Let's take a look at the songs that occupied the top 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on May 26, 1984.
10. Hold Me Now – Thompson Twins 9. Breakdance – Irene Cara 8. Sister Christian – Night Ranger 7. The Reflex – Duran Duran 6. To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before – Julio Iglesias & Willie Nelson 5. Oh Sherrie – Steve Perry 4. Against All Odds – Phil Collins 3. Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper 2. Hello – Lionel Richie 1. Let’s Hear It for the Boy – Deniece Williams
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn
Pretty good chart. Hold Me Know - Acutally have this album on vinyl Breakdance - no comment Sister Christian - Good song by Night Ranger (saw them live on Saturday night) The Reflex - I actually like this song by Duran Duran To All the Girls I've Loved Before - Didn't like this song. Oh Sherry/Against All Odds/Hello - Good songs by Steve, Phil, and Lionel Time after Time - My favorite Cyndi Lauper song Let's Here it for the Boy - Probably my least favorite Footloose song

This was probably the peak of me and my buddy listening to Top 40 radio and going to the record store to pick up that station's top 40 list!
LOVE Hold Me Now, to this day, and it brings back memories!
Great Night Ranger and Steve Perry tunes!
I'm not big on Phil's solo ballads, but this one isn't as bad.
Dawn, the best part of this feature is that you do the week we are in, so you get TOTAL flashbacks, ya know?

Not a bad list. Breakdance. Boy, that takes me back. LOL! Never liked Duran Duran much, but The Reflex is a pretty good song. Hold Me Now, Oh Sherrie, and Time After Time are my favorites from the list. Used to listen to "Footloose" all the time, and Let's Hear it for the Boy brings back memories of those times, and that movie. The only song here that makes me cringe is To All the Girls I've Loved Before. Ick. ;D

I remember that time well! I'd never heard "Breakdance" until years later, (totally missed that one), and I always thought that "Oh, Sherrie" and "Sister Christian" were hits later in the year. I guess I heard them later than everybody else did..

I remember Night Ranger was very popular around the time of this chart, largely because of 'Sister Christian'. That's great that you got to see them live - I hadn't known they were still touring. Like you, I never warmed up to 'To All the Girls I've Loved Before'. It's always surprised me that it charted as high as it did.

Yes, I've been using charts that correspond to the exact day I post them, and I think it does make it a lot easier to revisit old memories when you're in the same time of year. For years, I wasn't crazy about 'Against All Odds'. I didn't dislike it, but I can't say I really liked it either. It has grown on me a lot since then, though, and it really does bring back a lot of memories of that time.

'Let's Hear It for the Boy' brings back so many memories for me as well. The Footloose soundtrack is great!

Although I remember hearing 'Breakdance' back then, I don't think it got nearly as much airplay as the other songs on this list - at least, not in my area. Good song, though.

Ahhh...just finishing middle school! The days of top 40 and going to the arcade! Again, some real great ones; the tunes by Deniece Williams, Steve Perry and Irene Cara were all #1's on my personal list, and they're still my faves today. If you can believe it, my next faves are Duran Duran and the Julio/Willie duet (better than the other 5 not mentioned!) And although not my fave Night Ranger tune, it still holds memories.

I've always thought that 1984 was a superb year for music. As I mentioned to dodger, I've never been too fond of the Julio/Willie duet, but I've always enjoyed the other songs. Great memories of a wonderful time!

Hi Dawn. I'm not a dance tune person, but I always liked Irene Cara's work. Breakdance, IMO, wasn't Flashdance, but it wasn't bad. Julio and Willie go together like pasta with whipped cream. I think this song sung by either one of them would have been good. Together--not my style. This may have been my favorite Phil Collins solo. Kinda like Time After Time, even though I never really got in to her music. I think I like Lionel better with the Commodores than without, but he's good as a soloist also, and I do like Hello. As for Deniece singing lets hear it for the boy, I think I prefer "Let's Hear It For The Girl"by Denephew. (That was a joke. --- a B-A-D joke, but a joke.

I think I read somewhere that 'Breakdance' was supposed to have been an unofficial "sequel" tune to 'Flashdance'. The two songs do sound similar, and Irene does a fine job on each. LOL at your description of Julio and Willie! I always thought that was a strange pairing myself. That's not a bad joke at all - I like it!

A lot of great artists appeared on that show back in the 80's. I agree with you about 'Time After Time' being Cyndi's best. She really does a wonderful job with it.
