I was listening to one of Casey Kasem's old AT 40 shows recently, and it brought this thread to mind. Several people have mentioned hating Paul Anka's You're Having My Baby, and you can add my name to the ranks. When I was listening to it on a recent countdown, I was literally cringing just a few bars into the song. Awful, just awful - it almost gives the dreaded My Ding A-Ling a run for its money. I used not to dislike it so intensely, but I don't know - that's one of the songs that just gets worse and worse with age. I agree about Having My Baby. Terrible song. A friend of mine used to change one of the lines to "you could have flushed it down the toilet but you wouldn't do it." I can't hear the song without thinking of that line. And the funny part, is that line doesn't make the song any worse than it already is. On the other hand, I really liked Paul's followup, "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone." Now technically speaking, wouldn't I Don't Like to Sleep Alone come before You're Having My Baby ?

Good one, Ken. I guess that's why music is an art rather than a science.

The 70's were my favorite decade overall for music but there were definitely some stinkers...I particularly dislike:
Muskrat Love - Captain & Tennille Billy Don't Be a Hero - Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat - The DeFranco Family Da Doo Run Run - Shaun Cassidy Midnight At the Oasis - Maria Muldaur Angie Baby - Helen Reddy Get Dancin' - Disco Tex & the Sex-o-lettes Never Been To Spain - Three Dog Night Feelings - Morris Albert (That's the time I) Feel Like Making Love - Roberta Flack Loving You - Minnie Ripperton Ben - Michael Jackson any novelty "song" by Dickie Goodman (Mr. Jaws, etc.)

Here's another one I forgot to mention - Think's Once You Understand. Why, oh why was this ever released? Bizarre even for the time, and hearing "Things get a little easier once you understand" over and over gets old quick.

I guess that during a time when parent/child relationships were stressed, the producers/writers were trying to help, but as they say, "Hell was paved with good intentions"........

Show's you how different people's tastes are-I really like Bad Blood and Afternoon Delight a lot! And those are the two that seemed to creep into people's lists here the most!
I also don't mind America's take on Muskrat Love.

"Loving You" - Minnie Riperton "Go Away Little Girl"- Donny Osmond, what a good Mormon he is. "I've Never Been To Me"- Charlene...please make it stop! "Feelings"- Morris Albert...Wo, wo, wo, feelings! "Precious and Few"- Climax...too painful to think about. "You Light Up My Life"- Debby Boone...number one for a gazillion weeks? Why? "Kung Fu Fighting" - Carl Douglas.... just plain dumb. "Muskrat Love" - Captain & Tennille...I like Captain & Tennille...but this contains sounds too disgusting to reproduce with words. "Seasons in the Sun" - Terry Jacks...he also gets an award for awful hair. There is some kind of music video-like clip of him where you can witness the hair and the song at the same time. A "two-fer"... Terry Jackswww.youtube.com/watch?v=pfm-17pu6SQ and... Nirvanawww.youtube.com/watch?v=kO4BF67pvsc "Ben"- Michael Jackson...Before he took an unusual interest in chimps in the 80s...yes, before Bubbles, there was Ben. Jacko sang a love song to a rat. "Shannon"- Henry Gross...how depressing, a song about a dead dog. "Wildfire"- Michael Murphey...how depressing, a song about a dead horse, and its owner. "Disco Duck" - Rick Dees....how depressing, oh wait...no, it's not about a dead duck. I wonder if old Rick will ever live this one down? "Chick-A-Boom"- Dewy Dewdrops...words could not describe this insipid crap. "I Write The Songs"- Barry Manilow...I write the songs that make the whole world sing, I write the songs that annoy athompsen.

Dawn, I think I may have mentioned this before, but what the heck, I'll repeat myself I remember a buddy of mine finding a mint copy of that 45 back in '84 / '85. We both had no idea what the song was, we hoped that maybe it was going to be some great " lost" track from the 70's. Wow, were we ever wrong lol! When we arrived back at his place he played it. We were stunned lol and I remember thinking the very same thing you mentioned "who's idea was it to release this?" I can't believe any radio station would have played it ?

I still remember hearing Afternoon Delight one morning back when it was current while I was eating breakfast before school.

I thought "Once You Understand" was ok. However (and I know I've said this on some of the message boards, so forgive me if you've heard this all before), I used to think it was a commercial! Same thing with that Tom Clay "What the World Needs Now..." thing. I was surprised to find out these were actual RECORDS that people could buy!

Same thing with that Tom Clay "What the World Needs Now..." thing. I was surprised to find out these were actual RECORDS that people could buy! My belief is that those two records were intended as such, but (for some reason I still can't figure out) became big hits when released as singles. If you look at the weekly charts from major radio stations back then (and you can easily find them online), you'll find that the Tom Clay record in particular was totally ignored when it peaked nationally in August of '71. How can such a huge national hit be completely ignored on weekly surveys of major market stations (that could make or break a record)? My guess is that it was treated as a PSA. But if that's the case, how did Billboard chart it so high?
