We're going back 22 years for this one. Here's a look at the top 10 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart for May 23, 1981.
10. Watching the Wheels - John Lennon 9. Too Much Time on My Hands - Styx 8. Sukiyaki - A Taste of Honey 7. Living Inside Myself - Gino Vannelli 6. Take It on the Run - REO Speedwagon 5. Stars on 45 Medley - Stars on 45 4. Angel of the Morning - Juice Newton 3. Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington, Jr. 2. Being With You - Smokey Robinson 1. Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Wow this list takes me back! Styx and REO-so "of the times"! Those two albums were huge with the up and coming radio listeners. I don't think I realized how high those two singles went on the charts! Bette Davis Eyes was a huge hit, and of course, I had the single. I remember Stars on 45 coming out and my dad getting it. That was where I learned some Beatles songs, like No Reply! LOL! I eventually found the cassette of that album, with an extended version on it!

This was around the time I was taking a field trip to Washington D.C. with other 7th graders who were school safety patrols. That was a fun overnight trip by Amtrak train to our nation's capital. I enjoyed the Smithsonian Institution the most. There aren't many songs here that I like today unfortunately. "Being With You" is an excellent track...very mellow and silky and positive. Stars on 45 was fun but the concept got a little tired as it became a trend leading to Hooked on Classics, The Beatles Movie Medley, and lesser known imitators. "Bette Davis Eyes" was number one for nine weeks and you could not turn on the radio without hearing it in the spring of 1981. "Watching the Wheels" is a song I've come to appreciate more now that I understand the lyrics. We were still reeling from the tragic loss of John Lennon

I can remember 'Take It on the Run' and 'Too Much Time on My Hands' getting a LOT of airplay back then, but the songs were so great, I never minded too much. That's exactly how I first heard 'No Reply' also, along with 'I'll Be Back' and 'You're Gonna Lose That Girl'! I practically wore that record out! I'll bet that extended version is awesome!

'Watching the Wheels' is my favorite track from Double Fantasy.

I remember a lot of those Stars on 45 spinoffs - I think there was a Beach Boys one and a Stevie Wonder one, in addition to the ones you mentioned. I can really identify with the lyrics to 'Watching the Wheels'. Like you, I've grown to appreciate that song more and more as I've gotten older.

Actually, there WAS a Beach Boys medley like that not too long after, but unlike the Beatles Stars on 45 one, the Beach Boys one was actually THEM!

Sukiyaki! Man--I haven't thought about that song for years! I always liked it, but I can remember them on some show (Solid Gold or something) performing that song. They did a very bad job of lip-synching. LOL!
Always liked the Styx song, cuz back then, I could relate to the line "I've got dozens of friends, and the fun never ends, that is as long as I'm buying". My friends were moochers. LOL!
Seems like "Bette Davis Eyes" was all over the radio back then. And the video was played constantly, too. You couldn't escape it. Good song, though. I enjoyed it. Still do!

'Sukiyaki' is great, but it's been ages since I've heard it on the radio. LOL about the lip-synching! Oh, I can relate about 'Too Much Time' - that line described me perfectly in 1985-86, my senior year of high school!!
