Ok, NOW you are talkin'! Don't know the Poppy Family tune (although I know it was Terry Jacks and his wife). LOVE, love, love The Wonder of You! Mama Liked the Roses I always associate with Christmas since it was included on his one Christmas album. Lay Down is good, better than Brand New Key. Love Rare Earth, and Get Ready I am still not sick of! Ride Captain Ride is a one hit wonder I do not get sick of either. Hitchin' a Ride is decent. The Long and Winding Road-the end of an era. Ball of Confusion I just heard the other day on the Timeless Rock station, which is so cool that they play the black artists. Mama Told Me (Not to Come) is a classic but I am getting a little burnt on it. The Love You Save is not bad. Great chart!

Hi Dawn! One super song on the chart today and several other good ones (and a coupla dogs, IMO)
10. Which Way You Goin', Billy? - Poppy Family: Not a bad song at all. Like the melody more than the lyrics. Susan Jacks (Terry's wife) sang lead. In fact, on occasion I've heard the group referred to as Susan Jacks and the Poppy Family.
9. The Wonder of You/Mama Liked the Roses - Elvis Presley: Here's the biggest dog (Sorry, Adam). Elvis' talent, IMO, was inversely proportional to his weight. The fatter he got, the worse he sang. The Wonder of You is a great song. It's in my Top 250 all time. - However, it's sung by Ray Peterson. Elvis butchers it! He slurs over the words, misses the notes, and all in all sounds like he doesn't care. Mama Liked the Roses is a little better - but only because I don't know another version to compare it to.
8. Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) - Melanie: Probably her best.
7. Get Ready - Rare Earth: An exotic species- a white Motown group. Good song. Rare Earth's version was more popular than, and nearly as good as, the Temptations' version.
6. Ride Captain Ride - Blues Image: Not a bad song. Rumored to be about the USS Pueblo incident in 1968. I don't believe that is true, however.
5. Hitchin' a Ride - Vanity Fare: Decent song, but very overplayed in it's day...and I still hear it too much.
4. The Long and Winding Road/For You Blue - Beatles: The "A" side is my fave on today's chart. In my Top 250. The only sad thing about it is that when it hit the charts, we knew it was the end of an era. The "B" side is a nice little song. 3. Ball of Confusion - Temptations: I like the Temps' ballads more than their up-tempo stuff, and this falls into the latter category. It also is an attempt of theirs to join the ranks of protesters and social commentators. 2. Mama Told Me (Not to Come) - Three Dog Night: One of my least favorite songs by one of my favorite groups.
1. The Love You Save - Jackson 5: part of the pack of 4 songs that made #1 at the start of the Jacksons' career. This one is my favorite of the 4.

Sorry, Buddy. Nothing personal. It's just that I grew up with Skinny Elvis. Not an ounce of offense taken! I love all eras of Elvis and of course, skinny/Sun/pre Army Elvis is the most classic!

There are some great songs on this list - oh yeah! 10. Nice little simple tune , I thought Susan had a great voice - looked good too .They were local faves so It still get's regular airplay on the local oldies station here. 9.I've head this a few times but not enough to really comment. 8.Not a huge fan of Melanie's but it's better then Brand New Key. 7.Awesome version! Rare Earth were such a great band . I have a few of their 45's as well as an Anthology CD. 6.Well alright! among the best of the one hit wonders! Fantastic guitar on the fade out of the song. 5.A song I never get tired of . Love that cowbell , great piano too . Heard this regularly when I was a kid. 4.Yup H2 is right The Fabs were fighting amongst themselves in court at this point. Regardless of whatever they were dealing with in their personnel lives they still gave us great music right to the very end . I've always been very fond of For You Blue . Great tune from George. 3. The Tempts were still crankin' out the hits . This is a good one! 2.Remember hearing this when I was very young . The daughter that lived next - door to us had the 45. 1.To me this was Michael at his best . Loved The J5!

Here's a link to a clip of 'Which Way You Goin' Billy': www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=454861. Good song, although I don't remember hearing it on the radio at all when I was younger. 'The Wonder of You' is a great one from the King! I've said this many times, but I think his voice is so much more soulful on his later material. 'The Long and Winding Road' is wonderful, but it always makes me sad when I hear it. It sounds so final.

That's interesting about 'Ride Captain Ride' possibly being about the USS Pueblo incident - I hadn't known that. Great song! I think 'The Long and Winding Road' is my favorite on this chart also. I've never minded the "Spectorizing" on it too much, although I think the original version without the choir and the strings is the better of the two. I like 'Mama Told Me (Not to Come)', but I agree it isn't their best.

I have one of their greatest hits compilations on cassette, but I wouldn't mind getting that Anthology one of these days. The piano work on 'Hitchin' a Ride' is superb! I love that early 70's pop sound.

Hi Dawn, Really good chart today. Must be when Elvis is my least favorite song on the chart.
Which Way You Going Billy? - Nice little tune by the Poppy Family. Only hit #2 on the charts (eventually), but where I grew up (So Cal) I think it hit #1.
The Wonder of You - Least favorite on the chart and not really one of my favorite Elvis song.
Lay Down - Melanie was cute & Melanie could have sang a song with mud in her mouth & I would have liked it. This is probably her best song (with the Edwin Hawkins Singers backing her up).
Get Ready - Better than the Temps version (imo). The live version is awesome
Ride Captain Ride - I heard the story of this being about the Pueblo incident & I'm inclined to believe it. One of my all-time favorite one hit wonder songs.
Hitchin' A Ride - The better of the two songs Vanity Fair charted.
The Long & Winding Road - Thanks for the ride guys, it was fun. One of my all-time favorite Beatle song.
Ball of Confusion - Good song by the Temps, but I also like their ballads much better.
Mama Told Me - Three Dog Night was such a good group. When I'm putting together my own compilations, I play this song after Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. The two songs just seem to go together.
The Love You Save - Good song before Michael went weird.

I've often wondered why there weren't any follow-up singles to 'Ride Captain Ride'. Blues Image had a great sound! Michael is definitely strange nowadays, but there's no denying that he had talent, especially at the time 'The Love You Save' was popular. A winning tune from the J5!

A little before my time, but I still know most of them.
10) Not familiar with this one. 9) I'm sure I've heard it but I can't recall it right this second. 8) I almost think I like Brand New Key better...... 7) A good song, but I like it by the Temptations better. 6) I like this one. It's not really my type of music, but it's kind of easy going (I can't really explain it). 5) Like this one. My mom made a few appearances on Bandstand when it was in Philly, and taught me how to dance early on. The hitchhike was a good fun easy dance. 4) Love this one. One of Harrison's finest. 3) Not the Temptations usual fare, but a powerful song. 2) My parents were big 3 Dog Night fans, and I enjoy this one. 1) Probably one of my least favorite Jacson 5 songs, but still not bad.

Love this chart today. So many childhood memories for me. Which Way You Goin' Billy--Love this one. Had the 45 and played it constantly. I just listened to the snippet on the link you provided, and I got a little misty eyed listening to it. LOL! The Wonder of You/Mama Liked the Roses--Good stuff from Elvis. Seems to me a female artist did "Mama Liked the Roses" not too long ago, but I can't think of who it was. Now it will bug me. LOL! Lay Down--Always liked Melanie. My brother and I were always competing back then about which one of us could figure out "trivia" about songs and artists first. I remember I found out that Melanie's last name was "Safka" before he did. So naturally, I had to throw that in his face whenever possible. Heehee. Get Ready--Rare Earth=Kick Ass! Love them! Ride Captain Ride--The classic rock station here plays this song a lot, and I never get tired of hearing it. Hitchin' A Ride--I had this 45 when I was a kid. Actually found the album that this song is on at a thrift store a few months ago. The Long and Winding Road--Makes me kinda sad whenever I hear it. Ball of Confusion--Really like this one. Mama Told Me Not to Come--Three Dog Night's a great group. I like this song a lot. Didn't Randy Newman write this one? The Love You Save--Lotsa memories of the J5. This is a nice, upbeat song from them. Now I'm off to find out who sang "Mama Liked the Roses".

Although I was just a young'un this year, I do remember almost all of these! 10. I liked the Poppy Family, as well as Terry Jacks' solo work. This one was kinda sad, but still a nice tune. 9. Not my fave Elvis tune - it is okay though. 8. Vaguely remember this one, but at least it's better than Brand New Key 7. Get Ready - I looove this tune! 6. Loooove this tune!! Too bad it was a one hit wonder 5. Not too familiar with this one. 4. I like The Long and Winding Road, but it is a little sad. 3. Ball of Confusion - I like this version, but I also like the remake by Love and Rockets. 2. One of my faves by Three Dog Night 1. I liked the Jackson Five back then, still can listen to some of their tunes. Too bad Michael's great talent has been overshadowed by his wierdness. The last few years I really don't like his music.
