We're going back 31 years today. These were the top 10 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart from June 24, 1972.
10. Too Late to Turn Back Now – Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose 9. Oh Girl – Chi-Lites 8. (Last Night) I Didn’t Get to Sleep At All – 5th Dimension 7. Lean On Me – Bill Withers 6. Troglodyte (Cave Man) – Jimmy Castor Bunch 5. I’ll Take You There – Staple Singers 4. Nice to Be With You – Gallery 3. Outa-Space – Billy Preston 2. Song Sung Blue – Neil Diamond 1. The Candy Man – Sammy Davis, Jr.
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Wow, I guess "soul" was the word back then! Seven out of ten artists were soul/R&B.
To me, the winners here are numbers 10 & 8.
Not the greatest list for that time period.

Hey Dawn! Quite a bit of R&B/Soul on the chart today.
Too Late to Turn Back Now - This was probably the best of the group's songs (two major and two minor hits). Well orchestrated and well performed. Similar in style and theme to the Spinners Could It Be I'm Falling in Love.
Oh Girl - My fave on the chart today. Beautiful, wistful song. (Covered nicely by Paul Young years later). The Chi Lites were a popular soul group for years, but never went big "mainstream" until this song (and then Have You Seen Her). In this, they were similar to many other groups of the late 60s/early 70s who were well known in the black community, but crossed-over only briefly with one or two hits. Other groups in this category: The Moments, The Five Stairsteps, The Three Degrees.
I Didn't Get To Sleep At All - One of my two faves by the 5th dimension (the other being One Less Bell To Answer). The song is one that played well to adult/MOR audiences as well as those who loved the "5th" among the children of Aquarius
Lean On Me - A classic! Withers sang the song the way it should be sung. The later Club Nuveau cover was a travesty. We be jammin? Give me a break!!
Troglodyte - A fun song.
I'll Take You There - The 6th R&B in a row! Staples were not my favorite group, but I kinda like this one.
So Nice To Be With You - -- and the string is broken. Pleasant light pop rock song.
Outa Space - Another good Billy Preston Song. After we talked about him on yesterdsay's post (I had mentioned that I was surprised he didn't have more hits ) I looked him up in Whitburn. The interesting thing is that most of the hits he did have were top 5 or better.
Song Sung Blue - Not bad, but the beginning of the descent from good early Diamond to not-so-good later Diamond
The Candy Man - One of those "standards" that every now and then creams the opposition on the pop charts no matter what kind of musical genre is "in" at the time.

I remember them all. My faves are all at the bottom of the list- 8,9, and 10. Especially "Oh Girl"- what a beautiful song.

More great childhood memories Well except for I'll Take You There which I didn't hear until about 7 years ago. Nice To Be With You - Nice Simple tune - remember singing along with it . Play it on the guitar if I can remember all the words! ;D Troglodyte - Still brings a smile to my face every time I play it - fun song. Outta Space - Love this! Song Sung Blue - One of Neil's that I still really like . Remember hearing this lots. Oh Girl - An Amazing track. Lean On Me - Classic! Candy Man - This has totally been forgotten now by radio, But at the time of course it was huge! Loved the movie as a kid and even read the book in elementary school:)

I just heard 'Last Night (I Didn't Get to Sleep At All)' a little while ago on the oldies station - what a great song that is! It doesn't get played as often as some of their other hits, but it's always been a favorite of mine.

Hey H2! You make a good point about the groups such as the Chi-Lites crossing over for one or two hits. That's also true of the Main Ingredient, Blue Magic, and a few others I can't place at the moment. I really love most of the early 70's soul songs. Oh, I absolutely agree about 'Lean on Me' - Club Nouveau's version is horrible! That is interesting about Billy Preston - as you mentioned, he didn't have many chart hits, but the ones he did have were very successful. 'Space Race' from 1973 has always been my favorite of his. I vaguely remember that song being used as a segue into commercial breaks on American Bandstand many years ago.

Unfortunately, though, the oldies stations where I live have played it so many times that it started to lose its appeal for me. Still, it's a classic.

Oh, I remember hearing 'Song Sung Blue' often back then also! That's one of the first songs I can remember hearing on the radio. I was still pretty young - not quite 4 years old at the time. 'The Candy Man' brings back so many memories for me! I very seldom hear it on the radio anymore either, and that's a shame. Love it!

Hi Dawn
Didn't realize June 1972 was so full of soul/R&B. Good chart though
Too Late to Turn Back Now is definately Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's best song. I remember them performing at Disneyland a year later at Grad Night.
Oh Girl - Love the song & the group.
Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All - Another good one from a group that belongs in the Rockhall.
Lean On Me - Good song, but maybe overplayed.
Troglodite - A fun song, maybe not "PC" enough for today's audience.
I'll Take You There - I really like the Staples. This song & Respect Yourself are my favorites.
Nice to Be With You - An ok song. Was included on Dick Clark's 20 Years of Rock & Roll Album, not sure why. It wasn't that good.
Outa-Space - Another great one from Billy.
Song Sung Blue - Never warmed to this one by Neil. Had much better hits.
The Candy Man - Another fun song from a fun movie. Sammy is just great here.

I don't remember hearing 'Troglodyte' at all when I was growing up. The first time I heard it was in 1987, when I heard the clip of it included in the 'Convention '72' 45. I agree, it is a fun song! 'Nice to Be With You' is a good song, but being more pop-oriented, it does seem like an unusual choice for a rock n' roll retrospective album.

There are some good groovin' songs on here:
10) Great beat - a good song. 9) Another good song - I'm partial to Paul Young, but this is the original. 8) One I love to sing - in my vocal range. 7) Love Bill Withers! Aint No Sunshine is my favorite, but this is great - yes, Club Noveau stank - we played in in band, and when we got to the "We Be Jammin" part, our director cut off. 6) Not familiar with this one..... 5) Another good one - never really picked up on the religious undertone until I recently saw this one on a gospel collection. 4) Kind of poppy, but not too bad. 3) Not familiar with this one either..... 2) Ok, but not a big Neil Diamond fan - don't totally hate it, but not wild about it. 1) I liked the movie, but the song's a bit sappy.

'Ain't No Sunshine' is my favorite Bill Withers song also - I like its moody, melancholy feel. That "we be jammin'" part in Club Nouveau's version of 'Lean on Me' added insult to injury. What a horrible remake! Here are links to clips of 'Troglodyte' www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=382276 and 'Outa-Space' www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=451251. Neither of these songs gets much airplay these days.
