Today, let's take a look at another chart from the early 60's. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on July 28, 1962.
10. Ahab, the Arab – Ray Stevens 9. Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes) – Dee Dee Sharp 8. Breaking Up is Hard to Do – Neil Sedaka 7. Wolverton Mountain – Claude King 6. Speedy Gonzales – Pat Boone 5. The Stripper – David Rose 4. I Can’t Stop Loving You – Ray Charles 3. Sealed With a Kiss – Brian Hyland 2. The Wah Watusi – Orlons 1. Roses are Red – Bobby Vinton
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Yeesh, not a good chart for me! I don't know 4 of them! Those being 10, 9, 7, 6. 8. I actually prefer the slowed down 70s remake. Go figure. 5. Know it from weddings. Yeah, that's it. 4. This ranked on the Country Top 100 songs. Martina commented on it! Not bad. I like Elvis' take on Aloha From Hawaii. 3. Ok, a little too slow for me. 2. Good dance tune, probably the best here. 1. Eh.

10. Always enjoyed Ray's novelty tunes 9.The title is familiar but I don't think I've ever heard it 8.I like both versions but heard the 70's version first 7.I've never heard the tune all the way through - it's always included on those late night mail order CD collections. 6. I heard this when I was a kid - my aunt had a Greatest hits collection of various artists from the 50's and 60's and this was included - I remember Jerry Lee Lewis on there too. 5.Played this often at weddings 4.Good tune. 3.I've always this. 2.I've heard this a few times although not recently. 1.Not a big Vinton fan - but it's nice to hear once in a while.

1962--I wasn't born yet. Gee, it's good to be able to say that once in awhile. ;D Ahab the Arab--Ray Stevens was played a lot in our house. My dad really liked him. Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)--This is an ok song. One you don't hear much anymore. Breaking Up is Hard to Do--Another ok song. Was never a big fan of Neil's. Wolverton Mountain--No clue. Speedy Gonzales--Sounds familiar, but I can't place it at the moment. The Stripper--Can't remember the words to this one. (that was a joke. ) I Can't Stop Loving You--Very pretty song. Sealed With a Kiss--Like this one a lot. Wah Watusi--Not bad. I can dig it. Roses Are Red--Bobby Vinton was everywhere in the early 60's! ;D

1962! I think this is the earliest year you've done, Dawn. Many good memories. I was 18 that year.
Ahab the Arab - Established Ray Stevens as a top-notch musical comedian. I liked his comedic stuff a whole lot better than his "straight" music. With rings on her fingers, and bells on her toes and a bone in her nose, ho ho.! ;D
Gravy - A weak followup to an early '60s dance classic. (Mashed Potato Time)
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do - Great song! May be the definitive bubblegum song of the pre-bubblegum era (if that makes any sense).
Wolverton Mountain - Where the heck did this come from?? How did it ever get on the pop charts? Whatever! I love the song. Might sneak into my next compilation of my all time top 250.
Speedy Gonzales - A little different for Pat, and one of his best -- although today it would be panned for stereotyping.
The Stripper - The Big Band sound wasn't quite dead.
I Can't Stop Loving You - Woo Hoo! A fusion of R&B and country sung by a master.
Sealed With A Kiss - Good song. A summer classic.
The Wah Watusi - One of 300 dance crazes of the early '60s. Not bad. Liked the bass singer.
Roses are Red - I like this mainly because my father used to sing it -- off key, wrong words, and with an accent (violence are blue).

Eh. I'm with you about 'Breaking Up is Hard to Do' - the slower version is much better, IMO. I just wish he hadn't stuck that segment of the original onto the beginning of it - it doesn't really go together well. 'I Can't Stop Loving You' is such a classic.

I'm pretty sure I heard the 70's version of 'Breaking Up is Hard to Do' first also. That's a song that I almost never hear on the oldies stations. That is so true about 'Wolverton Mountain' and those CD collections! Although it's not really a comical song, I always laugh when I hear it, because of the way old Clifton Clowers is described!

I remember my cousin Suzy and I liked to listen to it a lot when we were kids. LOL about 'The Stripper'! I agree about Bobby Vinton - it seems like he keeps turning up on most every early 60's chart! ;D

I think you're right about 1962 being the earliest year we've looked at so far. But a 1961 chart is coming up very soon! That's a good description of 'Breaking Up is Hard to Do' - it does have a very early "bubblegum" quality to it. I agree, 'Wolverton Mountain' is kind of a surprise on this chart! It's definitely more of a country and western song than a pop one.

We're about at my limit for early music, in terms of stuff I like.
10) This one is ok. A good novelty song. "Every evening about midnight he'd jump on his camel named Clyde" 9) I don't know this one, but I assume it's a dance number. 8) I always think of "Better Off Dead" when I hear this one, and him changing the radio to all the break-up songs, and finally this one comes on, he pulls the radio (complete with 8-track player) out and chucks it down the street. 7) Eh. My grandpa's kind of stuff. 6) Not familiar with this one, but my cousins (whose last name is Gonzales) had a miniature poodle named Speedy. 5) One we used to love to play in band. 4) Eh. I like Ray, but this one really isn't my cup of tea. 3) One of my mom's favorites. She saw him with the Dick Clark show when it came to Sunbury many years ago (when they stopped in pidly little towns like that). 2) Not familiar with this one, but I can do the dance. 1) No thanks.

I love the lyrics to 'Ahab the Arab'! I think it's one of Ray's funnier songs. Yes, I think 'Gravy' was supposed to be a follow-up to 'Mashed Potato Time'. I've hardly ever heard it, though. That was a cute name for the poodle!
