Today we're going back 20 years in time for a look at the songs that were popular back then. Here are the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 11, 1983.
10. Affair of the Heart – Rick Springfield 9. Don’t Let It End – Styx 8. Always Something There to Remind Me – Naked Eyes 7. She Blinded Me With Science – Thomas Dolby 6. Beat It – Michael Jackson 5. My Love- Lionel Richie 4. Overkill – Men at Work 3. Time (Clock of the Heart) – Culture Club 2. Let’s Dance – David Bowie 1. Flashdance…What a Feeling – Irene Cara
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn. I know I always say that I don't like dance tunes, but I really do like Flashdance. I like the way it starts up slowly and then revs up. It's an exciting song. Not much else excites me on the chart, however. For such a huge hit, I find Beat It kind of weak. (I prefer Weird Al's Eat It ) I also thought that the songs by Styx, M@W, Culture Club, Richie, and Bowie are not among their best. I really wasn't very fond of how Naked Eyes covered Always Something There To Remind Me. --- and I won't even mention what I think of the Dolby song. I'll just go in my corner and sulk. ;D

Lemme guess which song is YOUR fave Dawn! The beginning of the end for Styx. You KNOW Tommy and JY just wanted to rock! Nothing outstanding here, although it does contain my favorite Men at Work and Culture Club songs. Only song I truly hate is Let's Dance. Decent chart otherwise.

Good Afternoon Dawn:) Don't remember the Springfield tune - I'd have to hear it Styx - I really liked this ballad alot and have it on a mix tape I made around this time. Naked Eyes - This has always been a fave! heard it lots back in '83 and I've been hearing it alot again recently . Not long ago I added it to a compilation CD. Thomas Dolby - Thought it was alright Michael Jackson - Well you certainly couldn't go anywhere without hearing any of the Thriller tunes at this time . I'm really burned out on the album. Overkill - Always loved these guys - a buddy had the first two LP's back in the day - enjoyable stuff. Culture Club - Not a Huge fan by any means - this was alright I guess , My favorite songs were Church of the Poison Mind - I liked the Motown 60 's feel to it and Don't you Want Me. David Bowie - Love it Flashdance - We played this in the stage band and it cooked! I have a cassette that we made in '85 with this included - it was quite good.

To this day I don't think I know the Lionel Richie song. I remember hearing "You Are", and I remember seeing the title "My Love", but I've never heard the song. Probably never would have caught my attention...
Otherwise, a great chart!

It sounds like this definitely wasn't a good chart for ya today. I promise to do better tomorrow, though! 'Eat It' - now there's a song I haven't heard in ages! Weird Al's parodies are so great! I don't mind the Naked Eyes song, but I have to say I like 'Promises, Promises' much better. LOL about the Dolby song! ;D

Let's just say I was smiling when I was typing out number 10! ;D 'Don't Let It End' is my least favorite Styx song. I've just never really warmed up to it. I remember that David Bowie's Serious Moonlight tour was simulcast on HBO and our top 40 station back in the summer of '83 - I believe that was one of the first times that was done. I always wondered why they picked that particular concert!

Here's a link to a clip of the Springfield song: www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=146279 . I love the Thriller album, but I know what you mean about those songs being everywhere back in that spring and summer. Men at Work were great! I love all of their singles! 'Flashdance' sounds like an awesome song to play in band! It was always cool to play the popular hits of the day!

Not much else excites me on the chart, however. For such a huge hit, I find Beat It kind of weak. (I prefer Weird Al's Eat It ) That is why you are my bud! ;D This is pretty much some good stuff (boy, bad grammar tonight!) 10) Not a big fan, but this one was ok - had it on K-Tel's Chartaction '83 - a 10th bday present from my aunt 9) Again, not a big fan, and unfortunately, this was on the radio when my friend's dog got ran over by a car - boy talk about irony! 8) Love it! I agree w/Dawn, however, that Promises Promises is the better song 7) Ok, but way overplayed. I liked Hyperactive better 6) BLECH! I stopped liking Jacko at this point. Eat it is way superior, and much more entertaining! 5) I seriously can't remember this one, and my mom was a fan. I'll have to dig out the Motown set 4) A good song, but It's A Mistake is my favorite 3) One of my favorite groups! (my mom's too!). Kind of creeps me out, though, once I found out he wrote it about their drummer 2) Another of mom's favorites (she got me into him)! Probably my favorite song by him 1) Don't like this one. Don't know why - probably overexposure.

Affair of the Heart - I have his Working Class Dog album (have always liked the cover), and I love him!! I also watched him every afternoon on General Hospital. After catching his story on Behind the Music, I have a better respect for him. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. Not a bad song.
Always Something There to Remind Me, She Blinded Me With Science, Beat It, Let's Dance - Favorites!! David Bowie can do no wrong, ever.
Seeing Culture Club on the list, I remember being in grade school again and how much my parents just could NOT understand why I, or anyone else my age, could possibly like this guy. *lol*

I do remember it - wow what a jolt to the memory LOL I haven't heard it since '83. A buddy of mine recorded alot of songs off radio at that time - he'd let the tape run all night then check in the morning to see what he had and this is where I first heard it.

I think this chart was probably the reason I wasn't listening to the radio in the early 80s. Not much here I liked then or now. Don't let it End was the beginning of the end for Styx.
Got so tired of Beat It (and Thriller) I got rid of the cassette I had of it.
Let's Dance was ok by not very good by earlier Bowie songs.
Always Something there to Remind Me was ok.
The rest I could take or leave.
Sorry, just didn't like the music being put out in 1983.

Well, let's see...The Culture Club and Irene Cara songs are my faves on here today. The Springfield song is all right, but he had better. Tired of hearing Beat It, and the Naked Eyes song was never my favorite. Everything is on here is just ok.

That is a little creepy about 'Time' - I hadn't known that! I do like the song, though - it's my favorite of theirs.
