Let's go back 17 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on August 16, 1986.
10. The Edge of Heaven - Wham! 9. Take My Breath Away - Berlin 8. Rumors - Timex Social Club 7. Dancing on the Ceiling - Lionel Richie 6. Venus - Bananarama 5. We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart 4. Higher Love - Steve Winwood 3. Mad About You - Belinda Carlisle 2. Glory of Love - Peter Cetera 1. Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

10. Don't actually know this one, but Wham! is great. 9. One of the greatest songs ever! Wow! It "takes my breath away" every time! 8. Never heard of it. 7. Cute song. Catchy. 6. I really liked this one. Cool 80s tune. 5. I heard this song once and wanted to kill myself! This is probably the worst song I ever heard in my life!!!! 4. This one's good, if I'm thinking of the right song. 3. I liked this song, but I thought Heaven is a Place on Earth was better. 2. Don't know this version. 1. One of Madonna's great older tunes. But, I have to say, Kelly Osbourne's cover is better.

The Edge of Heaven--I know I know this one, but can't think of the tune right now.
Take My Breath Away--Never liked it, for some reason.
Rumors--Not bad. Haven't heard it in years.
Dancing on the Ceiling--Kinda dumb.
Venus--It's all right. Liked the original better.
We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off--and I don't have to listen to this song, either. LOL!
Higher Love--A little of this song goes a long way. Heard it WAY too much, and I'm tired of it now.
Mad About You--Shoulda been the theme song to the TV show "Mad About You". LOL!
Glory of Love--A little too sappy.
Papa Don't Preach--Another song that I've heard too much.

Not too bad today. It would be a little over a month until I saw the Monkees live for the first time, and a little less than a year until I saw Weird Al (w/ the Monkees - great show) for the first time. 10) Not too bad. Wham's last song. It says "goodbye" at the end of the video. 9) I love Berlin, but got tired of this song. 8) This one isn't too bad, but I love the parody "Roaches" - not sure who does it "How do roaches get started? Started by dirty people and they be nasty, filthy, slummy, they house they never clean it." 7) Pass on this one. 6) Love this one. 5) This guy was trying to make a point - then I find out he died of complications due to HIV - HELLO! 4) Another good song. 3) Eh. Prefered her w/the GoGo's. 2) Got way tired of this one. There's a station around here who still plays it every day. 1) Never liked this one.

I'm not as much of a fan of George Michael's solo work, but I like many of the Wham! hits. I like 'Mad About You', but I agree that it's not her best.

'Dancing on the Ceiling' always seemed a little forced, like he was trying too hard to duplicate the feel of 'All Night Long'. Not bad, but not one of my top favorites of his. LOL about 'Venus'! I don't mind the song, but I've never cared for the video much. Like you, I think the original is the better of the two versions - love that guitar in it! I agree - Peter should have never left Chicago. Both his and the group's music went downhill after that.

I agree - 'Mad About You' would have been a perfect theme for that show! I'm surprised they didn't use it!

I like 'Take My Breath Away', but like you I grew tired of hearing it back then. I agree about Belinda Carlisle. She had some good solo songs, but I've always liked her work with the Go-Go's more.

Hey Dawn! For some reason, I missed your weekend Billboard posts. So... 1986 on a Monday morning. Edge of Heaven - OK. Not my fave. Take My Breath Away - Really never cared for this one - in Top Gun or elsewhere Rumors - Pretty good song Dancing On The Ceiling - Not one of Lionel's better songs. Even though I know NOTHING about music videos, I do remember hearing that in this one, Lionel copied a clip from an old Fred Astaire movie. Venus - OK, but I prefer the Shocking Blue version We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off - This song could seriously contend for a position in my all time bottom 10. Higher Love - Good song! Mad About You - Another one that I like. (hmm, we seem to be improving in the upper part of the chart) Glory of Love - I like this one a lot. The only thing that was missing was the backing of the rest of Chicago. Papa Don't Preach - For some reason I'll never understand, especially since I can't stand Madonna, I like this song.

10. Funny, whenever I listened to Wham, I felt like I was on the edge of hell! Actually don't know this song. 9. Not a bad tune, but sick of it. 8. Don't know it, but judging by the band name, that's probably a good thing. 7. ICK. 6. A slap in the face to Shocking Blue. 5. Who says we don't? Nice try, but a bit corny. 4. Have the 45, but has been overplayed over the years. 3. Not a bad song, I just don't go out of my way to listen to Belinda solo. 2. For some reason, Peter wanted to sing stuff like this instead of Dialogue Parts 1 & 2. I can't figure it out. 1. Not a fave from Madonna. Liked Open Your Heart much better. And the video.

That's interesting about the Fred Astaire clip in the Lionel Richie video - I hadn't known that! I'll keep an eye out for it on VH-1 Classic. I really like Steve Winwood's music, and I agree, 'Higher Love' is a good song. Unfortunately, the stations here have really overplayed it.

He has a lot of talent, but his solo songs such as 'Glory of Love' don't really showcase it to best advantage, IMO.

I didn't mean that Fred's clip was IN the video, just thatit inspired Lionelto do something similar in his video. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Hi Dawn - A miracle has happened. A late 80s chart that actually has songs on it I know.
10. Edge of Heaven - Never really liked much that Wham did.
9. Take My Breath Away - Great song from a great movie. My favorite from this chart.
8. Rumours - ?
7. Dancing on the Ceiling - One of Lionel's better solo efforts.
6. Venus - Good song, just not in the same league as Shocking Blue's original.
5. We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - ?
4. Higher Love - 2nd favorite on the chart. Great song.
3. Mad About You - Not my favorite by Belinda, but a good song.
2. Glory of Love - Ouch.
1. Papa Don't Preach - Actually one of Madonna's better songs.
