |

Staple Singers - I knew that Dave wasn't going to let you slide on this group. If he had I would've bugged you anyway. Anyway, Boogieman pretty much said everything I wanted to, but I will add that "I'll Take You There" has one of the best and most recognizable bass lines in music. Add the awsome horns and you've got the reason why I never get tired of that tune. Are they in the Hall? If not they should be. Faves: I'll Take You There, We'll Get Over, The Weight (both their cover version and the one they did with The Band for The Last Waltz), City In The Sky, Respect Yourself Steppenwolf - I know that they have more songs than the 2 overplayed hits but I've never cared enough to investigate. Listening to "Magic Carpet Ride" you understand how it could become such a hit. It must of sounded incredible when it first came out. Faves: that one I guess Cat Stevens - Great songwriter although I've never really liked his voice. "Moonshadow" is an awesome song although I've always like LaBelle's version of it better. I won't comment on his political/religious views. Faves: Oh Very Young, Father and Son, Peace Train Ray Stevens - No no no Stevie B - I know the artist but not enough to comment. I think the Staples got the Hall a few years back. |

Well, I'm here--later than usual, but...I'm here. Staple Singers--Love the songs I know by them. I saw Mavis Staples on some show a couple of years ago, and she could still belt out the notes. Always liked her voice. Steppenwolf--I enjoy quite a few of their songs. Never get tired of the two biggies, and really like Rock Me and Hey Lawdy Mama. I remember my brother playing "The Pusher" really loudly one day way back when, and my mom becoming very angry at what she was hearing. She told my brother he'd better never play that song in her presence again. LOL! Cat Stevens--Most of his songs bring back great childhood memories for me. Faves: Morning Has Broken, Moonshadow, Peace Train, Wild World, several more. Ray Stevens--My dad liked him a lot, so I heard his music quite a bit in our house. Didn't mind though. Thought he was quite funny. To this day, whenever somebody starts to sing a song, I'll say "sing one, monkey" (Gitarzan). Heehee. Stevie B--I think I have the cassette single of "Because You Loved Me". Can't really place the tune right now though. Kinda pretty, if I remember correctly. Don't think I know anything else by him. Yeah, The Pusher had to be the first song with GD in the lyrics! |

The Staple Singers - I only know "I'll Take You There". I never picked up on the religious undertone untill I saw it on several gospel collections. Steppenwolf - So sick of them. I liked them - my parents have the albums - but there was a point in the late 80's/early 90's where they had this resurgence and I couldn't go to any party/$5 day/wedding reception without hearing Born To Be Wild, or Magic Carpet Ride - maybe if I don't hear them for the next few years they'll be ok again. Cat Stevens - I never understood the critical acclaim behind him. I always found songs like Moonshadow to be just lame little ditties. No offense to anyone who likes him, it just isn't my cup of tea. Ray Stevens - now you're talking. Good clean fun novelty act. LOVE the Streak. It is one of my Grandma's favorite songs. Stevie B - I only know the one song, and I don't like it (The postman song). He was a major presence in the Rhode Island area because my best friend's sister went to Johnson and Wales from 1988-1992 and she was always borrowing money from my best friend to go to his shows. She'd bring her back a poster or t-shirt. He was not popular around here. What is a $5 day?/ |

Ok - It must be a local thing because I get that question a lot. Do you know what a clam bake or chicken barbeque fish fry is? If not, I'll elaborate. It's an event held to raise money by non-profit organizations around here, like VFW, Fire Companies, MOOSE, ELKS, and in the case of the ones I always went to....The American Legion. You pay $5. It gets you in the door. It gets you supper (usually steak or clams or something along those lines), it gets you a band or sound system, it gets you snacks all night long, sometimes drinks like beer on tap or soda, and they also play games for money all night long like 50/50 drawings, BINGO, etc. It's a whole day affair for $5. It's fun if you have a big group of people to go with, and the organizations try to get the food and stuff donated so it's mostly profit. The bands and sound systems usually try to play a mix of stuff to make everyone happy, and you'll always hear: The Twist, Born To Be Wild, Wipeout, Old Time Rock And Roll, and several other way overplayed standards. |

Staple Singers - Real good soul/gospel group. "Pops" Staples and his three daughters did some real good stuff. Did a great version of The Weight with some country singer I can't remember on the "Rhythm Country & Blues" CD. Favorites: The Weight, Heavy Makes You Happy, Let's Do It Again, Respect Yourself, I'll Take You There.
Steppenwolf - Yes more than Born to Be Wild (Get your motor running, head out on the highway) & Magic Carpet Ride, but those two were so big compared to the others, it's small wonder they get all the airplay.
