Let's take another look at the music that was popular 29 years ago. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 8, 1974. I really love this particular chart! 10. For the Love of Money – O’Jays 9. Midnight at the Oasis – Maria Muldaur 8. The Entertainer – Marvin Hamlisch 7. Help Me – Joni Mitchell 6. Billy, Don’t Be a Hero – Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods 5. Sundown – Gordon Lightfoot 4. Dancing Machine – Jackson 5 3. You Make Me Feel Brand New – Stylistics 2. The Streak – Ray Stevens 1. Band on the Run – Paul McCartney & Wings YAY!!! Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Love it! These songs hit it big on the charts just 4 months before I was born. Pretty neat seeing this list! Midnight at the Oasis - This just made me flash back to all those late nights of channel surfing, seeing the Time Life music infomercials.. this is one of the songs I always heard! Really like her voice, good song. Billy, Don't Be A Hero - Another one I like a lot. Dancing Machine - I L O V E this song, probably my favorite from the Jackson 5. Doncha just wanna get up and dance when you hear it? I know I do. I love the beat, the rhythm, the harmonies.. they sound great. You Make Me Feel Brand New - Gotta sing along to it! Band on the Run - I think this song rocks.. big fan of Paul McCartney and Wings! All of their songs remind me of my childhood.

Excellent chart today! the only song I never cared for was Midnight at The Oasis (sorry to all the Maria Muldaur fans All the others bring back great memories - thanks Dawn:) Band on The Run - This has always been a huge fave of mine I remember my cousins and I singing along to this all the time (heck I still do - sound pretty good too ;D . My middle brother had all the singles released from the album plus the 8 - track. The Streak - Remember being at my cousins house and him playing this for me for the first time back in '74 we were all sitting around the stereo in fits of laughter! Help Me - This is one of my faves from Joni - remember hearing it quite a bit on the radio , I didn't know who sang it at first though . Billy Don't Be a Hero - Whenever I went to my cousin's house she always let me browse through her 45's , she had Elton , Grand Funk , The Defranco Family etc and this one! Yeah it's kind of cheesy now I guess but I actually kind of like it! A buddy of mine everytime he came over would insist I play it - he REALLY liked it ! Sundown - Heard it on the radio lots , great tune My dad never cared for Gordon though he always said that his songs were way to long LOL! And I use to always reply "well dad he's a folk singer" You Make Me Feel Brand New - I first heard this on K - tel's Superstars album . Always takes me back to those days of '74 .love that Coral electric sitar One of my best buddies who lived across the street from me back then - his sister had the Stylistics album. The Entertainer - I probably first heard this on a Ktel album for the first time ( I really loved Ktel - Can You Tell ? LOL Dancing Machine -I don't recall hearing this until a couple of years later - always enjoyed it though:)

Great list! Lotsa memories for me with most of these songs. I have a cassette tape of me and about 3 friends of mine singing along to "Billy Don't Be a Hero" from back then. Early Karaoke! LOL!
Always liked "Midnight at the Oasis". Maria Muldaur had an interesting voice.
I can remember the Jackson 5 on some variety show singing "Dancing Machine". They all had their funky clothes and huge afros. And Michael had those patented dance moves down! I love that song!
Love the O'Jays and the Stylistics tunes, too.
Band on the Run is a great McCartney song. I like it a lot.

Pretty good chart
The Entertainer - I loved the movie "The Sting" and all the music from it. Got the soundtrack on vinyl & cassette.
Sundown - Great song from Gordon Lightfoot, one of Canada's best.
You Malke me Feel Brand New - Always liked the Stylistics, and this is one of their really good ones.
The Streak - Another silly (but fun) song from Ray Stevens.
Band on the Run - A great song from a great album.
The rest, not really crazy about them.

Just about every song was a winner! 'Midnight at the Oasis' is wonderful. She has a great voice - very soulful and jazzy. That song brings back so many memories of my childhood. 'Dancing Machine' always gets the ol' feet moving. Great song!

LOL Dancing Machine -I don't recall hearing this until a couple of years later - always enjoyed it though:) You're very welcome, Ken - these songs bring back lots of childhood memories for me also! I just heard 'Band on the Run' yesterday on the Flashback radio show, and had to crank it up! I absolutely love that song! It is a great one to sing along to! I agree, 'Billy Don't Be a Hero' is a little cheesy, but it's good cheese! I love that early 70's pop sound! 'The Entertainer' always reminds me of being in a shoe store when I was little. I've always liked it - can even play it on the piano! Those Ktel albums were great! Whenever I listen to one, it always takes me back to the time the songs were popular. There are some songs on them that I've never heard anywhere else, like Brother to Brother's 'In the Bottle'.

I love that old footage from those variety shows! The stage sets and costumes are always wild - very 70's! 'Dancing Machine' is a really fun song. 'You Make Me Feel Brand New' is such a beautiful song, one of their best.

My mom really liked it back then, and I can still remember her buying the 45 of it for herself and 'Band on the Run' for me one day. I just can't say enough good things about 'Band on the Run'. That song and album were among the finest moments of Paul's solo career, IMO.

OK. '74 was a good year. I really like a lot of these.
LOVE the Stylistics, and "Brand New" may have been their best. Great contrast between Airion Love's base and Russell Tompkin Jr.'s high tenor.
Sundown is one of many great Lightfoot tunes. He's one guy I can listen to all day. I was living in Canada in '74, so I heard Sundown a lot, and never tired of it.
Billy Don't Be A Hero. - IMO, a very sappy tune, and I didn't care for it at all (although musically, Bo's version was superior to Paper Lace's which was released at about the same time.). Ironically, I really like Bo's followup "Who Do You Think You Are" which was nearly as sappy, yet not nearly as popular.
Help Me - I would have liked it more except for Joni's habit of putting far too many words in a measure of music.
The Streak - rivals Ahab the Arab for being Stevens' best IMO.
Band on the Run - Fine sound. Wings always seemed to do things just a little more unusually than most bands back then, which made their music less predictable, and more enjoyable.

I've never heard Paper Lace's version of 'Billy, Don't Be a Hero', but I've always been curious about it. I really like 'Who Do You Think You Are' - great horns! I'm surprised it wasn't more popular back then.

Sick of For the Love of Money.
Entertainer is a nice little non-rock song.
Sundown & Band on the Run-classics.
Never liked the Stylistics.
The Streak-EH.
Dancing Machine-good song we sing to Skylar! LOL!
Billy is a decent song.
Wow, I never realized Midnight at the Oasis and Help Me were on the charts at the SAME exact time! The songs, more than most, remind me of being a kid! My mom loved them! GREAT songs!!

GREAT songs!! That's sweet about your singing that to Skylar! Both 'Help Me' and 'Midnight at the Oasis' are among my favorite 70's songs, and like you, they remind me so much of my childhood. I remember I didn't hear 'Midnight' at all from the mid 70's up until 1991, when I bought the 45 at a record fair. As soon as I started listening to it, the memories came flooding back.

That's what my mom has always said about the songs that came out in '74! Soulful and jazzy - that's what I really like about her voice, which adds to the song and why I like it so much. Dancing Machine is such a big favorite of mine, one of those songs that makes me feel good! My mom has said that also! She especially loves the songs that came out in the fall and early winter of that year, such as 'Angie Baby' and 'You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet'. That was definitely a wonderful year for music - in fact, 3 of my top 4 favorite songs were on the charts in 1974!
