Let's take a look at the songs that were popular 35 years ago. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 13, 1968.
10. Indian Lake – Cowsills 9. Here Comes the Judge – Shorty Long 8. Stoned Soul Picnic – 5th Dimension 7. Angel of the Morning – Merilee Rush 6. The Look of Love – Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 5. Grazing in the Grass – Hugh Masekela 4. Lady Willpower – Gary Puckett & the Union Gap 3. Jumpin’ Jack Flash – Rolling Stones 2. The Horse – Cliff Nobles & Co. 1. This Guy’s in Love With You – Herb Alpert
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Wasn't doing to much at this point LOL being of course not even a year old 10. We had this 45 in the house , loved to sing along with it whenever it was played. 9. The title is familiar but the melody just isn't coming to me. 8.The Dimension had a great run of tunes - love this one. 7.I didn't hear the original until after Juice Newton's cover. Too bad Merilee didn't have more hits. I have this on a Ktel 3 record set of 50's / 60's tunes. 6.Kinda cool 5.Oh Yeah! - great stuff 4.I hardly ever hear Gary on The oldies station maybe I'm just listening at the wrong time . I have a couple of singles by him although I'm not sure if this is one of them. 3.Woo Hoo! after going psychedelic in '67 the stones return to the rock sound. I like the video clip of this as well. I have it on tape. 2.I just burned this on to a comp CD not too long ago along with Tighten Up . 1.I never realized well probably like most that he could sing because the Tijuana brass material is what I heard first.

Hey Dawn!
Just realized I missed this post. Mixed bag here. Like most of them, though.
Indian Lake - Catchy song, but the whoops make it somewhat politically incorrect today.
Here Comes The Judge - I think there were 2 or 3 versions of this song out at the same time. This one is the best.
Stoned Soul Picnic - Never cared for this, or most of the their early material. I think they got better as they went along.
Angel of the Morning - One of the first (I think) songs paying tribute to "ladies of the night". Real good song.
Look of Love - Not a Bad Cover. I prefer Dusty Springfield's version.
Grazing in the Grass - Fairly good instrumental. Liked it better than the Friends of Distinction's vocal interpretation that came out later.
Lady Willpower - Gary had already capitalized on that sound with Woman Woman and Young Girl. By the time he had this third soundalike song, it was beginning to wear a little thin.
Jumpin' Jack Flash - Oh Yeah! One of their best.
The Horse - Two similar instrumentals in the top 10 were too much. I didn't care for this one.
This Guy's In Love With You - It was great the first 1000 times I heard it in '68. Than it got tiring. Don't mind hearing it now, at all, and I don't hear it much.

I wasn't around yet, and this list ins't looking promising to me...
10) Like the group, but this is too bubblegummy for me 9) A good novelty song 8) Again, like the group but not this song 7) Don't like this one, no matter who does it. 6) It's an ok song. 5) The instrumental is good, but the one with words leaves a lot to be desired 4) This sounds like most Gary Puckett songs - my mom screamed and embarassed me when we saw him 3) Good Stones song - I always think of Whoopi Goldberg "Mick! Speak English!" 2) I don't believe I know this one... 1) I could take or leave it.

LOL! ;D I wasn't even born yet - wouldn't make my arrival until September! Here's a link to a clip of 'Here Comes the Judge'. I almost never hear it on the oldies stations. What's the title of that K-tel collection? I don't think I've ever seen a multi-album set of older hits - it sounds really cool! At one point, I heard Gary's songs pretty often on the radio, but not very much nowadays, it seems. I've always liked his work.

You're right about 'Here Comes the Judge', although I'm not sure if I've heard any of the other versions. As I mentioned to Ken, I seldom hear it on the oldies stations for some reason. It's true that some of Gary's songs sound pretty similar. I've always liked his stuff, though. 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' is a great one from the Stones, and one of their best late 60's tunes, IMO.

Here's a link to a clip of 'The Horse': www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003389/ref=ase_obscursongsfromt/102-6590349-0235349?v=glance&s=music. I really like the full brass sound.

It was released in 1972. I went to the Ktel classics website and found out that the U.S. version is different in not only song line up but where mine the Canadian version is a 3 record Set the U.S. version contains 4 Wow! Oh even though it's mostly 60's hits there are a few 50's tracks included:) Here Come The Judge - I like that! I don't think my oldies station has ever played it.

Isn't that K-tel website great? I didn't realize they had put out so many albums. As many as I have, there are a lot of them I'm still missing!

I LOVE that website! it's included in my "Favorites" list. I came across the site by accident and check it out quite often. I 've had my copy for a few years now I found it at our local swap meet . I've come across a couple of other copies but they weren't in as good condition.

I've come across a couple of other copies but they weren't in as good condition. It's in mine too! I was really happy to find that site! I think someone on YL had mentioned it at one time. There used to be another site with K-tel and Ronco discographies, but I don't think it's still up anymore. It used to be linked to Dee-T's 70's page, but that part of his page is under construction, so I'm not sure if it's changed URLs or not. Oh, I have a really hard time finding K-tels in good shape. It seems like the ones I run across were VERY well played!

A half and half list for me.
Don't know numbers 9,6,1.
Prefer the vocal version of Grazing.
Sick of Flash. Angel of the Morning is good. So is Stoned Soul Picnic.
Indian Lake and Lady Willpower are average.
The winner here is The Horse! LOVE that one! Surprised my Timeless Rock station hasn't played it yet!

I especially like the ad for one of the K-tel albums that he taped off the radio back then - do I ever remember those!

I like both versions of 'Grazing in the Grass', but the Friends of Distinction's version is a lot more energetic! Love the vocals! That is a surprise about 'The Horse'! I hear it pretty regularly on the oldies stations here. Great song!
