Awwww man, wasn't music SO good back then?? And like we've said before, so many different styles!
Not familiar with Donny's song or Aretha's take on Bridge, but this is a good list.
A little tired of It Don't Come Easy, Joy to the World and Brown Sugar, but they are all still classics.
LOVE It's Too Late, Rainy Days and Mondays, and Never Can Say Goodbye is the best thing associated with Michael Jackson.
Good lineup!

Ah yes the early 70's - a great time . I first became aware of both Want Ad's and Sweet and Innocent from the fine people at Ktel ! oh and my cousin had a little crush on Donny also. It Don't Come Easy - This is my #1 fave from Ringo - just a great record - heard it lots in the house. Rainy Days & Mondays - I heard the Carpenters music quite often as a kid my next door neighbor had the 8 - track of the Greatest Hits. Brown Sugar - My cousin loved this (it is a great song) so every time he was at the house my brother would crank up the 45 (those were the days!) Joy To The World - Yup , another 45 we had in the house and I remember singing along with it . I've never gotten tired of hearing it . Me and You and a Dog named Boo - Can you imagine a song with a title like this now? LOL honestly though I love this song . Just great , and it does make me think of summer when I hear it , it takes me right back to that carefree time It's Too Late - What can you say? simply it's a classic. I know that Aretha did a cover of "Bridge " but I've never heard it BTW - Dawn I'm going to go back and answer your earlier posts and get caught up

I remember hearing "Never Can Say Goodbye" and not liking it (Jackson 5), but thinking someone else should try it and maybe it'd be better. Then later Isaac Hayes did it! Now that's what the song should be.
Did not like the Aretha Franklin version of "Bridge over Troubled Water" at all. Actually by this time I didn't like much of anything she did- she has a wonderful voice, but seemingly no taste in music. Art Garfunkel captured this song much better.
On the plus side, there's always "Joy to the World" and "Brown Sugar". The Stones were at the top of their form at this time. "Joy to the World" is just a nice happy singalong song.
It's nice to see the Billboard lists from back when!

I LOVE the summer of '71, and I wasn't even a year old yet! I wish I could have been old enough to listen to the radio at the time!! However, most of the earliest memories I have of of hearing music are of songs from 1971!
The Donny song I'm not crazy about, but all in all, a good chart all around!

Wow, what a great chart(though I admit I can do without "Sweet and Innocent"--when was the last time anyone heard that on the radio?)! I know it's been said before, but you don't hear anywhere near as much diversity on Top 40 radio these days--which is why I stick to oldies/classic rock.

Good Chart. Lotta good songs here.
1. Love the Stones, Three Dog Night, Ringo Starr, & Carole King songs.
2. The songs by Lobo, Jacksons, Carpenters, & Honey Cone were really good as well.
3. Didn't like Donny Osmond and I didn't like Aretha's version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

I wish the music of today was half as good as it was back then. Like you, I've grown tired of 'Joy to the World' and 'Brown Sugar'. Good songs, but so overplayed through the years. 'Never Can Say Goodbye' was definitely one of the Jackson 5's best songs. Love it!

I sometimes wish I were a few years older, so I could remember more of that era. 'It Don't Come Easy' is a great Ringo track! It and 'Oh My My' are my favorites of his. I agree, 'Me and You and a Dog Named Boo' is very much of its time! That's one of the very first songs I remember hearing on the radio as a kid, and like you, I always think of summer when I hear it.

I've only heard Isaac Hayes' version of 'Never Can Say Goodbye' a few times, but I thought he did a great job with it as well. I'm with you on Aretha's version of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. She's a tremendously talented singer, but this song was a poor choice for her.

I have a few vague memories of 1971, but I think it would have been great to have been old enough to really follow the pop music of the time. Like you, I'm not wild about 'Sweet and Innocent'. He recorded a few songs I like, but that song gets on my nerves for some reason.

You make a good point about the diversity in music. I really miss the days when just about all styles of music were represented on top 40 radio. Like you, I listen to oldies and classic rock almost exclusively, along with classic country. I haven't really followed top 40 since 1989 or so, except for a couple of years in the mid 90's.

Didn't like Donny Osmond and I didn't like Aretha's version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters. 'It's Too Late' is wonderful, truly a classic. Carole's music has a timeless quality. 'Rainy Days and Mondays' is one of the Carpenters' best tracks, IMO. Karen's voice has such a wistful quality, perfect for this song.

What a great time for music. As I've said in another post, Donny Osmond was a major crush of mine around that time, and "Sweet and Innocent" brings back a lot of memories for me. Also love the Lobo, Carole King, and Carpenters songs. Don't remember ever hearing Aretha's version of "Bridge", but from what most everyone has said, I'm not missing much. LOL!

I don't think I've ever heard 'Sweet and Innocent' on the radio, or at least not that I remember, but I have a reissue 45 of 'Go Away Little Girl' with 'Sweet' as the B side. Although 'Sweet' isn't a favorite, one of these days I wouldn't mind getting the Osmonds' greatest hits CD - I really like some of their music, especially 'One Bad Apple'! That song always makes me think of their cartoon show, which I loved to watch back then!
