Let's go back 40 years today. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on August 24, 1963.
10. Denise – Randy & the Rainbows 9. (You’re the) Devil in Disguise – Elvis Presley 8. More – Kai Winding 7. Wipe Out – Surfaris 6. Blowin’ in the Wind – Peter, Paul & Mary 5. Judy’s Turn to Cry – Lesley Gore 4. My Boyfriend’s Back – Angels 3. Candy Girl – Four Seasons 2. Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh – Allan Sherman 1. Fingertips – Pt. 2 – Little Stevie Wonder
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

The only tune I'm not familiar with is #8
10. Excellent track - I've always enjoyed it. first heard it in the early 80's
9.I love the way El sings this.
7.One of the best instrumentals of all time!
6.Probably one of the first folk songs I heard remember hearing their version before Bob's.
5.Always enjoyed Leslie's voice . She had a nice string of hits.
4.An oldie I remember from when I was little. Remember singing along with the back up vocals LOL
3.Haven't heard this in a long time.
2.More childhood memories!
1.The tune that started the ball rolling for Stevie - fantastic stuff.

Ten years before my time, so my parents would have been 15.
10) My mom's cousin was named Denise. She loved this song (she used to take mom to Bandstand when it was still in Philly). 9) I love this sequence in Lilo and Stitch. It's FUNNY! 8) There were countless versions of this. 7) One of dad's favorites and a staple at $5 days. 6) Eh. I prefer Bob's version. 5) No. I didn't like "It's My Party" and did not like this one. 4) No thanks. 3) Not bad. I have the 45. 2) Good early novelty tune. 1) I gotta dig out the Stevie cd and find this....

Hey Dawn! Typical pre-Beatles chart, that will likely get trashed by many. Brings a lot of memories back for me, though.
10. Denise - Sounded like a 4 Seasons rip-off. Not a bad song.
9. (You’re the) Devil in Disguise - Not one of Elvis' best remembered songs, but a pretty decent one.
8. More - This, I believe was an instrumental version. It was so-so. I liked the Vic Dana vocal version better (and I didn't like THAT one very much)
7. Wipe Out - Another instrumental. Great party song! The flip side, however, was Surfer Joe and was a vocal.
6. Blowin’ in the Wind - IMO, the best version of the Dylan song.
5. Judy’s Turn to Cry - Follow up to It's My Party. It sounded like every other followup of that time. That is, it sounded just like the original. It wasn't until after this song that Lesley began to record more sophisticated music that made us realize that there was some real talent there.
4. My Boyfriend’s Back - Couldn't stand this song. You could almost hear them snapping their chewing gum.
3. Candy Girl - Not one of the Seasons best remembered songs, but a good one. When it first was released, the Boston DJs were playing the flip (Marlena) more often, and then slowly switched.
2. Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh - Very funny novelty song. This was Allan's most popular, but he had several others that were equally as good.
1. Fingertips – Pt. 2 - I'm sorry. This just sounded like a twelve or thirteen year old boy who could play the harmonica. His real talent manifested later.

10. Cool tune. I like it.
9. A classic from the King. Of course, one of the highlights of the pre Invasion era.
8. Don't know it.
7. Overplayed.
6. A song I know, I know how it goes, but I don't know which version I have heard.
5. Pretty good. May have to pick up a Gore collection.
4. Another overplayed oldie.
3. Another pre Invasion highlight. I tend to forget they were one of the bright spots of this time.
2. Novelty tune. Corny, but ok.
1. I liked his 70's stuff better.

I remember hearing it at the roller rink many times when I was growing up. Great guitar work! Like you, I was first familiar with this version of 'Blowin' in the Wind'. I actually didn't hear Bob's version until fairly recently.

This is probably my favorite version. 'Candy Girl' is one of my favorite Four Seasons songs from the 60's. I love Frankie's falsetto vocal on it - he can really hit those high notes!

I'd never thought about it before, but you're right about 'Denise' sounding like the Four Seasons! I've grown to like the song more and more in recent years. Yes, this 'More' is an instrumental - kind of orchestral-sounding. I hear both this version and Vic Dana's occasionally on the "Music of Your Life" station here. I agree about Lesley - although these early songs were catchy, they didn't really make the most of her talent. I prefer her later work, like 'California Nights'.

I like 'My Boyfriend's Back', but agree that it's been overplayed over the years. I'm the same way with the Four Seasons - when I'm thinking of early rock era artists, sometimes I tend to forget them. They had some great songs, though.
