Let's take a trip back in time to the year 1966. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on June 4 of that year.
10. Strangers in the Night – Frank Sinatra 9. Green Grass – Gary Lewis & the Playboys 8. It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World – James Brown 7. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 – Bob Dylan 6. Monday, Monday – Mamas & the Papas 5. I Am a Rock – Simon & Garfunkel 4. Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind? – Lovin’ Spo0nful 3. Paint It Black – Rolling Stones 2. A Groovy Kind of Love – Mindbenders 1. When a Man Loves a Woman – Percy Sledge
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Wow, look at numbers 7-4! You can really tell commercial folk rock was at it's peak here!
Winners-Green Grass, Monday, Monday, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?, A Groovy Kind of Love.
Not big at all on S&G, and that is one of the weakest big Stones hits of that era, IMO.
Not a bad chart.

"It's a Mans World" is the most intense heartfelt bluesiest song James Brown ever did. No one will play it anymore on the radio.
Au contraire, "Paint it Black" is one the Stones' best 60s songs, when they played around with unusual rhythms and styles, and not just what they do now.
"Strangers in the NIght" is an example of how the 60s pop lists still had crossover songs from adult pop and other genres.
"Groovy Kind of Love" and "When a Man Loves a Woman"- wonderful songs murdered later by horrible remakes! Percy Sledge's original shows that ,often, simpler is better.

Lots of good old memories. Especially that Strangers in the Night reminds me about a TV show, I think it was a show where singles went to look for a couple or something. Monda, Monday reminds me about my older sisters and their psychidelic rooms.

It was definitely a dominant music style at that time! 'Monday Monday' has always been a favorite of mine. Great melody, and the harmonies are wonderful. I used to like 'I Am a Rock', but lately I've found myself liking it less and less, probably because it's been so overplayed on the oldies stations.

You're right, m c - I don't think I've ever heard 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' on the radio, or at least not recently. I'm not a huge James Brown fan, but I do like that one. I also agree with you about the cover versions, especially Michael Bolton's remake of 'When a Man Loves a Woman'. What a horrible injustice that was to the original!

Monda, Monday reminds me about my older sisters and their psychidelic rooms. 'Strangers in the Night' does sound like it might have been used in a TV show. I really like some of his music. Psychedelic rooms - that sounds interesting! I really like those bright posters that glow under certain types of light - very 60's!

Not a bad chart
1. I Am a Rock & Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind are really good songs that nobody knows
2. Not my favorite songs by the Stones, Mamas & Papas, or Dylan, but good ones known the less
3. Don't really remember Green Grass & It's a Man's Man's Man' World
4. Kind of burnt on Sinatra, Mindbenders, & Percy Sledge.

Not a bad list. I was only 3 in '66, so obviously I don't remember these songs when they were popular. LOL! I didn't know the exact title of that Dylan song until probably 10 years or so ago. LOL! My dad liked Frank Sinatra and I can remember Strangers in the Night being played around the house quite a bit. Didn't like When a Man Loves a Woman when I was younger, but I've grown to appreciate the song and the lyrics more as I've gotten older. I also enjoyed Bette Midler's version of it. Kind of an interesting twist. Monday Monday and I Am a Rock are probably my favorites from this chart today.

'Green Grass' doesn't get nearly as much airplay as some of their other songs such as 'This Diamond Ring'. Although I'd been familiar with their other hits for years, I didn't hear 'Green Grass' until about 5 years ago.

I always wondered why he called it that - the title doesn't have much to do with the lyrics! LOL! Like you, I've grown to like 'When a Man Loves a Woman' more and more over the years. Wonderful lyrics!

Still working backwards. Some good ones here including one of my all time favorite ballads by Percy Sledge at #1 (and in the top 10 of my all time faves). Michael Bolton geddadaheer. Monday Monday is also a great song with a lot of staying power. You still hear it a lot. Love the vocal intro! James Brown - Man's World is another favorite of mine although maybe not PC today. This showed that Brown could sing a soul ballad as well as up tempo songs. Mindbenders Groovy Kind of Love is the only version you need. Phil Collins - Geddadaheer. One of my favorite Dylan songs (I don't have that many -- songs that he SINGS, that is - writing is another story) Good late Sinatra song. On Paint it Black, I see some differing opinions. I like it, and agree with mc's analysis. Decent S&G and Spoonful songs allthough not my faves in either case. (I see "Did You Ever ----" is being used on some commercial or other now. - I never remember what they are selling, so at least for getting ME to buy, it isn't working.) Gary Lewis? Yawn

Yawn H2, I'm totally with you about the Michael Bolton and Phil Collins covers. What on earth were they thinking? You're right, the intro to 'Monday, Monday' is great! I love the way their voices blend together. "Bah-dah, Bah-dah-dah-dah.." LOL! The commercial with the Spoonful song must not be working for me either - like you, I remember hearing it in conjunction with an ad, but can't place the product.
