Let's travel back in time to the year of E.T. and 'Pac-Man Fever'. These are the songs that occupied the top 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on May 29, 1982.
10. Get Down On It – Kool & the Gang 9. Did It in a Minute – Hall & Oates 8. Always on My Mind – Willie Nelson 7. Don’t You Want Me – Human League 6. ’65 Love Affair – Paul Davis 5. The Other Woman – Ray Parker, Jr. 4. 867-5309/Jenny – Tommy Tutone 3. I’ve Never Been to Me – Charlene 2. Don’t Talk to Strangers – Rick Springfield 1. Ebony and Ivory – Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

I know why you picked this one Dawn-number 2!! 82 wasn't a great year in music, IMO. The McCartney-Stevie duet, no thanks. The Willie tune, I'll pass. Same goes for Never Been to Me. Get Down on it, The Other Woman, Don't You Want Me all are decent. Rick Springfield & Paul Davis' songs are both above average. The winners here are Jenny and Did it in a Minute (which was left off Rock-n-Soul!!!!). Boy between this and you album post today, I guess I don't sound too positive! Sorry bout that!!

Wow, not a great time for music, eh? ;D The Hall & Oates, Human League and Tutone songs are all pretty good; the Paul Davis and Springfield songs aren't bad, but the rest--I'll pass.

Summer of '82 was a tough time for my family (my mom passed away on June 12), but the music was good!
I was finishing up my final year of elemantary school at the time. That fall I would start middle school. Changes were in the air....
I love all of these, especially '65 Love Affair and I've Never Been To Me (I'm one of the few people from YL who will defend this song! I know Dave likes it.)

I'm not really fond of '65 Love Affair or Ebony and Ivory and the Charlene song is my alltime least favorite tune...it's abysmal...but everything else is really good. Always loved the guitar on "The Other Woman". "Don't You Want Me" is a classic. To this day I imagine there are still numerous prank calls to 867-5309. I really feel for anyone who still has this phone number!

Actually, I didn't notice that until after I'd picked the year, but it's always good to bring up Rick every now and then! I like Hall & Oates' Rock n Soul, but it's missing some crucial tracks, including 'Did It in a Minute', 'Back Together Again' and 'Your Imagination'. I hope they release a good box set someday. I agree, '867-5309/Jenny' is definitely a winner - love it!

I agree - although there are some good songs here, overall this chart isn't as strong as many of the others. Of the songs on this list, I especially like 'Don't You Want Me', '867-5309/Jenny' and 'Don't Talk to Strangers' - all those bring back lots of memories!

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your mom, Pete. I know that must have been a difficult time. That's kind of how it was for me too - I was getting ready to start high school that fall. It was definitely a time of transitions. '65 Love Affair' is a really good song, with a great retro sound. I love the "Go Team Go" chant!

Ahhh...memories of finishing 7th grade. Sneaking to watch my brother's MTV and watching the USA channel with Pitfall and Bullseye. And listening to Casey every Sunday morning from 9 am to 1 pm. Great list. Never crazy over "Always on my mind", but the rest (even Charlene) are winners! With the Human League coming on, the early 80's pop and light rock was starting to give way to the 2nd big UK invasion (big thanks to MTV).

I remember she told me that when that song started getting airplay, her family got calls at all hours of the day and night asking for Jenny. They ended up having to get it changed shortly thereafter!

As much as I like some of the MTV "Big 80's" style music, I've always had an affinity for the soft rock, country crossover, soul and pop that was popular from 1980-82. It seemed like music was so much more diverse during the very early part of the decade.

Wow, Dawn. It looks like the MC group is all over the place with this one. No clear consensus with likes and dislikes.
As for me, Willie's song is in my all time top 200. Definitely my favorite on the list. I also really like '65 Love Affair, and Jenny. Ebony and Ivory is what a song about racial harmony should be, (as opposed to that silly Black and White by 3DN.) I kinda like many of the others Kool, Hall and Oates, Human League, and Springfield. Don't care for this Ray Parker song, and won't even talk about Charlene.
So I certainly didn't clear anything up.

You're right, H2. Most everyone seems to like '867-5309/Jenny', but have very different views on the other songs. Although not one of my favorites of Paul's, I've always liked 'Ebony and Ivory'. The lyrics are positive, without being overly sentimental. I remember hearing it on the radio often back then, but I very seldom hear it today.
