Today, let's take a look at the songs that were popular 35 years ago at this time. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 22, 1968.
10. Reach Out of the Darkness – Friend & Lover 9. Tighten Up – Archie Bell & the Drells 8. Angel of the Morning – Merilee Rush 7. Think – Aretha Franklin 6. Mony Mony – Tommy James & the Shondells 5. The Look of Love – Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 4. Yummy Yummy Yummy – Ohio Express 3. Mrs. Robinson – Simon & Garfunkel 2. MacArthur Park – Richard Harris 1. This Guy’s in Love With You – Herb Alpert
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hi Dawn. Another pretty good summer chart. Reach in the Darkness, Angel of the Morning, & the Look of Love are all good melodies.
Tighten Up was Archie Bell's greatest
Mony Mony - One of Tommy James' best hit, a real fun song. Billy Idol should have left it alone.
Yummy, Yummy, Yummy - One of the better bubble gum pop songs.
Mrs. Robinson - Another hit for Simon & Garfunkel. Great Movie, Great song. I think this was the Grammy winner for 1968. Probably my favorite on this chart.
MacArthur Park - A pretty good song, maybe a bit too long, but better the Donna Summer's later cover
This Guy's in Love With You - My favorite song by Herb Alpert. Kind of different sound for Herb as sings more than he plays his trumpet. Good song though.

You better think. Think about what you're trying to do to me. Yeah, think. Let your mind go, let yourself be free. Let's go back, let's go back, let's go way on way back when. I didn't even know you, you couldn't have been too much more than ten. I ain't no psychiatrist. I ain't no doctor with a degree. But it don't take much time to see what you're doing to me.

Lotsa memories from this list...
Reach Out...I absolutely love this song. "I think it's so groovy now". ;D
Tighten Up--My husband used to sing this song all the time for some reason. It was kinda cute to hear him singing it out of the blue. LOL!
Angel of the Morning--Nice, mellow tune. Also liked Juice Newton's version.
Think--Good song. One of my faves by Aretha.
Mony Mony--Really good one. Ever hear the story of how the title "Mony Mony" came to be?
The Look of Love--It's ok. Never one of my favorites.
Yummy Yummy Yummy--Nice, bubble gum tune. I saw on some show on VH-1 that the lyrics were intended to be a little risque. Of course, who thinks about that when you're a kid just enjoying the music? LOL!
Mrs. Robinson--Always liked Paul and Art. Classic song by them.
MacArthur Park--Ick. If I never hear this song again, it'll be too soon.
This Guy's in Love...--Not bad. A little sappy, but ok for what it is.

I do enjoy most of his songs, but I've never been fond of that one. Tommy James does a nice job with it, though. I remember I was kinda lukewarm to 'This Guy's in Love With You' when I first heard it, but it's really grown on me since then. As you mentioned, it is a different sound for him.

One of Aretha's best! Her vocals are especially energetic on this song.

We have it on a compilation album somewhere, and he'd always end up playing that track over and over again. What a guy! ;D Try this link for the story behind "Mony Mony": www.bobshannon.com/stories/Mony2.html

Hey Dawn! Good list here! Reach Out of the Darkness is not a great song, but it was popular around the time that the group I hung around with then learned that a guy who was "outside" the group was a pretty good guy - and who became our friend. So the song has a memory. Tighten Up - This is one of those songs that I probably would have found tolerable if they didn't play it so much then. I got tired of it quickly, and still don''t like it much. Angel of the Morning - Not a bad song. I found the Merilee Rush and Juice Newton versions to be almost identical. About a year ago, someone told me that Shaggy had recorded it also and just called it Angel. I listened to it once. PUH-LEEZE! Think - Not Aretha's best\ Mony Mony - May be my favorite Tommy James. It's just a happy song! I'm familiar with the Mutual of New York thing (although the link provided more details than I knew - not to mention a website I was not familiar with) As for Billy Idol - he should have stuck with Mutual of Cleveland or something. I was never a fan of Sergio Mendes, but this is a very good song. One of the better versions of it. Yummy Yummy. - This is the song that most people think about when they say "bubblegum music". It's so light and inane that it epitomizes what bubblegum was supposed to be. (Most of the other bubblegum songs, IMO, were more intricate, or held hidden messages or something.) This is just a good, fun song. Mrs. Robinson - May not be the most musical of S&Gs string of hits, but it is IMO, the most clever. As such, it is a fantastic song! The line "where have you gone Joe DiMaggio" has become a recognizable expression for the longing for simpler times gone by. MacArthur Park - I remember seeing a poll once where this was voted the worst song of all time. Although it's not my favorite song, I really didn't mind it at all. It's FAR better, for instance, than Donna Summers version of the same song. This Guy's In Love With You - Not a bad novelty song. Alpert is not a vocalist. Thus, this was a curiosity that made it big. Overplayed in '68. Don't hear it much now.

Best song on here-Reach Out of the Darkness.
Sick of the songs by Aretha, TJ and Simon and Garfunkel.
Angel of the Morning is good, and actually, so is Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!

Love every tune on the list!
Yummy Yummy Yummy - I first heard this when I was very little , later on I had it on K-tel's Flashback Fever.
Mrs.Robinson - Among Paul and Art's best! I've seen the movie a few times too.
This Guy's in Love With You - A good little tune
MacArthur Park - I never hear this really all that much on the radio.
Mony Mony - Yeah!
Angel In The Morning - I believe I have this on a Ktel collection as well. I've always heard Juice Newton's version more on the radio than Merilee's.
Think - I first heard this when she sang it in The Blues Brothers movie.
Reach Out Of The Darkness - Great track!
Tighten Up - Love this one:)
The Look of Love - Kind of a cool one - another one that I don't hear a whole lot on the oldies station but when they do play it - I enjoy it!

You're right about the two versions of 'Angel of the Morning' - they do have a very similar sound. I didn't know that Shaggy had recorded it, but I imagine it doesn't hold up to either Merilee's or Juice's version. ;D LOL about Billy Idol and Mutual of Cleveland! As I mentioned to dodger, his remake of that song was definitely a mistake! I agree - I've always thought of 'Yummy Yummy Yummy' as the classic bubblegum song.

I agree, 'Reach Out of the Darkness' is definitely one of the standouts on this list! 'Yummy Yummy Yummy' is such a fun song to sing along with. It always reminds me of an episode of The Wonder Years - that's where I first heard it, I think.

Like you, Ken, I don't hear 'MacArthur Park' or 'The Look of Love' very much on the oldies stations - about the only place I hear them nowadays is on a "nostalgia" station that plays lighter music from the 40's through the 70's. I've also heard Juice's version of 'Angel' more than Merilee's - in fact, I didn't realize it was a cover version until about 7 or 8 years after it was released.
