This is how the top 10 section of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart appeared on September 3, 1966.
10. Summertime – Billy Stewart 9. Blowin’ in the Wind – Stevie Wonder 8. Working in the Coal Mine – Lee Dorsey 7. Land of 1000 Dances – Wilson Pickett 6. Sunny – Bobby Hebb 5. Yellow Submarine – Beatles 4. You Can’t Hurry Love – Supremes 3. See You in September – Happenings 2. Summer in the City – Lovin’ Spoonful 1. Sunshine Superman - Donovan
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Hey Dawn! A couple of good ones, but not a very strong chart overall, IMO. 10. Summertime - Was this ever a weird song. Very different arrangement of an old standard. I'm kinda lukewarm to it. 9. Blowin’ in the Wind - This was a different arrangement also. While I appreciate Stevie's talent. I don't care for this particular arrangement. Prefer Peter Paul and Mary for this song. 8. Working in the Coal Mine - Not bad, but overplayed. 7. Land of 1000 Dances - Good song. I like both this and the Cannibal version. 6. Sunny - Back in the day, people LOVED this song. I could never see what all the excitement was about. Very mediocre, IMO. 5. Yellow Submarine - Fun song. Catchy tune. - and it's the Beatles! 4. You Can’t Hurry Love - Not their best; not their worst. 3. See You in September - What's with all the weird arrangements on the chart today? Absolutley hated this version when it came out. Still not too fond of it. Loved the original by the Tempos (that I NEVER hear anymore). 2. Summer in the City - I know many people who consider this the best song of the mid-60s. It is a good song, but not even my favorite by the Spoonful. 1. Sunshine Superman - Decent, but not his best, IMO. (Wow! I've been pretty critical today. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood. )

I'm with H2-this isn't one of the better charts, considering the year! 10. Don't know it. 9. Never heard his version. 8. Eh. Typical overplayed oldie. 7. Best version of this song! (Although the WWF wrestlers did a great version in 1985! Pete will back me up!) 6. See number 8. 5. Not their best but better than many other artist's songs. 4. Not my fave from them. 3. This tune isn't too bad. 2. One of my faves from the Spoonful. Love the traffic sounds on it. 1. One of my faves from Donnie. Still love hearing it.

4. You Can’t Hurry Love - Not their best; not their worst. Agreed. That's the only song I really have any opinion of today...

Hey Dawn 10. I thought his vocals were very..... different LOL I have warmed up to it somewhat over the years. 9.I'm aware of his version but have never heard it. 8. I like it! 7.This has always been a big fave even if it has been overplayed .I have his best of on vinyl. 6. I thought it was pretty good , I remember my Aunt had the tune on a 60's compilation cassette that I use to listen to when we would go and visit . 5. I remember singing this around the house when I was very little I loved it ! 4. To me one of their best 3.A very nice tune I heard for the first time in the early 80's. 2.Have been a big Spoonful fgan for a very long time one of the ultimate summer songs. 1.Added this to the collection of 45's in the 80's always loved Donovan.

Exactly one week before my time(hint, hint )! Summertime--Unique, to say the least. Blowin' In The Wind--Prefer Peter, Paul & Mary's version. Working In The Coal Mine--Decent tune. Land Of 1000 Dances--Prefer Cannibal & The Headhunters. Sunny--OK, if a bit overplayed. Yellow Submarine--Fun song; one of Ringo's best vocals. You Can't Hurry Love--Classic Motown. See You In September--I can take it or leave it. Summer In The City--Another fun, catchy number. Sunshine Superman-- Decent tune, but where the heck did that title come from?

Hi Dawn -
10. Summertime - Ok
9. Blowin' in the Wind - Like Stevie, just don't like him doing this song.
8. Working in a Coal Mine - Good song, just overplayed.
7. Land of 1000 Dances - Wilson always did great songs.
6. Sunny - Kind of simple tune, good song, just not as good as this chart would indicate.
5. Yellow Submarine - Fun song and it's Ringo.
4. You Can't Hurry Love - Not their best. Phil Collins' version is better (imo)
3. See You in September - Not the best version of this song.
2. Summer in the City - The best summer song ever.
1. Sunshine Superman - Donovan did much better.

7. Best version of this song! (Although the WWF wrestlers did a great version in 1985! Pete will back me up!) "I'm gonna strech ya', from here to New Jersey" Actually, I'm partial to the Cannibal & Headhunters version, because it's the first version I knew.

"I'm gonna crush you, then I'll see you later." LOL! I forgot about that great line, from Jesse The Body! I have the video on tape somewhere, I'll have to dig it out! Oh, how I miss the cheesy wrestling of the 80's!

I was watching it tonight, and it's just not the same. I mean, think of that video, all the talent! Piper, Muraco, Valentine, Adonis, Funk, Orndorff, Steamboat. And guys who hadn't peaked yet like Savage and Bret! I have it on tape, right off MTV!

Kind of like "There's two hours of my life I'll never get back!" Long live Piper's Pit! And The Body Shop, "The pleasure was yours!"

And The Body Shop, "The pleasure was yours!" I used to get SO frustrated at the end of WCW because I had liked it so much, and they just were wasting the talent they had! Even after Eddie, Benoit, Saturn and Malenko walked out, they got ECW guys that had talent and they wasted it!

I couldn’t agree more about ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’. Stevie recorded some great songs in the 60’s, but to me this is one of his weaker singles. Peter, Paul and Mary’s is the better version. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Tempos' version of ‘See You in September’, but I’d like to check it out sometime.

Still love hearing it. ‘Yellow Submarine’ is catchy, but I agree that it’s not among their very best songs. Still, it’s always fun to sing along with, and fits well on the Revolver album. I’m with you about the Spoonful. Although there are one or two of their songs I like more, this one definitely ranks among my favorites. I love those traffic effects too!
