All You Need is Love - Beatles 5. The Letter - Box Tops 4. Baby I Love You - Aretha Franklin 3. Come Back When You Grow Up - Bobby Vee 2. Reflections - Diana Ross & the Supremes 1. Ode to Billie Joe - Bobbie Gentry
Any thoughts or memories of these songs?

Decent mixture of stuff, although there are many "typical" oldies on here.
10. A classic that gets overlooked on oldies radio, and only GREAT classic rock stations play.
9. Good, fun tune.
8. Their signature tune, but I am tired of it.
7. Don't know it, actually.
6. Typical oldie, but hey, it's the Beatles!
5. A classic to be sure, but I hear it often enough.
4. Don't know it.
3. Don't know it.
2. One of my faves from Queen Diva and Company.
1. A great song that I found I like hearing spontaneously rather then when I go to play it myself.

Hey Dawn. My favorite year; definitely more good songs than bad ones. One top 250. 10. San Franciscan Nights - Fine song, that has seemed to disappear. Can't remember the last time I heard it. 9. Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie - Not a bad song at all. Thought this group would hang around a little longer than they did. 8. Light My Fire - #1 song of the year on many surveys. In my top #250. Love the album cut. Even like the way-too-short 45 version. 7. You're My Everything - I'm drawing a complete blank on this song. I'm sure I know the song, I'm sure I own the 45. But I can't place it at all. (I'll pull out the 45 when I get home tonight. 6. All You Need is Love - Good song. Got tired of it for a while, but like it again. 5. The Letter - Great song with great memories. I like all three versions of this. 4. Baby I Love You - The Queen of Soul was at her best that year. 3. Come Back When You Grow Up - A comeback song for Bobby. It wasn't bad at all, but I really liked his Buddy Holly-esque earlier music. 2. Reflections - The melody and the lyrics were not bad at all. Their attempt to go psychadellic, however, was pitiful. 1. Ode to Billie Joe - Very good song! Great mystery. May be in my next top 250 compilation.

Another winning chart!
10. Rather laid back song for them, their first of 2 songs in a row that captured American counterculture. 9. Yes! LOVE it! A while back, got a CD of them! 8. What to say? My #1 of the year as well! 7. This and former "All I Need" are VERY ignored. I don't play it half as much, but it's good. 6. Love, love, love... She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah! 5. Ugh. Make it stop. Won't play this at a party either. ALL follow-ups were much better. 4. The Queen couldn't do wrong! Pretty good one here. 3. LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Very laid back, but one of the 60's BEST easy songs! Somehow fascinated with the chimes. 2. Overplayed. Nearly every other time when I turn on oldies radio in the car, this gets played! I'd rather remember that intro sound effect in some Palmolive (?)ad. 1. Nice tune. Not overplayed, yet don't wanna hear it hours on end. Real sad. Won the New Artist Grammy on the strength of this song.

The summer of love..... 10) Not familiar with this one (It's not the "we gotta get out of this place" one is it?) 9) It's bubblegummy, but infectious 8) LOVE it! Have a wicked cool blacklight poster of Jim Morrison with flames under him. When you blacklight it, it looks like the flames are flickering - creepy! 7) Not bad. 6) LOVE it too! 5) Good song. 4) I know a song with this title but not sure if this is it - when I've heard it, it's always by someone else. 3) Eh. 2) Not bad. 1) Good song - one hit wonder pretty much.

Hi Dawn - Another great chart. Summer of '67, like the Summer of '69, was a great summer for music.
10. San Franciscan Nights - Great song and I echo all the previous comments about how forgotten it is.
9. Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie - Makes me hungry just commenting about it.
8. Light My Fire - The best song of the year, in my all-time top ten, great great song.
7. You're My Everything - ?
6. All You Need is Love - Another winner from the Beatles.
5. The Letter - Classic from the Box Tops, love the Joe C@ocker version as well.
4. Baby I Love You - Good song from the Queen of Soul.
3. Come Back When You Grow Up - Never liked much of Bobby Vee's music.
2. Reflections - One of my favorites from Diana & the gals.
1. Ode to Billie Joe - A little touch of country on the pop charts, good song, really good movie.

This is a pretty good mix of songs, I agree. I've never understood why 'San Franciscan Nights' doesn't get more airplay than it does. It's really well done, but like 'Help Me Girl' and 'Monterey', is very forgotten by oldies radio. You can't go wrong with the Beatles! BTW, I read in yesterday's paper about a station in Charlottesville that's going to an all-Beatles format! Wish we could get it here! 'Reflections' is a nice one from the Supremes, and a bit of a departure in style for them. I like the cool sound effects in it.

I'm surprised that Jay & the Techniques didn't have more hits also. Both this one and 'Keep the Ball Rollin' are great, but they didn't have much success after that, unfortunately. I'm the same way with 'You're My Everything' - I have it on a greatest hits cassette, but I can't think of it either offhand. 'Come Back When You Grow Up' is a nice one from Bobby, although it surprised me at first to see it on the chart - I had thought it was a little older than that.

Won the New Artist Grammy on the strength of this song. 'Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie' is a huge fave of mine also! Is the CD a greatest hits collection? You are absolutely right about those two Temptations songs - neither of them get any airplay on the oldies stations here. 'All I Need' is superb - my favorite of theirs. I think I might have mentioned this before in another post, but I was terribly upset by the Ode to Billie Joe TV movie when I saw it in 1977. A very sad song, I agree.

I like the Cupid smiley - he's cute! 'San Franciscan Nights' - No, this is a different one - a little more mellow-sounding than most of their other songs. Here is the link to a clip of it: www.mymusic.com/product.asp?curr=0&myptr=addany&muzenbr=86896. That does sound like a cool poster of Jim! You can get some really neat effects with the blacklight! There's another 'Baby I Love You' that was popular a couple of years after this one, by Andy Kim. I've heard a few different versions of it, so that may be the one you're thinking of.

'Light My Fire' is truly a classic, and was cutting-edge for its time, IMO. The long version is a must, though. I love watching the footage of the Beatles recording 'All You Need is Love' on the Our World telecast. That song was definitely an anthem for that summer!

Hi Ken! I think I first heard 'Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie' in 1988 or 1989, and loved it right away! It is strange that they didn't have more success than they did. Ray does a fantastic job with the keyboards on 'Light My Fire', I agree. 'The Letter' is pretty short, I agree - it's probably not much over 2 minutes long, if that! I didn't know about the connection to Big Star - that's interesting! I'm not too familiar with them, but I've heard one or two of their songs, and should investigate further one of these days.
