Today we're taking a trip back in time to the "Summer of Love". These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on June 17, 1967.
10. Mirage – Tommy James & the Shondells 9. I Got Rhythm – Happenings 8. All I Need – Temptations 7. Windy – Association 6. Little Bit O’ Soul – Music Explosion 5. Somebody to Love – Jefferson Airplane 4. Release Me – Engelbert Humperdinck 3. She’d Rather Be With Me – Turtles 2. Respect – Aretha Franklin 1. Groovin’ - Rascals
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn! This is without a doubt one of my favorite years! A lot was happening in my life back then, so songs have special memories as well as generally liking or disliking them. I notice that there are a lot of songs here that would be considered 2nd tier by the particular artists (follow-up hits, not their most popular, etc.) These include Mirage, All I Need, Windy, and She'd Rather Be With Me. Four totally different types of songs, but I love em all. None of them get played very much these days, either. -- Especially She'd Rather Be with Me -- which I never hear unless I play my own copy. Didn't really care for the Happenings interpretation of most of their songs -- but I Got Rhythm is an exception. I love their arrangement Little Bit of Soul and Somebody to Love both remind me of someone I was dating back then. One funny thing, though. In June of 1967 you could look at the two songs side-by-side as first hits of two new groups. Who could tell that one group would be a one-hit wonder, and the other would become, essentially, superstars. I actually like that cheesy Englebert song (like it better than the Esther Phillips version actually) - but hardly like anything else he did. Respect - great song -- greatly overplayed. Groovin' -- The very definintion of a classic song. Fantastic! Darn! -- I'm all done. I enjoyed being back in '67 for a while.

Jefferson Airplane and Engelbert Humperdinck back to back on the charts! LOL!! SO sick of Respect, but She'd Rather Be With Me is one of the better Turtles tunes. Groovin' and Windy are both good and Little Bit O' Soul is a great one! I Got Rhythm is decent. The real winner here is Mirage, an all too often overlooked TJ song!

Hi Dawn
Loved summer charts when I was young. The hits of summer always seemed better than those any other time year (imo).
Would have to agree with H2IZCOOL about the follow up songs (Mirage, All I Need, Windy, & She'd Rather be With Me). All good songs, but don't quite measure up to their previous hits. I would include I Got Rhythm in this category as well, since I like See You in September better.
Release Me is one of the very few (if only) song by Englebert Humperdinck I actually like.
Little Bit o' Soul, Somebody to Love, Respect, & Groovin' are classic summer hits.

What strikes me is that how little of the "psychedelic" Summer of Love thing is present on the chart. I wonder if it was later in the summer, or if you have to go lower down the chart to see the songs. Or if the songs were never singles, only album cuts (since Sgt. Pepper never produced a single!).

Good Morning Dawn ! Ah yes ' 67 . So many fantastic tunes released during those 12 months .I have # 10 , 7,6,5,3,2, and #1 on 45. There are only two song I'm not familiar with (The Happenings and The Temptations) - I'll check them out later.
Mirage - Just listened to this a couple of nights ago (along with The Doors) . It has always been a big fave of mine . It's too bad that it doesn't get as much airplay as his other hits.
Windy - Their harmonies were always so brilliant. Heard it lots when I was little.
Little Bit O' Soul - A classic!
Somebody To Love - I never get tired of hearing it
Release Me - I mentioned in one of Sat's opinion posts how I still can't believe this kept Penny Lane out of #1 position in the U.K. ?
She's Rather Be With Me - What a song!! - Great production on this. Wonderful drumming and Howard and Mark could really sing! Among my favorites 60's artists.
Respect - always enjoyed this one!
Groovin - A perfect summer tune! and another 60's band I've always enjoyed listening to.

That's a good point about the 2nd tier songs, and you're right, they don't seem to get much airplay these days. It's been ages since I've heard 'All I Need', and that's my favorite Tempts song. It is interesting to think about the Airplane and the Music Explosion as being contemporaries, and yet having such vastly different career outcomes. I've always liked 'Little Bit O'Soul', and wondered why there weren't any successful follow-ups. They had a great sound!

Here's a link to a clip: www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=149886. Englebert Humperdinck and the Airplane do make for a strange pairing! LOL! You are so right about Mirage. A really good song, but not heard nearly as often as 'Mony Mony' or 'I Think We're Alone Now'.

That does seem like the best time of year for music! 'Somebody to Love' is one of the first songs I can recall hearing - I was probably 3 years old at the time.

Good point, m c. I looked at the top 10 charts from the rest of that summer, and while there are a few psychedelic-themed hits - 'San Francisco' and 'All You Need is Love', for example - the majority of songs were more mainstream.

I've always shook my head at that Humperdinck song topping 'Penny Lane' as well. I agree, 'She'd Rather Be With Me' has some excellent drumming in it. I like the song's march-like sound toward the end.

My mom and dad got married in 1967, then my dad promptly went to VietNam. He was in the Air Force. I think all of these are favorites of my mom.
10) I had to dig out the Tommy James anthology cd for this one. It sounds vaguely familiar, but it also sounds like one of their other songs. 9) Not a fan of this one. It's to Muzak-y for me. 8) I'm pretty sure I know this one. Wasn't it also done by Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell? Doesn't it go: "You're all...I need...to get by...ohhh"? - If yes, it's a good one. 7) A good bubblegummy fun song. 6) Has a good funky beat. Good to dance to. 5) Excellent - love Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship. Finally got a nice 1 cd collection that spans all 3 incarnations. 4) No thanks. My mom loves him and saw him in concert, but it's not my cup of tea. 3) I agree w/H2 - a good underplayed song. 2) Good, but tired of it. She does have a voice, though. 1) Again, a good bubblegummy fun song.

I'd like to get that Airplane/Starship CD one of these days. I have their Ten Years and Change Starship greatest hits on cassette, and the older hits on 45 and LP, but it would be nice to have them all together in one place. Love their stuff!

It's a "Behind The Music" CD. I don't remember what exactly they have it titled though (Jefferson Airplane, Starship, etc.). I got it through BMG. I never saw "Behind The Music" cd's before of since. It does have the VH1 logo on it.
