Let's put on the boogie shoes and travel back 24 years in time to the disco era. These were the top 10 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 16, 1979.
10. Boogie Wonderland – Earth, Wind & Fire with the Emotions 9. Reunited – Peaches & Herb 8. She Believes in Me – Kenny Rogers 7. Chuck E.’s in Love – Rickie Lee Jones 6. The Logical Song – Supertramp 5. Love You Inside Out – Bee Gees 4. Just When I Needed You Most – Randy Vanwarmer 3. Ring My Bell – Anita Ward 2. We Are Family – Sister Sledge 1. Hot Stuff – Donna Summer
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

ooohh -- W-A-Y too much disco on this chart for my taste, Dawn. OK, let's see what we can pull together: I love the Bee Gees, and forgive them for their disco transgresssions. Actually, Love You Inside Out is a fine song, and I listen to it often. I also like good ballads. There are three ballads on the chart. Reunited, She Believes in Me and Just When I Needed You Most. The first two aren't bad. The Vanwarmer song I kinda put in the cheesy category -- but it sticks in your head after you hear it. We Are Family is catchy. It also reminds me of the 1979 World Series when the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates had adopted the song as their theme song. I always liked The Logical Song even though I don't hear it much these days. --and that leaves Boogie Wonderland, Ring My Bell, Chuck Es in Love and Hot Stuff. Yuk.

But hey, a disco act! And while Reunited is a ballad, they were a disco act at the time too! I HATE Ring My Bell. One of the weaker disco efforts, IMO. So WEIRD seeing She Believes in Me mixed in there!! BTW-Martina's favorite album is Rickie Lee Jones' debut effort!

The old disco ball was still spinning strong on this day back in '79. Remember hearing We are family at a friends house for the first time. Reunited - nice song - a buddy's sister had the 45 - she must have really liked it because every time I was there she was playing it - LOL She Believes in Me - Kenny was still riding high - and to be able to have a crossover hit with disco still going strong was quite an achievment. Chuck E's in Love - I never cared for this at all - It's still hard for me to sit through even to this day. The Logical Song - My classic rock station plays it's share of Supertramp - but I've always really like it - Brings back very nice memories of this time - just finishing Grade 7 Love You Inside Out - I remember hearing it, but I heard Tragedy( I bought the 45 at the time yes I admit it - "shakes head" - I really liked it back then) and Too Much Heaven alot more. Just When I Needed You Most - H2 is right it is kind of cheesy I guess but at the same time once you hear it , you're humming it the rest of the day . It's another one of my "guilty pleasures" I have it on cassette. Ring My Bell - Not one of disco's best but it's ok. Hot Stuff - Donna was at her peak (easy to tell since she is at #1 Yeah I like it but I thought Last Dance was better.

Hang in there - tomorrow's chart is a lot different! I agree with you about 'Love You Inside Out'. A superb song, and one of the best tracks from their excellent Spirits Having Flown album. 'We Are Family' is definitely catchy! I often find myself singing along to it when I hear it!

BTW-Martina's favorite album is Rickie Lee Jones' debut effort! 'Love You Inside Out' is one of their more unusual songs style-wise - although I've seen it classified as disco, it really doesn't fit that genre. Here's a link to a clip of it: www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=81814. It got a lot of play back in the day, but I seldom hear it anymore on the radio. I didn't know that about Martina's favorite album - cool! I've heard it's a really good album, but the only songs I know from it are 'Chuck E's in Love' and 'Young Blood'.

'Just When I Needed You Most' does have a way of staying in your head! Nice song - I've always liked it.

Pretty good year. Wrappin up 1st grade. Finished out the school year with (what else?) a skating party.
10) It's ok, but kind of repetetive. 9) YUK! I don't much care for duets. Usually either sappy, or sad. 8) It's one of Kenny's better ones. I don't mind it. 7) Again, yuk. 6) One of my favorites! Love Supertramp. "I know it sounds absurd, but please tell me who I am" - great writing! 5) I love the BeeGees and this one is good, but Tragedy is the song..... 4) For some reason I like this one. Goes against my musical taste, but I can't explain it. 3) Gotta agree w/SAT on this one - kind of weak. She doesn't have the voice of Gloria Gaynor or Donna Summer or Thelma Houston. 2) Not bad. Being from PA, the Pirates and Steelers kind of ran this one into the ground, but it's still a classic. 1) Love Donna Summer, but there are better songs, although this one is better than Bad Girls. I remember seeing this one in the jukebox at a local restaurant, and on the little paper card that tells you what song it is, it had a picture of Reactor 2 (or was it 1?) at Three Mile Island on it. All I can say is I hope it wasn't a local company who made those cards, because those of us in the "kill zone" didn't think it was very funny....... 2)

An enjoyable lot of songs today. Boogie Wonderland--My favorite EW&F song. The Emotions added a little oomph to it. I like it a lot. Reunited--Kinda sappy, but I was into sappy back then. LOL! She Believes in Me--Good song. I've seen Kenny in concert a couple of times. He puts on a good show. Chuck E--I remember when I first heard this song, I was intrigued by Rickie's voice. Very different. This is my favorite song by her. The Logical Song--Used to listen to Supertramp, and especially the album this is from, all the time. Mucho memories of this song. Love You Inside Out--More great memories! Spirits Having Flown was playing on my turntable all the time back then (when Supertramp wasn't on it, that is. LOL). I was really into the Bee Gees then, and I love this song. Just When...--Oh man, I had a jones for this song way back when. LOL! Couldn't get enough of it. Ring My Bell--This is the only song on the list today that I really have an aversion to. Never liked it at all. We Are Family--A friend of mine used to have parties at her house quite frequently. She had 3 sisters, and at the end of the night, they would all get in a little group and sing this song. Of course, by that time, they were all pretty "out of it", so sometimes their rendition didn't sound so good. LOL! But those were fun times, and I associate that song with that memory. Hot Stuff--Same friend, same parties. LOL! Donna Summer, and especially this song, was played all the time. I love Donna Summer, mainly for that reason.

Hi Dawn
Disco, disco, disco. Only one real classic rock song in the chart, but it's a good one.
Would have to say The Logical Song is my favorite on this list. Matter of fact, the whole album is good.
And speaking of great albums, Rickie Lee Jones' effort is superb as well. Chuck E's in Love is one of several great songs off that album.
Reunited & Boogie Wonderland are great songs by some great artists. Now that I don't hear them every third song, I don't mind them.
Ring My Bell, We Are Family, & Hot Stuff are songs I just really got tired of, and still can't listen to them today.
Although I like Kenny Rogers, She Believes in Me just isn't one of my favorites.
Just When I Needed you Most & Love You Inside Out are songs I just didn't like.
Not a bad chart, considering the era.

Once in a while, I'll hear a lyric that really strikes a chord with me, and that is one of them. As you say, the writing is great! I like 'Ring My Bell', but I agree that her voice isn't the best. I remember reading somewhere that this song was originally written for Stacy Lattisaw - she probably would have done a better job with it. I remember Three Mile Island, and you're right, that was definitely no laughing matter. It was insensitive to have pictured it on that card.

I can remember a Valentine's party I went to in 6th grade (1980). We kept playing 'Dim All the Lights' and trying to hold those long notes without running out of breath! LOL!

'The Logical Song' (and the entire Breakfast in America album), still holds up very well today. Love it! I'm definitely going to check out Rickie's album sometime. The two tracks I know from it are both great! It's true that 'Reunited' was played pretty often back in the day. Still a great song, though.

Hot Stuff – Donna Summer Any thoughts or memories of these songs? Ahhh, the summer I finished Grade 10 (sort of, I had to take English at summer school). 10. A great funky disco dancing song - I can still listen to this one ! 9. Not a bad ballad, but it got waaay too much airplay at the time. 8. Not really a big Kenny fan, this one is okay though. 7. Very quirky song - one I can listen to now every once in a while. 6. Excellent tune!! I looove Supertramp and this was the first of their albums in my collection 5. Don't really remember this one but I am a huge Bee Gees fan - I really love their early work (before Saturday Night Fever). 4. A cheesy type of ballad that sticks in your brain - doesn't make me want to scream, though. 3. Really have to be in the mood (on the dance floor slightly hammered) to want to hear this one. 2. Like this one - definitely takes me back to memories of the 79 World Series. 1. Not my fave of Donna Summers - I thought she had a better voice than most of her work reflected.

Supertramp is a great band! Breakfast in America is such a solid album. In recent years, I've really grown to love the Bee Gees' early material more and more. The disco-era hits will always be favorites of mine, but the harmonies on the early hits are wonderful.
