Half and half list. Half good, half bad.
10. Cheesy 70's stuff, better than Englebert though!
9. Good tune, not his best.
8. Great one! My fave on this list!
7. Good song, all of the Carpenters stuff was.
6. Not my style.
5. Good one, hear it lots on the Timeless Rock station these days.
4. Don't really know it, but I'm not big on him.
3. Tired of this one, overplayed.
2. Good song, but so sad!
1. Decent song, a bit overplayed, getting there anyway.

Back to 1972 when top 40 was good 10. Remember this back then - an ok tune - Mac was very popular with the ladies at the time LOL 9. Fantastic tune bought the 45 back in the early 80's 8.Yes! great childhood memories! remember singing this around the house LOL 7.The title doesn't ring a bell I'd have to hear it. 6.Didn't hear this until the 80's 5.Remember this well! Love Rod's keyboard playing . Always love it. Have it on cassette and CD. 4.Doesn't ring a bell either. I'm only familiar with a couple of Al's songs. 3.A huge fave !! we had the 45 in the house and it was played often . Love Bobby Elliot's drumming and what a great opening guitar riff. 2. A great if somewhat sad tune . Where is Gilbert now? 1.One of my many favorites from '72 Great song to sing along with.

Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me--A little too much on the macho/chauvinistic side for my taste.
You Don't Mess Around With Jim--OH YEAH! No such thing as too much Croce for me!("Even if you do got a two-piece custom-made pool cue...")
Coconut--Haven't heard this one in AGES. Think I'd rather have "Without You" instead.
Goodbye To Love--Incredibly sad song, especially considering the fact that Karen was only 22 at the time(that's a pretty heavy statement to make at that age).
If Loving You Is Wrong--I know this is considered a soul classic, but like I said before, I'm becoming a curmudgeon in my old age. If you're having trouble with a relationship, you either work things out or end it honorably, not two-time the person! *steps off soapbox and raises hand to shield self from flying produce*
Hold Your Head Up--Repetitive as h-e-double-hockey-sticks, but it's catchy, dangit!
I'm Still In Love With You--Prefer "Let's Stay Together," but not bad.
Long Cool Woman--Good song to crank up in the car, even if I can't figure out the lyrics worth a dang! ;D
Alone Again(Naturally)--A classic song, but a MAJOR downer.
Brandy(You're A Fine Girl)Great song with a good storyline. Should've had more hits.

Ok. Before my time, but I believe I know most of these. It would have been about this time we had the bad flood around here. My parents had just moved into the house and out of the trailer they were living in. For entertainment (because they couldn't go anywhere) they would drive to Shikellamy Lookout and watch the trailers float down the river, hit the bridge, and come out toothpicks on the other side. They saw the trailer they just moved out of meet it's demise....
10) Eh. It's ok. 9) Good song. Loved Jim Croce. 8) It's not bad, but it's not fabulous. I can listen to it. 7) One of the few that they do that I like. 6) No thanks. 5) Good song. I have it on a K-Smel compilation. 4) Not sure about this one. 3) Not too bad. 2) Like this one. Depressing, but infectiously catchy. 1) I had gotten sick of it but it's growing on me again.

Let's see... Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me--Eh. I can take it or leave it. You Don't Mess Around With Jim--Love this one. Croce was a cool guy. Coconut--Just bought a Greatest Hits CD of Nilsson at a garage sale not too long ago for a buck. Coconut's a great tune. Goodbye to Love--Karen had such a rich, lush voice. This song is a great example of it. If Loving You is Wrong--Never one of my favorites. Hold Your Head Up--Really like it. Haven't heard it for a long time. I'm Still in Love With You--Al Green's not usually my style, but this one's not bad. Long Cool Woman--Good song, but a little overplayed. Alone Again Naturally--Awfully depressing, but I still enjoy listening to it. Brandy--A friend of mine named her oldest daughter after this song.

I remember I first heard it as a snippet on the record ‘Convention ‘72’ by the Delegates, but didn’t hear the entire song until about 4 or 5 years ago. I read that ‘Goodbye to Love’ is considered to be the first power ballad ever recorded. That electric guitar solo in it must have raised a lot of eyebrows at the time!

Like you, I don’t remember ‘If Loving You is Wrong’ from back then – I think I first heard it in the late 80’s or early 90’s. I’ve always been more familiar with Barbara Mandrell’s cover from 1979. Oh, me too! ‘Hold Your Head Up’ is one of my favorite early 70’s rock songs. I remember hearing it a lot that summer! I haven’t heard anything about Gilbert in quite a while, but it would be interesting to see what he’s up to nowadays.

I agree with what you said about ‘Goodbye to Love’. Not many singers that age could pull off ballads such as that one and ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’, but Karen does a wonderful job with those songs. LOL about ‘Long Cool Woman’! I always like to crank that one up in the car also!

I don’t remember much about it, but I’ve seen old newspaper photos of the rising water. That’s pretty scary about your parents’ former trailer! I’m pretty sure have that K-tel album you mentioned – Believe in Music is the title, I think. If I recall correctly, ‘Hold Your Head Up’ is edited down a lot on that album. ‘Alone Again (Naturally) is very depressing, but I agree, there is a catchy quality to it.

I remember seeing Jim’s Behind the Music profile a few years ago. He seemed as though he was a very nice guy, very down-to-earth and approachable. That was a great buy on that Nilsson Greatest Hits CD! He had quite a few good songs, but for some reason, most of them don’t get played very often on oldies stations nowadays. I’ve always liked the name ‘Brandy’ also!

I wish ‘Goodbye to Love’ received more airplay than it does. It’s definitely one of their finest songs, but I hardly ever hear it on the radio. Karen’s voice is superb as always, and I like Richard’s arrangement of it. ‘I’m Still in Love With You’ is one of my favorites from Al. I don’t remember hearing his songs very often when I was younger, but I’ve really grown to like his music in recent years.

Hey Dawn! Catch up time again. 10. Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me - OK song. (I guess even his wife didn't get hooked on Mac. She left him for Glen Campbell 9. You Don't Mess Around With Jim - This is the one that got Jim on the charts. Jim was a great talent who we had for far too short a time. RIP 8. Coconut - Great song. This one and Jump Into the Fire are the two that I consider very underplayed. 7. Goodbye to Love - Love this song. Never thought of it as a "power ballad" before, but I guess it is. Great guitar. 6. (If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right - In my all time top 250. Great soul ballad. -- and now, unfortunaltely one of those songs "stolen" for a TV commercial. 5. Hold Your Head Up - Real good song. Definitely shows some of Rod's Zombie roots. 4. I'm Still in Love With You - Al has a good sound, but all of his songs so much alike, that they're hard to tell apart. (I have this problem with Al and with Barry White). 3. Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) - Woo hoo! The Hollies doing hard rock! Love it! 2. Alone Again (Naturally) - I echo everyone else's sentiments. Good song. So sad. -- But how did such a melancholy song get to be (depending on the source) the #1 or #2 song of the year? 1. Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Very good song. Looking Glass is not a one hit wonder, however. They followed with Jimmy Loves Marianne about a year later. It peaked in the 30s.

It is kind of ironic, though, especially considering how popular he was with the ladies back then, as Ken mentioned. I couldn’t agree with you more about ‘Jump Into the Fire’ being underplayed. ‘Me and My Arrow’ is another one that isn’t heard much on the radio, but I do hear ‘Without You’ and ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ every so often. ‘Jimmy Loves Marianne’ was a great, but very overlooked, follow-up to ‘Brandy’. Of the two songs, I’d have to say that ‘Jimmy’ is my favorite.
