Hey Dawn! Mixed bag today.
10. Smoke from a Distant Fire - Always loved this song. I dont know much at all about Sanford/Townsend. I'm not sure if they did anything else. If they didn't, they should have.
9. Telephone Line - My fave by ELO, and my fave on today's chart. It seemed to combine '70s music with an undertone of '50s doo wop.
8. Strawberry Letter 23 - Barely remember this. I actually remember the Johnsons better from ten years earlier with a version of I'm a Man
7. Easy - One of my faves by them. A nice "Easy" (;D) ballad
6. Don't Stop - Fine song. One of only 73 hit singles from Rumours
5. Float On - I really love R&B/soul ballads. Please tell me why I don't like this song. -- because I don't.
4. Handy Man - This cover is soooo different than the Jimmy Jones original, that it's a totally different song! Good song, too.
3. I Just Want to Be Your Everything - Very good song by Andy. This one seemed to stay on the charts forever.
2. (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher - OK cover, but I like Jackie's original a whole lot better, and I like other songs by Rita a whole lot better also.
1. Best of My Love - Note to The Emotions: Stop using title of great Eagles song for mediocre disco. ;D

Got just a few good ones (IMO, that is) today. 6. It's Fleetwood Mac. Does there have to be another reason why I like it? 3. Aw. Such a sweet song. It's so sad about him. 1. This one's cute. I enjoy it every now and then.

Not too bad!
One of my fave one hit wonders, plus my fave song by another artist. 10. Absolutely love this tune. Didn't really know it growing up, and then one of the classic rock stations here started to play it, and I was kindof surprised. The sound was different then the rest of the station. Great line-"Don't let the screen door hit you, on your way out!"
9. From one of the BEST albums of all time. But the album is SO great that this is one of my lesser faves on it.
8. Cool tune you don't hear much.
7. My fave by them-best thing Lionel ever touched.
6. Tired of this one, but it's the Mac.
5. Don't know it.
4. Nice cover.
3. I like Andy's hits, they're pretty good.
2. Great cover, I like it better than the original.
1. Decent, but there are better disco tunes.

10. Smoke from a Distant Fire - Sanford/Townsend Band Great tune! Seems to have been forgotten by most radio programmers. Needs a revival. In limbo unfortunately: too old for 80's retro and too new for standard "oldies" formats
9. Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra Same as above. Clever way of simulating a transatlantic call. Genius of Jeff Lynne evident here.
8. Strawberry Letter 23 - Brothers Johnson Psychedelic soul...very nice indeed. Lyrics are somewhat difficult to understand but perhaps that's intentional.
7. Easy - Commodores Yet another great one. 1977 was an outstanding year for music IMHO.
6. Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac Bah....always reminds me of the Clinton's inauguration. There were definitely better tracks off of "Rumors".
5. Float On - Floaters Ridiculous song. "Cancer...and my name is Larry". Chauvenistic, open-collared drivel.
4. Handy Man - James Taylor Nice, but not as good as the original.
3. I Just Want to Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb I like to sing along to this one and don't care if I look silly. It's a very good song. The brothers Gibb OWNED Top 40 radio from 75-79.
2. (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher - Rita Coolidge Nice bass line added to a classic Jackie Wilson tune. Rita shows she has good pipes with this well-executed vocal display. Also a fine keyboard solo.
1. Best of My Love - Emotions Good harmony. These ladies came from a Gospel background and it shows. Thought they'd have more success like The Pointer Sisters but alas they only charted once more with Earth, Wind and Fire on "Boogie Wonderland"...ugh!!!

10. A fine tune that I listened to just a couple of nights ago. Don't remember it at the time .I first became aware of it either through Dave's lists or Adam's' downloaded it and added to a CD compilation.
9.One of my all time favorite 70's albums .I remember saving up my allowance giving it to my Mom to but the LP and running home after school to listen to it LOL. Jeff has such a great ear for melody . I love it so much.
8.Don't know alot of tunes by them other than this one - good stuff.
7.Nice smooth harmonies on this one - one of their finest.
6.Bought the 45 at the time great shuffle
5.I have the song but I don't think i've ever listened to it d'oh!
4.Great version
3.I like it
2.What a voice! always loved her version
1.Great disco tune:)

Would have been my last year of complete freedom. Would have entered Kindergarten in '78. 10) It's ok. I always had a hard time understanding what they were saying. 9) Good song. Love ELO. 8) Love this one - I don't have it anywhere. Bummer. 7) I like Faith No More's version better. 6) Good song - just wish I wouldn't associate it with Bill Clinton 5) Don't know this one - its a bit redundant.... 4) YUK! 3) It's ok. 2) I don't like this version. 1) No thanks - weak disco.

Hi Dawn - kind of neutral on todays chart
10. Smoke From a Distance Fire - ok song, never really "warmed" to it.
9. Telephone Line - Actually didn't like this song when it first came out. The more I heard it, the better I liked. Classic ELO.
8. Strawberry Letter 23 - ?
7. Easy - Not bad
6. Don't Stop - I like this song, just not as well as some of the other songs of this album.
5. Float On - no thanks.
4. Handy Man - Love James Taylor
3. I Just Want to be Your Everything - no thanks
2. Higher & Higher - Love this version of this song.
1. Best of My Love - Good song by the Emotions.

I'm not too familiar with the Sanford/Townsend band either, and have always wondered why they didn't have any chart hits other than this one. I agree, they should have done more - they had a really good sound. I've always liked 'Telephone Line', but I've grown to love it even more in the past year or so. That doo-wop styling is really unique - love it! You're absolutely right about the two 'Handy Mans' being totally different! I've always preferred James' version - his vocals are especially good on it.

I enjoy it every now and then. I completely agree about Fleetwood Mac - their material is always great! Even after all these years, it's still hard for me to believe that Andy is gone. He was so young, and so talented.

'Smoke from a Distant Fire' does have kind of a unique sound - not exactly rock, but not quite pop either. I agree, that line is great. I've heard that expression used a few times, and I wonder if it started with this song. 'Strawberry Letter 23' is a big favorite of mine, but like you I don't hear it too often. I'm with you - Rita's cover is the better of the two 'Higher and Higher's, IMO.

You make a good point about 'Smoke from a Distant Fire' being in limbo. So many songs from the 1977-83 era seem to be forgotten by programmers these days. I was hoping that as time passed, oldies stations would start to play the songs, but unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be happening. 'Easy' is a great one from the Commodores. I'm with you about 1977 being a good year for music. I love the melody of 'Float On', but I agree that those lyrics are silly.

I had many of the tracks on an ELO box set, but after I read posts on YL by you and Adam recommending it, I picked up a copy on vinyl and hope to get the CD one of these days soon. Thanks to both of you for the recommendation - I love it! I'm not too familiar with the Brothers Johnson's material other than a few songs, but what I've heard is great. I remember the 45 of this came in a strawberry-scented picture sleeve! I thought that was so cool at the time!
