This was done back at YL . I really , really love the music of the 1970's but just like in the 50's , 60's, 80's and certaintly the 90's and today each decade had a few duds - and of course everybody has their own opinion to what is a good and bad song. My apologies to those who like these : 1.You're Having My Baby - Paul Anka - what was he thinking? 2.Torn Between Two Lovers - Mary MacGregor - "cringe" (I even have this on a CD comp ) 3.Feelings - Morris Albert 4.Funny Face - Donna Fargo

Good one Ken This is what I can think of off the top of my head: Afternoon Delight Feelings The Morning After One Tin Soldier Torn Between Two Lovers Bad Blood Having My Baby Gonna Let Her In Happy Days Theme You Light Up My Life Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast Fly Robin Fly I've Never Been To Me (originally released in 70's) Margaritaville (or any Jimmy Buffet song for that matter) That's all I can think of for now. There were lots and lots of good songs in the 70's, but I really can't stand those.

"Loving You" - Minnie Riperton "Go Away Little Girl"- Donny Osmond, what a good Mormon he is. "I've Never Been To Me"- Charlene...please make it stop! "Feelings"- Morris Albert...Wo, wo, wo, feelings! "Precious and Few"- Climax...too painful to think about. "You Light Up My Life"- Debby Boone...number one for a gazillion weeks? Why? "Kung Fu Fighting" - Carl Douglas.... just plain dumb. "Muskrat Love" - Captain & Tennille...I like Captain & Tennille...but this contains sounds too disgusting to reproduce with words. "Seasons in the Sun" - Terry Jacks...he also gets an award for awful hair. There is some kind of music video-like clip of him where you can witness the hair and the song at the same time. "Ben"- Michael Jackson...Before he took an unusual interest in chimps in the 80s...yes, before Bubbles, there was Ben. Jacko sang a love song to a rat. "Shannon"- Henry Gross...how depressing, a song about a dead dog. "Wildfire"- Michael Murphey...how depressing, a song about a dead horse, and its owner. "Disco Duck" - Rick Dees....how depressing, oh wait...no, it's not about a dead duck. I wonder if old Rick will ever live this one down? "Chick-A-Boom"- Dewy Dewdrops...words could not describe this insipid crap. "I Write The Songs"- Barry Manilow...I write the songs that make the whole world sing, I write the songs that annoy athompsen.

Great topic, Ken! I love 70s music, but these I don't care for at all: My Ding-a-ling - Chuck Berry This is probably my most hated song of all time. He was capable of so much better than this. Ma Belle Amie - Tee Set I've tried and tried to like this, but never quite succeeded. It annoys me when I hear it on the oldies stations. The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Robert John Another annoying song. I love 'Sad Eyes', but this wasn't nearly as good. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd I'm very tired of this one - it just goes on and on and on.... Spanish Harlem - Aretha Franklin I like most Aretha songs, but she missed it with this one.

Although I have a few repeats on my list of hates, I'm embarassed to admit that I like a few of the tunes that people have mentioned. Anyway... - Bad Blood -Sedaka
- You Light Up My Life - Boone
- Brand New Key - Melanie (I truly hate this one)
- The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack ( I never knew it was possible for a song to spontaneously put you into a coma - NEVER listen to this while driving!)
- Seasons In The Sun - Poor Terry Jacks and his tragic hair
- Thank God I'm A Country Boy - John Denver
- I Like Dreamin' - Kenny Nolan
- Make It With You - Bread (as I've said before, I go hot & cold with this band I either like their stuff or hate it with a passion)
- The Morning After - Maureen McGovern
- My Ding-A-Ling (I didn't remember that Berry did this in the 70s. This has got to be in the top 10 annoying songs of all time)

Of course, many of the above were done in my "disliked Songs" Hits Battles over a year ago. On the whole, there's just nothing from the 70's that make me wretch, but I've never much warmed up to these: The night they Drove ole Dixie down (The original Band version is MUCH better)-Joan Baez (and I like some of her others more as well)
The first time ever I saw your face-Roberta Flack (This is NO party song, unless there's been a break-up)
Americans-Byron MacGregor or Gordon Sinclair (This was released strictly to American patriotism around the Vietnam War, and could never be played today except for more patriotic moments like 9/11)
The last farewell-Roger Whittaker (Don't let my dad see this... ;D)
Run Joey run and Blind man in the bleachers-David Geddes (I almost always skip these in my "Nice Day" series, there's just too much down-trodden emotion)
My heart belongs to me-Barbra Streisand (Sorry, Lora. I couldn't quite understand its appeal--it's like NEVER played on ANY AM or FM lite station anymore!)
Always and forever-Heatwave (Disco-yay! Ballads-not what they should have done. Later example: Expose)
Don't cry out loud (and maybe Midnight blue, 1975)-Melissa Manchester (I have said before how much I LOVE 1979 music. This is the ONE top 40 exception.)

I was listening to one of Casey Kasem's old AT 40 shows recently, and it brought this thread to mind. Several people have mentioned hating Paul Anka's You're Having My Baby, and you can add my name to the ranks. When I was listening to it on a recent countdown, I was literally cringing just a few bars into the song. Awful, just awful - it almost gives the dreaded My Ding A-Ling a run for its money. I used not to dislike it so intensely, but I don't know - that's one of the songs that just gets worse and worse with age.

A friend of mine used to change one of the lines to "you could have flushed it down the toilet but you wouldn't do it." I can't hear the song without thinking of that line. And the funny part, is that line doesn't make the song any worse than it already is. On the other hand, I really liked Paul's followup, "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone."
