Let's jump back a year from yesterday's chart. These were the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on September 8, 1973.
10. Here I Am (Come and Take Me) – Al Green 9. Gypsy Man – War 8. We’re An American Band – Grand Funk 7. Live and Let Die – Wings 6. Loves Me Like a Rock – Paul Simon 5. Touch Me in the Morning – Diana Ross 4. Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose – Tony Orlando & Dawn 3. Delta Dawn – Helen Reddy 2. Brother Louie – Stories 1. Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gaye
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

This chart's a little better than the last one. I didn't even bother to post on that one!
I don't even know 6-10.
5. Good, but it just sounds wrong. What kind of a song title is that? Or maybe I'm just perverted... 4. Don't think I know this one. 3. So many people have done this song, it's not even funny. BUT- it is a great song. I prefer Bette Midler's version (of course). 2. Don't know it. 1. This song has really grown on me. I used to hate it. Now...well, let's just say, "I don't hate it." Anybody who's ever watched Mary Kate and Ashley's show "So Little Time" will get that "I don't hate it" thing. So we might as well say nobody will get it...LOL.

10. Probably know it, don't know.
9. Don't know it.
8. Still a classic. Critics have their collective head up their collective ass.
7. Good rocker, NOT done better by G-n-R.
6. Not really big on him.
5. No thanks.
4. Honestly only know the title.
3. Memories of the 70's, but not a song I'd listen to.
2. A classic, still like it.
1. Classic soul tune.

Hey Dawn. - So, which Dawn are you? Tony Orlando and---, or Delta? ;D
10. Here I Am (Come and Take Me) - One of Al's "all my songs sound alike". Not bad.
9. Gypsy Man - OK; not my fave by them
8. We’re An American Band - Always liked this one
7. Live and Let Die - Great sound. (I agree GNR version is not as good, but I like both versions,)
6. Loves Me Like a Rock - I like many of his songs, but this is not one of them.
5. Touch Me in the Morning - One of my favorites among her solos -- which means it's nearly up to mediocre.
4. Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose – They were kinda trying to capitalize on the nightclubby/production number style song that they succeeded with in Tie A Yellow Ribbon. I liked their old style (Candida, Knock Three Times) better.
3. Delta Dawn - I liked the Tanya Tucker version better (surprising since I'm not a counntry fan).
2. Brother Louie - Good song. Also like the original Hot Chocolate version. I've put them back to back on one of my "Play It Again" cds.
1. Let’s Get It On - Good song. Always liked it.

Ok - I would be very close to being born (a little over a month away)
10) Not bad - like H2 says, his stuff kind of sounds alike. 9) Not familiar. 8) Not big on southern rock - way overplayed around here. 7) Great song - much better than GnR any day. 6) Another great song - fun to sing along to. 5) Pass - no thanks. 4) Again, no thanks. 3) My mom was always singing this one - please, mom, stop! 2) Not bad - the meaning was lost on me until about 10 years ago when I really listened to it. 1) Classic! Love Marvin.

Hi Dawn - Good Chart
10. Here I Am - Another top 10 for Al Green.
9. Gypsy Man - Good song from War
8. We're An American Band - Great song. When I saw GFR in 1975, they had a lighted American Flag at the back of the stage during this song.
7. Live & Let Die - Good one from Paul.
6. Loves Me Like a Rock - Ok song from Paul.
5. Touch Me in The Morning - Maybe my favorite song from Diana's solo career.
4. Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose - Two gypsy songs in the same chart. This one probably shouldn't have been done.
3. As good as Helen sounds on this song, I prefer Tanya Tucker's country version better.
2. Brother Louie - Another one hit wonder song that wasn't bad.
1. Let's Get It On - The late, great Marvin Gaye continues on with the hits.

'Touch Me in the Morning' is kind of a suggestive song title, I agree, especially for the early 70's. You're right about 'Delta Dawn' - I've heard many versions of it also. I don't think I'm familiar with Bette's, though. LOL! I've never watched "So Little Time", but I like that expression!

I agree - 'Let's Get It On' is one of the great classic soul songs.

I'm all over this chart, aren't I? ;D You're right about Al Green - many of his songs do have a similar sound. I've never warmed up to this one as much as some of his others, although it's nicely done. I like 'Loves Me Like a Rock', but agree that Paul had much better songs. That's a great idea about the two 'Brother Louies' back to back! I had always thought the two versions would be more similar, but they have a totally different "feel".

I remember hearing that song often that summer, along with 'Smoke on the Water'. That cowbell is so cool! I like Helen's version of 'Delta Dawn', but there's something about Tanya's voice that's a little more suited to the song's style. Both of those versions bring back a lot of memories. Marvin's vocals on 'Let's Get It On' are wonderful!

Love Marvin. I seem to remember my mom singing 'Delta Dawn' when I was younger also! I didn't understand the meaning of 'Brother Louie' either at first, but I absolutely loved it back when it was current (still do!). I've read that it caused quite a stir when it was released.

I really enjoyed reading your bio! ) 'Gypsy Man' is probably favorite song of War's next to 'All Day Music'. I wasn't familiar with it until about 4 years ago, but I've loved it ever since. That must have been great to have seen Grand Funk in concert then - they were really at their peak at that time. The lighted flag sounds neat, too. That gypsy theme must have been popular back then - there was also Cher's 'Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves' not too long before this!
