Let's go back 21 years in time for a look at the popular songs of the day. These were the top 10 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on June 26, 1982.
10. The Other Woman – Ray Parker, Jr. 9. Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me – Juice Newton 8. Let It Whip – Dazz Band 7. Crimson and Clover – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts 6. Hurts So Good – John Cougar 5. Always on My Mind – Willie Nelson 4. Heat of the Moment – Asia 3. Rosanna – Toto 2. Don’t You Want Me – Human League 1. Ebony and Ivory – Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Gosh, songs 1 to 5 gave me goosebumps. 1982 was my first year in university and it was a rough one for me. I was in the process of adapting to a new environment with diferent people from around the island, the world of the grown ups. I learned a lot about life outside of school and the house. I felt in love for the first time and soon enough found out that love wasn't only hearts and I love you letters. I miss those years though. I think they went to fast.

Hey Dawn! Another '80s survey.... oh well. ;D Actually, it's not a bad chart. My fave on the chart today is You Were Always On My Mind. Even though I'm not a big Willie fan, I think this song was perfect for his voice, and it was a memorable performance. As trite (though important) as the message may be, I've always liked Ebony and Ivory. Clever lyrics, pretty melody and sung by two superstars. Don't You Want Me - Another good song (although not in the same class as the above two). I've said before, I lump this one with Reach Out of the Darkness. Crimson and Clover - Very good cover. I like TJ's version better, but this is rougher, heavier and deeper sound is a very good interpretation. Rosanna - Written for Rosanna Arquette, who was dating one of the band members at the time. Good Tune. Hurt So Good - Down a Notch from Jack and Diane, but still a good song. Also above average: The Other Woman, Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me, Heat of the Moment Not fond of Let It Whip

Wow, how ironic Juice should be on the list today! And you know, it's the only song I DON'T know on today's list! LOL!
I put Dazz Band and Ray Parker's songs at the "average" level. Probably the duet with Paul and Stevie too. Better than Say, Say, Say anyway!
Willie's song is less than average.
Joan did a better than average cover of Crimson and Clover (NOT better than the original though!).
Don't You Want Me and Hurt So Good are both good, but I am burnt on them.
The winners here are Rosanna and Heat of the Moment. The timeless rock station here plays Africa (instead of just Hold the Line), but yet I haven't heard Rosanna. Which is weird, since that song rocks more. It also blows me away that Heat of the Moment did better on the charts then Only Time Will Tell. But I still like em both lots!

Hmm...some good songs here, some not so good. The Other Woman--I'm sure I know this, but I just can't think of the tune right now. Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me--Just talked about Juice Newton over on Sat's Opinion post. I like Juice, and I like this song. Let it Whip--Kinda funky, but kinda repetitive. I don't mind hearing it once every 10 years or so. Crimson and Clover--Now we're talkin'! Love this cover version by Joan and the Blackhearts! Hurts So Good--Good stuff from Mellencamp! Always On My Mind--Willie Nelson's voice is very grating. Never cared for his version of this song. Heat of the Moment--Love it! Really liked the video, too. Rosanna--My husband and I used to hang around with another couple around the time this song came out. For some reason, the guy just loved "Rosanna", and whenever we were over at their house, he'd put the Toto album on, and he made sure to keep playing Rosanna over and over again. Gawd, it was annoying! So I don't care if I never hear the song again or not. LOL! Don't You Want Me--Not a bad song. A bit overplayed, though. Ebony and Ivory--Another song I don't mind hearing every few years, but nothing I want to listen to on a regular basis.

It sounds like that was a challenging time for you, Cathy, but it sounds like you gained a lot of insight during those years. That can be a difficult stage of life - I know it was for me. Still, like you, I miss those years in a way. Time does go by so quickly - it seems like only yesterday!

10. Don't really know this one
9. I haven't heard this in a long long time. Nobody had mentioned it on Sat's opinion post, I remembered her other songs first, but I like this one.
8. Don't really know this one either
7. Pretty good cover, but like the original better
6. Like this one, not my fave though
5. Not really a Willie fan
4. Like this one, and Only Time Will tell
3. Toto is a fave band, like this tune as well
2. College flashback here - can't decide if I liked this one or Fascination more.
1. Okay tune, better than Say Say Say, that's for sure

Not a good year. I had that mean teacher, and I was in a school bus accident. 10) I like this one about as much as Ghostbusters. 9) Liked the video, but not wild about the song. 8) Thanks to commercials, whenever I hear this one, all I can see is "Tampax was here". 7) Like the song, but not by this artist. 6) Not too bad. Getting better..... 5) This was on the radio as I left the accident scene. Don't like it for the images it conjures up. 4) Good song. I like Asia. 3) I'm not fond of the band, but I like the song. 2) Great song! One of my all time favorites. 1) Eh. Could take or leave it. They did a good send up of it on SNL with Eddie Murphy as Stevie and Joe Piscopo as Frank Sinatra, recording his new album "Frank Sings Songs The Young People Will Enjoy". "You are black and I am white, life's an Eskimo Pie, let's take a bite.......you are dark and I am light, you are blind as a bat and I have sight......you are black, I am white, and who cares". A funny send up of Frank's tendancy to take good songs and put his own "unique" spin on them.

Sorry about that - but there will be some good early 60's charts coming up before long! ;D I think Willie does a nice job with 'Always on My Mind' as well - as you say, it's a good fit for his vocal style. I heard the Pet Shop Boys' version a few years after this one, and didn't like it nearly as much as Willie's. There was a time when I had grown a little tired of 'Ebony and Ivory', but now that it's not overplayed anymore, I've begun to really enjoy it again. A good collaborative effort from two musicians I admire and respect.

I thought that was pretty cool about Juice myself! 'Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me' is great, one of her more uptempo, rock-influenced hits. That is a little odd that the Timeless Rock station would play 'Africa' instead of 'Rosanna'. And like you, I think 'Only Time Will Tell' is the better of the two Asia songs, and should have charted a lot higher than #17! But 'Heat of the Moment' is good, too. I love that debut album!

I used to hear it quite a bit on the radio, but nowadays, it doesn't seem to get much airplay at all. I like Joan's version of 'Crimson and Clover' also - it has a nice edge to it. The original is great, too! LOL about 'Rosanna'! That does sound pretty annoying!

Okay tune, better than Say Say Say, that's for sure I've always liked Toto's music also! I think IV was their most popular album. There were several good hit singles from it, including 'Rosanna' and 'Make Believe' - a song I haven't heard on the radio in ages! 'Don't You Want Me' and 'Fascination' are both excellent! I like 'Don't You Want Me' just a bit more.

Hi Dawn Only two songs I'm not familiar with Ray Parker and The Gap Band - I know a couple of tunes by the band just not this one - at least I don't think so. Crimson and Clover - Joan did a fine job. It's been a while since I've heard her version . Hurts So Good - Awesome 80's rock! Always On My Mind - I don't mind Willie 's voice . Does a nice job. Heat of The Moment - Still sounds great today - "Sigh" high school memories , nice drumming from Carl . Roseanna - I loved this when it came out! Remember listening to it at a buddy's house during that summer. Don't You Want Me - As much as I was against all those synth bands back then. I actually didn't mind a couple of their songs. Ebony and Ivory - I bought the 45 when it came out and still have it , Plus we also did this in the concert band. It didn't sound to bad either.

'Don't You Want Me' is terrific! The Human League recorded some really great songs. LOL about that Frank Sinatra "album" title! I wonder if he ever watched that particular episode?

There's a link to a clip of Ray Parker Jr.'s song in my response to Kathy, and here's one to 'Let It Whip': www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=418713. I don't remember 'Let It Whip' very well from when it was current, for some reason. That entire first Asia album is fantastic! I remember buying it when I was in 9th grade after hearing 'Sole Survivor' on an AOR station. Great memories!
