These were the songs that occupied the top 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on June 9, 1984.
10. Jump (for my Love) – Pointer Sisters 9. Self Control – Laura Branigan 8. Breakdance – Irene Cara 7. Hello – Lionel Richie 6. The Heart of Rock and Roll – Huey Lewis & the News 5. Sister Christian – Night Ranger 4. The Reflex – Duran Duran 3. Oh Sherrie – Steve Perry 2. Let’s Hear It for the Boy – Deniece Williams 1. Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn.
I have a lot of catching up to do, so I'll work backwards and eventually catch up.
I guess June 1984 was not a favorite music time for me. As I scan the top 10, I don't see many that I am really wild about. One exception is "Hello". I've always liked Lionel Richie's ballads, and this is a good one.
Time After Time is probably my second favorite on the chart, and I kinda like Oh Sherrie.
I usually like Irene Cara, but Breakdance just seemed to be an attempt to cash in on Flashdance and Fame. Heart of R&R, IMO, is typical Huey. It's OK, but this group never gor me that excited.
The rest I can take or leave.
BTW, I like this new location for the board.

1984 was probably the one year from the 80s that I was actually listening to the radio. Some pretty good songs here.
Jump, Oh Sherrie, Heart of R&R, and Sister Christian are probably my favorites. Funny how half way through the year and already two top 10 hits called Jump.
Self-Control, The Reflex, & Time after Time, although not my favorites by those artists, were still good songs.
Let's Hear for the Boy is probably my least favorite song from Footloose.
Breakdance & Hello I didn't like at all.

As soon as I finished reading the list I went back through my cassettes and found one that I made (recorded off the radio) from well, the date says July 6 - 15 of '84.
It includes Time After Time , Self Control, and Jump(For My Love) so at least in my area these were still getting airplay at that point.
I bought the 45's of Heart of Rock and Roll(great!) , Sister Christian(I just listened to this, this morning) and Steve Perry's Oh Sherrie (always thought the girl he was singing too in the video was VERY cute.
Let 's Hear it For The Boy - I thought it was an ok tune (I have the Footloose soundtrack on cassette (it seemed to be everywhere that summer!)
LOVE Time After Time

Thanks about the new location. 'Hello' is one of Lionel Richie's best ballads. I think I like it even more now than I did back then. 'Breakdance' does sound very similar to those other songs. I remember reading that it was supposed to be an unofficial follow-up to 'Flashdance'.

I think 1984 was the last year that music was consistently good. There were great songs released in the mid 80's and beyond, but overall, the quality of the music declined considerably after this year.

I have one from around that time as well - it has 'Borderline', 'The Reflex', 'What's Love Got to Do With It', 'Self Control', 'Dynamite' and 'Eyes Without a Face' on it. I saw the 'Oh Sherrie' video not long ago on VH-1 Classic!

Sweet list!
Jump For My Love - Fun song! Reminds me of "Children of a Lesser God", and that scene between William Hurt and Marlee Matlin.. very touching. We used to run laps to this song every day in gym. *lol*
Self Control - For as long as I can remember, my favorite Laura Branigan song was Gloria, but then I gave this one a chance, and I loved it!
The Heart of Rock and Roll - Mmmm, Huey Lewis. Good memories here.
Sister Christian - Ohhh my gosh, I cannot even begin to tell how much I adore this song. My grandmother used to let me listen to my favorite radio station if we were running errands, and if this song was on, the radio was turned up!
The Reflex - Not my favorite Duran Duran song, but I liked it!
Oh Sherrie - Look up at Sister Christian .. loved it, loved it, loved it.
Let's Hear It For The Boy - My best friends and I used to pop in the Footloose soundtrack while jumping on a friend's trampoline. I really liked it at the time, but not quite as much now.
Time After Time - Great song.
P.S.
I heard the girl Steve's singing to in the Oh Sherrie video, was actually his girlfriend at the time.

Probably the last GREAT year of music of my youth.
The music my buddy and I knew so well, listening to top 40 radio and watching videos.
None of these songs are HORRIBLE, but Hello and Jump (For My Love) are probably my least faves, only would like em because I associate fun times with them.
Faves are Oh Sherrie and Sister Christian, for sure!

I pretty much like all of them, with the exception of Breakdance.
I was really beginning to get heavy into music at this time. I was finishing up 5th grade. I got "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" as a end of elementary school gift, and listened to "The Reflex" to my hearts content. Gotta give props to Duran Duran - my favorite group of all time.
I love Huey Lewis, but "Heart Of Rock and Roll" is probably my least favorite, but "Sports" was a fabulous album. "Heart and Soul" is my favorite.

I pretty much like every song on here. I really liked Laura Branigan back then. Thought she had a strong, powerful voice. And Cyndi Lauper is one of my all time favorite singers. Glad to see Time After Time at #1.

Laura Branigan is kind of forgotten these days, but she had an excellent voice. 'Sister Christian' is probably my all-time favorite power ballad. Everything comes together so well on this song. I think that's true about Steve Perry's girlfriend - I remember seeing that on Pop-Up Video one time.

'Heart and Soul' has always been my favorite from the Sports album, and while I like 'The Heart of Rock and Roll', there are other songs of his I like more.

Glad to see Time After Time at #1. As I mentioned to Kat, Laura seems to be overlooked these days, which is a shame, because she is a very talented singer with an incredible voice. I have her Best of on cassette, and there are many great songs on it. Cyndi does a wonderful job with 'Time After Time' - one of her best!
