After reading Dawn's post on Seals and Croft, It made me think of my parents. They had one of their albums. And it got me thinking...do you ever hear a song or an artist and you can't help but think of your parents? What kind of music did your parents listen to when you were growing up?
Off the top of my head- here are some of my parents fav's:
Neil Diamond- I remember going to see the Jazz Singer with my parents when it first came out. And right after the movie my dad went to K-Mart and bought the soundtrack and we listened to it all weekend.
Barbara Striesand- I didn't like her then and I don't like her now, but she was one of my mom's favorites.
Peter, Paul and Mary- one of my dad's favorite folk bands. My sister and I played a little prank on my dad. We taped over his Peter, Paul and Mary live concert cassette and replaced it with Ozzy Osbounes' Iron Man. My sister and I sat in the back seat of the station wagon and laughed our butts off when he put the tape in. He wasn't amused...
Frank Sinatra- I remember my parents dragging me to see him in concert. I was only like, 10 or 11. I really like him now.
Willie Nelson- My mom and grandmother loved his album called Stardust Memories. The one where he sings Blue Skies.
Rupret Holmes- I think that's his name? He wrote "Escape- The Pina Colada Song". My parents just thought that was such a catchy tune. I have to admit, I kind of liked it too.
I know there's more, but that's all I can think of for now.

This is a great topic, athompsen! My dad has always been more of a country music fan, and had many albums of artists such as Merle Haggard, Jimmy Dean, Charlie Rich, Buck Owens, Wanda Jackson and others. My parents went to see Buck perform in concert when my mom was expecting me, and there is home movie footage of my mom getting a kiss from Buck after the concert! I still enjoy listening to older country music myself - it brings back a lot of memories. My mom has also always liked country music, but she is more of a fan of rock and pop. Some of her favorite artists when I was growing up were Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Bob Seger. I can remember many a Saturday afternoon when an album by one of those artists would be playing on the stereo. Those were great times!

Whenever I hear "You Send Me" I think of them both because my mom told me a funny story about that song.Seems that they'd only been dating a short time and both decided to buy the other a present. They showed up on a date with a copy of the same record;it reminded them of one another. I always think of my dad whenever I hear the Bay City Rollers because he disliked then a lot!Says you couldn't understand a word they said.

My parents gave me my musical taste.
The ones that absolutely remind me of them:
Mom:
The Mamas and the Papas - she had their greatest hits album (I now have it) and it got played every time she cleaned the house. She'd be dancing around singing "Dream A Little Dream Of Me". She looks and sounds like Mama Cass.
The Beatles - played their albums a lot when I was tiny. The first song I ever memorized (at the age of 3) was "She Loves You Yeah, Yeah, Yeah". My favorite was "Penny Lane". Especially the part about the clean machine.
The Rolling Stones - same. I used to sing "Hey, You Get Off My COW". She'd laugh. She once told me in a store in not one of my finer moments that you can't always get what you want. I replied that if you try sometimes, you'll find you get what you need. I don't think she was amused.
Other mom people: Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney, Motown in general, and DooWop in general.
She also introduced me to the Monkees, and David Bowie.
Dad:
The Ventures - we had all their albums. I used to be amused at the one with the fold-out of a girl in a gold lame bikini.
Switched On Bach - one of dad's favorites.
Hooked On Classics - another.
The Animals - his favorite was "House Of The Rising Sun".
Iron Butterfly - the long version of "Inna-Gada-Da-Vida"
ZZ Top - liked them way before their MTV days.
Dire Straits - wore out the "Sultans Of Swing" 45.
Dad loves instrumental music, stuff heavy on guitars, and heavier classical like "Night On Bald Mountain". His favorite movement is "Ride Of The Valkyries" (Is it live, or is it Memorex?)

[glow=red,2,300]Most of my musical tastes I picked up from my mom. She got me hooked on Simon and Garfunkel, The Doors, Chicago, The Moody Blues, Niel Diamond, and just about everything else I listen to. That way we always agree on what radio station to turn it to in the car. Chicago and the Moody Blues especially remind me of her, as well as any Christmas songs sung by Barbara Streisand because that is her favorite Christmas album.
Anything country reminds me of my dad.[/glow]

Does your dad like current country or just the classic stuff?

Here are a few that come to mind:
Rod Stewart - Just about anything of his will bring back memories of them both.
Queen - Especially "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions." Maybe that's why they're my favorite today!
Songs from the late 70s, such as "Lay Down Sally", "It's a Heartache", "Take a Chance On Me", "Reminiscing" really remind me of my parents. I went out and bought Billboards Top 10 of 1978, and all of those songs are included.
Disco reminds me of them, too... big time. They were in their early 20s when I was growing up, and I remember them going out dancing a lot. I heard Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, ABBA and many others when friends would come over.
The Mamas and the Papas, The Doors, The Eagles - I could go on and on.

My mom was born in 1924, so she was more into the '30s and '40s stuff. Glenn Miller was her favorite. I like that kind of stuff, too!

This is a great topic, athompsen! (BTW, what do we call you for short? at? athomp?? ;D It's scary when I look at some of the replies, because I think I'm the same age as some of your parents, or even older. So, some of your parents' favorites are my favorites, and in some cases your parents favorites are things I actually consider "newer music" - Oh well. Both of my parents were from Eastern Europe and liked a lot of Yiddish music, but they did have many American favorites. The song I think about when I think of my Dad was one that was in DJ Dave's Greatest Novelty Song contest. "The Thing" by Phil Harris. My Dad would sing it all the time, and put in his own sound effects which would keep me in stitches. For some reason, he also liked Bobby Vinton's "Roses Are Red", which he used to sing off-key (my Dad, not Bobby). My Mom, who is 97 and living in a nursing home loved to listen to Perry Como - anything he sang was a favorite of hers. Also Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, and Bing Crosby.

Mother was a country fan and always listened to the local C&W station. While growing up I remember listening to her music like Charlie Pride, Lynn Anderson, & Ray Price.
My dad liked bluegrass, country swing, jazz, & big band sound. I now have several bluegrass, swing, & jazz CDs.

My parents were bonafide hippies in the late 60's and 70's who loved rock and roll. Somewhere around 1979 my Mom started listening to country music exclusively....uuuuuuuughhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Dad's favorites included: The Eagles The Ventures Cat Stevens Harry Chapin 38 Special Lynard Skynard
My Mom had a broader musical taste, until she discovered her inexplicable fondness for steel guitars (no offense to country fans...it's a running gag on how much I despise the genre). Anyhow, her favorites included: John Lennon The Commodores The Beatles Petula Clark Peter Paul and Mary Carole King Johnny Horton
