Do you all see why I say the late 80s was such a piss poor time for music? There isn't a song here that doesn't give me nightmares! LOL!!!

Look at that top 5! The Jets? Debbie Gibson? Rick Astley? RICK ASTLEY???

Even Cheap Trick, with their only number one, that song doesn't live up to their earlier stuff.

Do you also see why I turned to classic rock at the time? ;D

Seriously, am I like the youngest member here? I don't mean that personally, but I've never seen such disdain for my favorite musical time in my life!

I was just finishing up 9th grade, and there are some way cool songs on here!

8) Like Bruce Hornsby - my friend Karen went to see him and fell asleep in the front row - I'm sure it made him feel good.
7) One of only 2 I don't like on here. Never a fan of hers after the Go-Go's split.
6) Love Hall and Oates - good song, good album!
5) LOVE the Jets. Love to sing this one.
4) Don't want anything to do with Jacko.
3) Liked Debbie Gibson (but not Tiffany).

1) LOVE IT!!! - me and my best friend (still to this day) from middle school on (and the closest thing I have to a sister - I'm an only child) used to listen to this CD all the time. She was the only person I knew who had a CD player, and when her college roommate stole this CD from her, I bought her a new one. Never Gonna Give You Up was the best, though.

I liked Hal Sparks on I Love The 80's on VH1 - he said it best (to the tune of Never Gonna Give You Up) "I'm a little whiiiite guy, with a big 'ol blaaaack voice....."

With the exception of Jacko and Bruce, I own every single one of those songs, and have complete CD's by several of those artists. I guess I'm the go-to 80's person around here......since no one else likes it.......sniff sniff.......

There are a couple of songs on this list I don't mind listening to - I do like Debbie Gibson's 'Foolish Beat' a lot. Like you, I didn't know too many people with CD players back then - they were still catching on at this time. Hard to believe it's been 15 years!

I am definitely in the minority on this one - I actually liked a lot of the music in the 80's! That's not to say that I don't think some of it is crap or that I hate classic rock - I have very eclectic taste in music.

1983 to 1986 I was in college and spent a lot of time at campus pubs and various clubs in the city, so I was exposed to a lot of "dance music" and other stuff that got lots of airplay. The rest of the 80's I was still hanging out with a lot of my college buddies and occasionally still went out to clubs.

That being said, here are my reactions to these songs:

10. Not really a big Prince fan, and don't really remember this one.

9. The Flame - not their best effort, but a solid 80's ballad nonetheless.

8. Bruce Hornsby - I can listen to this track even now, but a lot of his other work just irritates me.

7. I liked the Go Go's and most of Belinda's solo work. That being said, I think I liked I Get Weak more.

6. Hall and Oates really irritated the crap out of me in the 80's - most of their songs really make me cringe. This one I fortunately don't really remember.

5. The Jets - just another "family" group with choreographed dance moves. I don't remember this song, though.

4. Michael Jackson didn't do much for me either - half of the lyrics you can't even understand, and all that "hee hee" crap is like chalk screeching on a blackboard - makes me cringe in pain.

3. Debbie (now Deborah) Gibson had some okay tunes - this one I can still listen to once in a while.

2. I actually saw Wham in concert, and was irritated when the group was changed to "George Michael and Wham". This one is okay, doesn't make me want to change the channel.

1. Okay, guilty pleasure time here. I actually LIKED Rick Astley. Like many other people, I was surprised at this big voice coming out of this little white guy. Apparently he is one of the few 80's artists who invested their money wisely, so he is not bankrupt now.
My girlfriends and I always got up on the dance floor when Rick Astley was played.

Seriously, don't hate me for liking this music. I love a lot of classic rock, h#ll I love a lot of classical music. The great thing about this forum is that we can share
our opinions with each other, whether or not we agree on any particular style of music. Thanks for your tolerance

I know what you mean, heyabbott. I like a wide variety of music as well, and some of it might not be popular with everyone. But I'm glad that you feel comfortable sharing your opinions of music here - that's exactly what this forum is about, and I think it's great to have a variety of viewpoints!

In general, the mid-to-late 80's was not a good time musically for me, but there are some songs from that period that I really enjoy.

When I was invited to join this board, I had absolutely no hesitation because I remembered how many of the members used to respect each other's opinions on the music boards back at YL. You and Sat for example never made me feel like my opinions were wierd or not welcome.

Thanks for making this such a great place to come! I enjoy hearing about other peoples' tastes, and perhaps I will pick up ideas here that will expand my musical experiences. I have started enjoying jazz a lot more since I have seen my cousin's jazz trio perform, and a friend of mine has an older sister who also is in a jazz trio.

Hmm, there are a few that I liked at the time.. and still do to this day. But yeah, this chart is definately a reminder of why I quit listening to pop radio. LOL!

* One More Try

* Together Forever (I thought he was kinda cute, too!)

The rest of 'em. Especially Make It Real and Foolish Beat - Make it stop!! My best friend thought Debbie Gibson was so cool, and the song couldn't be played enough if we were at her house. I don't know how she made it through either of those songs without her ears bleeding endlessly. *lol*

You're very welcome, heyabbott. I know that we really enjoy having you here, and your viewpoints are most welcome! We all have different likes and dislikes, and like you, I'm glad that we have a place where we know our opinions will be respected.

I'm a fan of jazz also, both traditional and the more contemporary "smooth jazz" styles.

There are one or two Jets songs I don't mind listening to, but I've never warmed up to 'Make It Real'. 'Foolish Beat' is a song that I've really grown to enjoy more and more over the years.
