We're going back 30 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on June 2, 1973.
10. Playground in My Mind – Clint Holmes 9. Hocus Pocus – Focus 8. Little Willy – Sweet 7. I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby – Barry White 6. You Are the Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder 5. Tie a Yellow Ribbon – Tony Orlando & Dawn 4. Pillow Talk – Sylvia 3. Frankenstein – Edgar Winter Group 2. Daniel – Elton John 1. My Love – Paul McCartney & Wings
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn! This is a really good list today. I like most of them -- with the exception of Hocus Pocus, which I can tolerate, and the Barry White song. It's not that I don't like Barry, I do, it's just that I can't remember which song is which. They kinda all sound alike. Tie A Yellow Ribbon is a real good song that got too much airplay, so I don't like it as much as I might have.
Four real faves on the chart: Little Willy (I like about everything the Sweet did), Daniel, My Love (still a lot of Beatles influence on that one, I think.), and You Are The Sunshine (one of my favorite Stevies.)
Also like Playground (even though it's kinda simplistic), Frankenstein (great instrumental) and Pillow Talk. Sylvia is Sylvia Robinson who was also half of "Mickey and Sylvia" (Love Is Strange)

Little Willy-great bubblegum metal! LOL!
You Are the Sunshine of My Life-beautiful song. Used to great effect in an episode of Taxi.
Actually didn't know the Edgar Winter song until the days classic rock radio.
Daniel-one of Elton's better early singles.
My Love-doesn't get the praise it deserves.

"Hocus Pocus" is great! One of my favorite riffs in rock history! These are all great! I'll pass on "Playground", though!

They do sound very similar. I agree with you about 'My Love' - that song has kind of an "Abbey Road" quality, very polished. And 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life' is truly one of Stevie's finest songs.

I just heard 'Daniel' on the car radio earlier this evening - that song is classic Elton. I've grown to love it more and more as I've gotten older - great lyrics! I completely agree with you about 'My Love'. Both that single and the Red Rose Speedway album have been torn apart by critics, but I've always thought Paul did a wonderful job with those songs.

Whenever I see some of these songs from the early 70's, I have to chuckle to myself because that was when I really started getting into music, and these lists bring back so many memories. Especially the "bubblegum" tunes--I can remember my older brother making fun of me for liking them so much. LOL! Playground in My Mind was one of those songs. My brother couldn't stand that song, so naturally I had to play the 45 full blast whenever he was home. Heehee. ;D There was a kid who lived across the street from me named Willy, so of course, all of us younger kids just HAD to sing "Little Willy" to him whenever we saw him. He hated that, so you might know that's one of my favorite childhood memories--tormenting him with that song. LOL! The rest of these songs hold lots of memories for me, too. Good stuff!

This was the popular music two weeks before my high school graduation. Except of Pillow Talk, every song's a winner here. Clint Holmes - A one hit wonder that eventually peaked at #2
Hocus Pocus - Who yodels on rock music anymore? What a great song (and a long song at that)
Little Willy - Fun song
Barry White - Did better but this one is good
Stevie Wonder - You Are the Sunshine of my Life is one of his forgotten hits
Tie a Yellow Ribbon - Gains in popularity every time our soldiers go off to fight. That's ok, I love the yellow ribbons tied everywhere.
Frankenstein - Written by Dan Hartman and the flip side of the "I Can Dream About You" 45. Great Song
Daniel - A favorite by Elton
My Love - One of my all-time favorites by Paul McCartney. He just did some many great songs, and this is one of them.

LOL about your brother! 'Playground in My Mind' does seem to be one of those songs that people either really like or really dislike. That is so funny about 'Little Willy'! I imagine that a lot of Willys and Williams had that song sung to them back in the day! LOL!

I agree, the yodelling on 'Hocus Pocus' is definitely unique! That is such a great rocker! I didn't know that about 'Frankenstein' being the flip side of the 'I Can Dream About You' 45 - that's interesting. They are very different in style!

Another fine collection of tunes:) and more memories! Playground in My Mind - I really liked it alot at the time. Hocus Pocus - the only top 40 song to include yodeling . Fantastic drumming throughout . I had (have) the song on K-tel's 22 Fantastic Hits . Have it on CD as well. Little Willy - LOVE this - I'm a Huge fan of these guys - they rock . It's also included on that K-tel album listed above . Barry White - A guilty pleasure . You are The Sunshine of My Life - Heard it a few times back then . One of Stevie's finest moments. Tie a Yellow Ribbon - Harmless light 70's pop remember hearing it on the radio and sort of remember the TV Show too. Pillow Talk - Yup know it well this was on Ktel's Sound Explosion album . Frankenstein - Oh this was a real winner with me as a kid . My middle brother had They Only Come Out a Night on LP and would crank it all the time . I have both the single edit and LP versions on CD but only the album version will do. Daniel - Awesome tune! simple as that My Love - Among Sir Paul's finest . great memories of hearing the 45 around the house.

A few months ago, I caught a couple of old episodes of the Tony Orlando and Dawn show on the Goodlife Network! Boy, do those shows bring back a lot of memories of the 70's! 'Little Willy' is a great song! The Sweet recorded some excellent rockers!
