We're taking a trip back in time to the 70's today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 1, 1978.
10. The Groove Line – Heatwave 9. Dance With Me – Peter Brown 8. Love is Like Oxygen – Sweet 7. Still the Same – Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band 6. You Belong to Me – Carly Simon 5. Use Ta Be My Girl – O’Jays 4. Take a Chance on Me – Abba 3. It’s a Heartache – Bonnie Tyler 2. Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty 1. Shadow Dancing – Andy Gibb
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Don't know 10 & 9, and I didn't know 8 until I saw the video for it (and then got the greatest hits, of course).
Good variety of styles here. Absolutely love Baker Street, no matter how many plays it gets. His Greatest Hits is actually great.
Other winners here-Take a Chance on Me and Shadow Dancing.

Fond memories here. I like NINE of these songs which is rare for me. 10. The Groove Line – Heatwave Very similar in style to "Boogie Nights", their Platinum 45 from the previous year. Good dance floor song. 9. Dance With Me – Peter Brown Play that funky music white boy. I've always loved this track and it's message. 8. Love is Like Oxygen – Sweet Ok, this is the one I don't like. Never a fan of The Sweet. I thought the lyrics were a little lame 7. Still the Same – Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band My favorite Seger single. I always put this on the jukebox when I go to the pool hall 6. You Belong to Me – Carly Simon Decent Carly but certainly not her best. Nice sax solo midway. 5. Use Ta Be My Girl – O’Jays Their last big hit, went straight to the top 4. Take a Chance on Me – Abba Another in a string of good singles from the Swedish group. This was a popular singalong song. 3. It’s a Heartache – Bonnie Tyler Rod Stewart in drag? Nah...this husky voiced beauty brought a country feel to the Top 10 with this track. 2. Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty Lingered at this position for six weeks, never able to unseat Andy Gibb for the top. This song was very, very overplayed. Lyrically it is a great song. Also a great sax solo here. 1. Shadow Dancing – Andy Gibb Not really a song good enough to be a number one...Andy Gibb was at the peak of his popularity in the summer of 78. He could have released a remake of Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport and still hit the top five. Don't get me wrong...I like this one. Even my mother liked it.

Not too bad. My favorite here is "Used ta Be My Girl". Wonderful.
And I like "Groove Line", "It's a Heartache", and "Baker Street" (my second-favorite)
I don't like the lyrics part of "Love is LIke Oxygen", but I always listen when it's on the radio for the instrumental middle, with the acoustic guitar and electric piano. Great!

Hey Dawn!
A few good ones here. My faves in the group are It's A Heartache (like Bonnie's voice), Used Ta Be My Girl (best of the OJays( we talked about this group on Sat's post yesterday), and Baker Street (which, IMO, has one of the best intros of any song ever; what a sax!)
Also worthy of positive feedback are: Shadow Dancing (not bad, but not my fave by him), Love Is Like Oxygen (real good, but I prefer Fox on the Run and Little Willy), and Take a Chance On Me (One of the better Abba songs).
I'm kinda neutral to You Belong to Me (Carly has many much better songs) and Still The Same (appropriately titled - a lot of Segers stuff SOUNDS the same.)
Don't care for Dance with Me or Groove Line

Hi Dawn 10. I had a listen to this - and I don't remember it . I've always thought of them as one hit wonders . Always liked Boogie Nights. 9.I remember hearing this one - I might even have this on a K-tel compilation - I'll have to look:) 8.Just love this - we had the 45 in the house , a great track!! 7.Love Bob - my brother had the 8-track 6.Good tune 5. I always forget this one - but I do like it , nice harmonies 4. I like the feel of this song - one of their best. 3.Another 45 we had in the house always liked it 2. The Saxaphone just fits in so perfectly - great pop. 1.A friend's sister had the album back in '78. So sad he left us so young.

A ballad, just cracked the top 20.

WOW! What a great list! Of course, I grew up hearing my older sister's 45s, and off this list, she had all but 7, 6, and 3!
Of course, I did hear those 3 songs on the radio a lot. That was a great summer for pop music!

Here are links to clips of 'The Groove Line' www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=220575 and 'Dance With Me' www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=287702. I've loved 'The Groove Line' since it was current, but I don't remember hearing 'Dance With Me' very much back then. I absolutely agree with you about 'Baker Street' - it still sounds fantastic after all these years. I'd like to get that greatest hits CD sometime!

From your avatar, I thought that 'Dance With Me' must have been one of your favorites! It's a great song that really gets the ol' feet moving. 'Still the Same' is my favorite Bob Seger single as well. I especially love the piano work on it. An excellent choice to play at the pool hall! That's probably true about Andy - I remember he was hugely popular at this time. I've always loved 'Shadow Dancing' - it brings back a lot of great memories of that summer.

Great! I agree, 'Use Ta Be My Girl' is excellent, one of the O'Jays' best. As Sat pointed out yesterday in his opinion post, it really should be getting more airplay than it does. It's true that the lyrics to 'Love is Like Oxygen' aren't the best, but there is some outstanding instrumental work on it.

Don't care for Dance with Me or Groove Line Hey H2! You're absolutely right about the intro to 'Baker Street'. The saxophone work on it is superb, and really makes the song stand out. As I mentioned to Sat, I'd like to get his greatest hits CD sometime - I've really enjoyed every song I've heard of his. I think 'Take a Chance on Me' is one of Abba's better songs also. It has a nice edge to it that I've always liked.
