Here are the songs which occupied the top 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 1, 1985.
10. Fresh – Kool & the Gang 9. In My House – Mary Jane Girls 8. Things Can Only Get Better – Howard Jones 7. Heaven – Bryan Adams 6. Smooth Operator – Sade 5. Suddenly – Billy Ocean 4. Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds 3. Axel F – Harold faltermeyer 2. Everybody Wants to Rule the World – Tears for Fears 1. Everything She Wants – Wham!
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Music was still decent at this time, but the soon to come dip in quality was evident already.
The Sade and Billy Ocean songs are horrible.
The best here is the Simple Minds tune, followed by Heaven. All others get average to good ratings.
Incidentally, as much as I hated Wham, the tune here was their "best".

Hi Dawn,
I have to disagree with Sat today. I LOVE that Billy Ocean song. It's on my top 200 list. I think it caught my attention because it followed Carribean Queen and was so different.
I like Everybody wants to Rule The World, and Heaven.
Most of the others are OK -- except that I have never liked Sade at all.

Not a bad list--I was finishing up my freshman year of HS! I had just gotten my first cassette dubbing system, and loved using it for about 2 years or so--it was great for making countdowns! Tape off the radio, and host the year end countdown on to other tapes! Anyway, here's how I rank them today:
Fresh-8.3 Not their best but nice. In my house-8.6 Funky Rick James production! Always loved this. Things can only get better-9.1 Had some good ones, especially this! Heaven-7.8 Never LOVED it, but I can tolerate it. Got airplay in Syracuse a whole year before it was a hit--from the little known film "A night in heaven". Smooth operator-8.7 Didn't go crazy for it back then, but I've grown into it. Suddenly-8.5 Disliked it then, I've REALLY grown into it! Don't you...-8.8 I wasn't into those teen movies like my "girl friends". Never knew how much of a smash this was gonna be. Always preferred "Alive and kicking". Everybody wants to rule the world-8.6 Again, didn't know the smash this would be. Can tolerate it, but LOVED the following 2 hits. Everything she wants-9.7 The best one! At the time, top 40 radio played a remix that was actually LONGER than the original album version. LOVE that post-disco beat!

Not a great list, imo. Everything She Wants and maybe Suddenly are about the only ones I could tolerate listening to more than once. LOL! Well, the Simple Minds and Howard Jones tunes are ok--but were WAY overplayed back then. Still are to a certain point today. The rest of the list is just ok. Nuttin' special.

It would really become noticeable by 1987-88. 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' is a classic track from one of the best movies of the 80's. And I agree, 'Everything She Wants' is one of Wham's better songs.

Like the 1982 chart a few days ago, there seems to be a wide range of opinion on many of these songs. 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' is probably my favorite song on this list. I like pretty much everything Tears for Fears has done, especially 'Sowing the Seeds of Love'. What an awesome song!

I remember I used to tape countdown shows also! I still have a cassette with part of "The Best of 1981" on it! I agree with you about 'Things Can Only Get Better' - it's my favorite of all of Howard Jones' songs. Now that you mention it, it seems like I do recall hearing a longer version of 'Everything She Wants' back then.

There are some songs on this list I really enjoy, but overall this chart isn't as strong as most of the charts from the 70's. As Sat mentioned above, music was starting to suffer in quality around this time. Although I like the Simple Minds' song, I agree that it has been played a lot through the years.

Not a good chart for me today. I only recognize two songs four songs here and Smooth Operator I don't even like.
Fresh & Don't You are good songs, but my favorite here is Everybody Wants to Rule the World.

I liked it a little more when it was popular than I do now, but it's still enjoyable to listen to.

That was a great summer, but the last summer in which I followed pop radio...
Of these, I like HoJo, Tears For Fears, and Simple Minds (before this song came out, Simple Minds were as underground as The Cure at the time!)

I think this was around the time I started getting away from pop radio also. I still listened to it somewhat after 1985, but not nearly as much as I had before, and by 1989 I was listening to oldies and classic rock almost exclusively.

One of my very favorite summers, with so many great memories to boot! I still enjoyed listening to pretty everything that was playing, but like you, I quickly grew tired of pop radio by '89.
Faves:
Fresh
Things Can Only Get Better
Don't You (Forget About Me)
Axel F
Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Everything She Wants

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was something about much of the music in the last few years of the 80's that just didn't measure up. I had always listened to top 40 radio ever since I could remember, but it got harder and harder to stay interested in it after the mid 80's.
