Talking Heads : Good stuff from this innovative group of art students. David Byrne in those oversize suit jackets, flailing his arms spastically in the "Once In a Lifetime" video...that takes me back. "You may find yourself...behind the wheel of a large auto-MO-bile" Hahaha. I like this group because they dared to be different. Got a little stale in the mid 80's. Also liked some of the side projects like Tom Tom Club. Favorites = Once In a Lifetime (LOVE it), Take Me To the River, Burning Down the House, Wild Wild Life Talk Talk : Mediocre mid 80's Euro-pop. Not memorable. Tavares : Fine disco/soul group of the 70's. More of a poor man's OJays than the Spinners actually. I like what I've heard from them. Like the Bee Gee's version of "More Than a Woman" better. Always wondered why they had two versions of the song in the movie and on the soundtrack of S.N.F. Wasn't a smash hit for either group. They serve as a reminder that even the less significant artists of the 70's were still good. Music was definitely at it's peak back then. Favorites = It Only Takes a Minute (esp. the album cut), More Than A Woman James Taylor : Some of his songs are too mellow for my tastes, while others really move me. Sweet Baby James was the adult contemporary prototype for his generation. He didn't need electric guitars or synthesizers or tight drum solos to make his music good. All he needed was his acoustic six-string and a mike. Thumbs up for his songwriting skills. However, I really could do without hearing "Going to Carolina" ever again. Favorites = Fire and Rain, You've Got a Friend, Her Town Too, How Sweet It Is, Mockingbird Tears for Fears : To date, the best seats I've ever had for a concert were for this group. A buddy won third row tickets over the radio back in '85 and invited me. Good concert even though I wasn't a big fan of the group. They really kicked it out. Lot's more energetic onstage than in their videos. Vastly overplayed cuts from "Songs From the Big Chair" have grown tiresome. Earlier, less mainstream material is superior. Favorites = Head Over Heels, The Hurting, Mothers Talk, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Quietly Descending, Shout Ok, when I first read this, I thought you said "Going to CALIFORNIA"! I was gonna say, "Boogie, this ain't Zeppelin!" LOL! But then I figured out you meant Carolina on My Mind.

LOL Talking Heads - The Burning Down The House video was played quite often wasn't it ? I never really got tired of it though Hmmmm.I remember a buddy and I watching the clip of Once in a Lifetime and laughing at David Byrne's oversized jacket. I Like quite a few of their songs. My local classic rock station was playing alot of their material there for awhile, at least once a day. Faves - Life During Wartime , Take Me To The River , And She Was , Psycho Killer , Burning Down The House and Once in a Lifetime. Talk Talk - Yet another band where only the name is familiar - I never really paid much attention to them. Faves - Talk Talk (I guess) Tavares - Had a listen to "Heaven Must Be" wow it's been a long time since I've heard that - I had forgotten about it! Faves - Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel , More Than a Woman and That's The Sound That Lonely Makes. James Taylor - Like the rest of us here I grew up hearing his music around the house - Nice relaxing stuff (yes Fire and Rain is very sad - I like it though, and he is a fine guitar player. I still have nothing by James on disc ( I know , shame on me LOL ) the new very best of looks tempting - But I do have a few 45's as well as a few tunes on cassette. Faves - Carolina In My Mind (both versions) , Fire and Rain , Shower The People , Sweet Baby James , Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight , Your Smiling Face , Handyman , Mexico (loooove it) and How Sweet it is( To Be Loved By You) Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair was a very big album at my High School I think everyone (well except me) had a copy LOL . I just borrowed my buddy's and recorded the hits . I really liked them alot especially the very Beatlesque Sowing The Seeds of Love - excellent production on that loved it the first time I heard it. Faves - Head Over Heels , Shout , Everybody Wants To Rule The World (bought the 45) and of course Sowing the Seeds of Love. If not the new best of, get those 2 "white cover" greatest hits of JT's!

Rather than PM you, I'll just post my favorites here that slipped by. Only one that came across this time was a 60's and 70's soul legend. Johnnie Taylor.Talking Heads--Rather decent rock group, got in the Hall predictably on the first try. I basically like only the biggies though. But I LOVE the Tom Tom Club! Faves: Burning down the house And she was Take me to the river Wild wild life Once in a lifetime (I didn't remember this 1981 tune at all until around 1986) Psycho killer Life during wartime Nothing but flowers This must be the place Road to nowhere Warning sign Sax and violins Love for sale Memories can't wait A girlfriend is better Don't worry about the government Big country Crosseyed and painless I zimbra Talk Talk--Pretty good stuff, always LOVED "It's my life", and a great choice for a "lost 80's" song. But that Cingular ad got old fast. Faves: It's my life Talk talk Life's what you make it Dum dum girl The party's over Today Such a shame Serious Tavares--Man, a tough choice. But had to settle for 2nd today. They're not "poor man's anything" in MY book! Maybe next to the Spinners, my 2nd fave 70's soul group. Often a superior production from Freddie Perren (also Jackson 5, Sylvers, Peaches & Herb). Superior slow songs and disco greats. LOVE the logo! And to top this off, I have a CD of their "Classic masters", one of my fave CD's to listen to in 2003. Faves: MORE THAN A WOMAN (Vastly superior to the BeeGees version; the BGs version was played quite a bit in the spring '78, but not a single) It only takes a minute (LOVED this since age 6) Heaven must be missing an angel Don't take away the music She's gone (just as Great as Hall & Oates' original) Check it out Whodunit Free ride (If you haven't checked this out, do so, it's VERY similar to Edgar Winter's version!) Remember what I told you to forget That's the sound lonely makes My ship Too late Bad times In the city The love I never had One step away A penny for your thoughts Keep in touch Hard core poetry I hope she chooses me Ghost of love Goodnight my love Bein' with you James Taylor--Unlike Steely Dan, which I've always liked, I've REALLY grown into this fine tunesmith/guitarist/singer. My fave today, I have both Greatest Hits collections (not the recently updated all-encompassing 1-disc set, tho). I do have the JT album, but I just have to dig MUCH deeper to get into his album cuts (some of which I played in college). Should be one of my all-time fave male singers before long. Faves: (hold on) YOUR SMILING FACE (OUTSTANDING guitar from Danny Kortchmar, this is rapidly becoming a major all-time fave of mine) Up on the roof (Sorry, Drifters; LOVED this since Day 1) Handy man (loved it since current status) How sweet it is (BACK SEAT, Marvin!) Fire and rain You've got a friend Everyday (Let the fruit fly; I now like this BETTER than Buddy's original!) Her town too Mexico (Way down here...) Carolina in my mind Shower the people Sweet baby James Don't let me be lonely tonight Country road September grass Bartender's blues Hey Mister, that's me up on the jukebox Everybody loves to cha cha cha (orig. by Sam Cooke as "E. LIKES T. C. C. C.") Copperline Steamroller Honey don't leave L.A. Whenever you're ready Gorilla Enough to be on your way Walking man Something in the way she moves Never die young I've got to stop thinking about that Little more time with you Chili dog Brighten your night with my day Hello old friend Summer's here Secret o' life Stand and fight (Strange but true: I remember this on MTV!) Rainy day man Only one Long ago and far away (NOT the old 40's tune) Family man You make it easy Junkie's lament Riding on a railroad Woman's gotta have it Shed a little light One man parade That's why I'm here Places in my past I will follow Sun on the moon Terra nova Valentines day Mud slide slim A song for you far away Traffic jam Baby boom baby If I keep my heart out of sight Oh Susannah Hard times Another day Circle round the sun There we are Only a dream in Rio Slap leather Brother trucker Walking my baby back home Millworker I was only telling a lie Oh baby, don't lose your lip on me Sweet potato pie Believe it or not Limousine driver On the 4th of July Like everyone she knows That lonesome road Soldiers Another grey morning Lighthouse B.S.U.R. Tears for Fears--Only from the 80's and couldn't fit in much anywhere else. Strangely, I was not familiar with "The Hurting" album until a year after "Big Chair" hit big. But I still plan to burn some tunes from them shortly (the CD BETTER have the long version of "Shout"). Faves: Shout (LOVED this from Day one, left "Rule" in the DUST) Sowing the seeds of love Head over heels (this WAS a live recording) Break it down again (great song, but how this hit among hip-hop tunes puzzled me) Everybody wants to rule the world (have an extended mix on "Billboard Top Dance Hits 1985") I believe Mothers talk Woman in chains Broken Change (never heard it until 1987) Advice for the young at heart The hurting Listen Elemental Mad world Working hour Goodnight song Pale shelter God's mistake I don't like the Drifter's version of Roof as much either-but my fave version is by the Cryan' Shames! Check theirs out!

Excellent lineup today. I wish I had more time to comment. Talking Heads - My mother's favorite group of all time. In the mid to late 70s when all of my friend's moms were going to PTA and Girl Scout meetings, my mom was traveling up to NYC to go to clubs like CBGBs to see this band of art school geeks. She'd leave my dad for David Byrne in a heartbeat. Anyway, personally I've never been able to really get on board with most of their music although there are a few tunes that I dig. Faves: Take Me To The River, Girlfriend Is Better, And She Was, Once In A Lifetime, Burning Down the House (although overplayed) Talk Talk - I've never liked their two biggest hits that you mentioned, but I do like "Dum Dum Girl". Tavares - I like your description of them being the "poor man's Spinners". I like their harmonies and their stuff is undeniably fun to dance to. Faves: It Only Takes A Minute, Heaven Must Be Missing..., Whodunit, Don't Take Away The Music, More Than A Woman James Taylor - My fave today and everyday. Is it wrong that I desperately want to marry this man and have 20 of his babies? JT was one of the first artists that I developed a love for that wasn't related to anything my parents were listening to. Sure they had a couple of his albums, but I became a much bigger fan on my own. I have every single thing that he's ever put out, and I'm loyal probably to a fault because I love all of his stuff even the albums that are admittedly not well done at all. When you think about how long it took this seemingly mild-mannered man to kick heroin, it's amazing that he was was able to create such awesome music and that he felt comfortable enough to share his struggle with this drug on so many of his songs is really inspiring. My top 3 albums from Taylor are "In The Pocket", "JT", and "Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon". I'll jump off the JT love train long enough to list just a few (ha ha) of my fave singles in no real order past the first 10: You Can Close Your Eyes Daddy's All Gone Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight Love Has Brought Me Around Enough To Be On Your Way Another Grey Morning Hey Mister That's Up On The Jukebox Ananas (James singing in French - so sexy!!) Knockin' Around The Zoo Sweet Baby James Fire And Rain If I Keep My Heart Out Of Sight You've Got A Friend Long Ago And Far Away Walking Man How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) Mexico Shower The People Brighten Your Night With My Day Night Owl Rainy Day Man Circle Around the Sun Blues Is Just a Bad Dream Carolina In My Mind Handy Man Your Smiling Face Up On The Roof Only A Dream In Rio Slow Burning Love Country Road Her Town Too (duet with JD Souther) That's Why I'm Here - J. Taylor Everyday Song for You Far Away Never Die Young (I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' 'Bout That Shed a Little Light Another Day Little More Time With You Tears For Fears - Another group that was a big part of my early teen years. I like their earlier stuff better than their hits. Faves: Mad World, Pale Shelter, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Shout Your mom was pretty hip, musically! My parents weren't digging as much new music by the time the Heads came out. Nice write up on JT.

Talking Heads - I was never a huge fan of theirs, but the songs I've heard so far are pretty catchy. One of these days I might investigate more closely. Favorites: Burning Down the House, And She Was. Talk Talk - I really only know 'It's My Life', and it's always been a huge favorite. I have it on a K-tel cassette. Tavares - Great 70's soul group, very similar to the Spinners in style. I have their Best of LP, and it's solid all the way through. Favorites: It Only Takes A Minute, Whodunit, Don't Take Away the Music, Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel, More Than a Woman, Free Ride. James Taylor - I've liked his music ever since I was young, but have grown to love it even more as I've grown older. His songs have such a timeless quality to them. Favorites: How Sweet It Is, Shower the People, Your Smiling Face, Up On the Roof, Handy Man, Fire and Rain, You've Got a Friend, Her Town Two, Secret O'Life, Mexico. Tears For Fears - One of my favorite 80's groups! I loved the songs from their album Songs From the Big Chair in my senior year of high school, and still do today. But my favorite is 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' - in my top 10 songs of the 80's, most definitely. Other favorites: Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Head Over Heels, Shout, Tears Roll Down. I think as an adult you learn to appreciate JT more.

Back from vacation and ready to catch up! Talking Heads-Love 'em! One of my favorite groups of the "first wave of New Wave". I became a BIG fan of this group in the late 80s after I saw David Byrne live. Started with "Stop Making Sense", then eventually bought all their albums. My faves are the first 3: "Talking Heads 77", "More Songs About Buildings and Food" and ESPECIALLY "Fear Of Music"!!! The later albums are pretty good, and contain lots of great music, but to me are not as good as the first 3. Avoid the last album "Naked", it's not among their best work.. Talk Talk-Another great New Wave group, although I only own the Best Of CD. Some great cuts! Faves-Life's What You Make It, It's My Life, Talk Talk, Such A Shame, My Foolish Friend.. Tavares-Did some good records in the 70's. I only know the hits, but they were all good! James Taylor-I own both volumes of Greatest Hits, but I like the first one better. He was a very talented singer/songwriter, and I love listening to him. He also made the film "Two Lane Blacktop" with Dennis Wilson, which I have on video. Tears For Fears-Like the first 3 albums a LOT, but didn't like them as much after Curt Smith left. I could always hear (in my mind) the missing harmonies Curt WOULD HAVE sang if he were still there. But for a short time, they OWNED the 80's! Faves:Change, Pale Shelter, The Way You Are, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Head Over Heels, Break It Down Again, Listen, Mother's Talk.. Now to go back and get the days I missed... I didn't know Tears for Fears recorded without the one dude!

Talking Heads & Talk Talk - Don't know either. Maybe I should have been paying more attention when people were talking about this groups. Tavares - If you can only take a Saturday Night Fever song to #32 in the charts, in 1978, can you really be that good. Favorites: none James Taylor - The first time I heard Fire & Rain and then You've Got a Friend, I was hooked. One of the best of the singer/songwriters. Surprised it took a few extra years to get into the RockHall. Great artist. Favorites: Fire & Rain, Steamroller Blues, Mexico, You've Got A Friend, How Sweet It Is, Mockingbird (with Carly Simon). Tears For Fears - Only really know their two #1s. EveryBody Wants to Rule the World & Shout would be my only known favorites. Surprised you don't know the Talking Heads at all. I think you'd like them more than Talk Talk .

Talking Heads--Really like this group a lot. David Byrne is so...quirky! They dared to be different, and I like that about them. Faves: Burning Down the House (not to be confused with the movie "Bringing Down the House". LOL!), And She Was, Once in a Lifetime, Take Me to the River, Road to Nowhere, Life During Wartime (LOVE it). Talk Talk--I probably know the two songs you mentioned--the titles sound familiar, but the tunes aren't coming to me right now. Tavares--Like 'em, but never think about them much. James Taylor--Such great memories of his music when I was growing up. Absolutely love the guy. Seems he always had a song for every mood I was in. Faves: You've Got a Friend, Mexico, Carolina in My Mind, Fire and Rain, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, Shower the People (LOVE IT), Sweet Baby James, Country Road, Steamroller, so many more... Tears for Fears--They never impressed me much. Their songs got real old, real fast. I prefer Elvis' live cover of Steamroller to JT's!

Better today. Talking Heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - LOVE them. So innovative. Their style never goes out. Get the Sand In The Vaseline set - its 2 discs but worth it. Favorites: Psycho Killer, Burning Down The House, Once In A Lifetime (very favorite), And She Was, Wild Wild Life, Life During Wartime, Take Me To The River, Girlfriend Is Better, Road To Nowhere Talk Talk - sick of Talk Talk, and growing sick of It's My Life - they are popular on commericals. Tavares - I like them ok - Favorites: Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, and their version of More Than A Woman rivals the BeeGees James Taylor - PASS - I guess he's a take it or leave it artist - I'm leaving it Tears For Fears!!!!!!Yay again. They have my single most favorite line in a song: "Welcome to your life, there's no turning back". Favorites: Shout, Woman In Chains, The Hurting, Mothers Talk, Seeds Of Love, Head Over Heels, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, and my very favorite (which I'm glad someone else listed - yay Pete70s) Break It Down Again. The only GH package that offers it is the Millenium Masters one. BTW, Sat, I saw that there is now a VOL 2 to that new Supertramp GH package, and it has your song on it. I shoulda known this was a good Railyn day! At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, I think I knew that about Supertramp, Vol 2. I just didn't want to get it with nothing else good on it. Thanks thought!

Talking Heads - I know I've heard some of their music, but I can't remember what, and looking at the list of titles, I still can't remember. Talk Talk - (There was also The Sweet Inspirations, Dr. Feelgood, and the original -- Bo Diddley) Don't know Talk Talk's music Tavares - I agree with Dave. Their version of More Than a Woman is an order of magnitude better than the Bee Gees version. It's in my all time top 250. Other faves: Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, It Only Takes a Minute. James Taylor - Great understated folksinger. His version of You've Got A Friend is in my all time top 250. Other faves: Fire and Rain (as sad as it is), Sweet Baby James, Carolina In My Mind, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight and very good covers of Handy Man and How Sweet it Is. (Don't like his cover of Everyday, though) Tears For Fears - They came out just about the time I was losing interest. They are one of the groups I've gone back and listened to more recently, however. Kinda like them. Faves: Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Sowing the Seeds of Love, Head over Heels Wow, that surprises me that you and dodger aren't familiar with the Heads. Maybe they only got play in certain areas???

James Taylor-I liked him a LOT in the 70s, not so much any more. If I had to choose, I suppose I like his version of Handyman the best. Whether or not I like Fire and Rain depends on my mood. Tears For Fears-I know they filmed one of their videos not too far from here. (Or at least part of it) It happens that it's the video of my favorite song of theirs--Everybody Wants to Rule the World. His take on Handyman is pretty good!
