"Shame, Shame" - The Magic Lanterns (1968)
Love was the game, fool was my name I thought you'd know wrong from right But you ran to his arms tonight
Shame, shame we had a good thing baby Shame, shame he doesn't love you, baby shame, shame he'll only break your heart and leave you standing out in the rain shame, shame
I was your clown, but he'd be around you call him up on your stage but he's acting out every page
Shame, shame we had a good thing baby Shame, shame he doesn't love you, baby shame, shame he'll only break your heart and leave you standing out in the rain shame, shame
I thought you'd know wrong from right but you ran to his arms tonight
Shame, shame we had a good thing baby Shame, shame he doesn't love you, baby shame, shame he'll only break your heart and leave you standing out in the rain shame, shame

I've known the song for years by title, but I don't think I've actually heard it.
If you look closely, that guy in the back that's almost completely hidden, it's Ozzy! I guess he won't admit to it being him.

I guess he won't admit to it being him. Not true. It's been an urban legend for years that Ozzy was in the Magic Lanterns, because there was a guy in the band who bore a slight resemblance to him whose name was Michael "Oz" Osborune. Not the same guy (not sure if they're related though). At the time this was a hit, Ozzy was working on Black Sabbath's debut.

But even if he was working on the Sabbath debut while this was a hit, couldn't he have been in the Lanterns back when it was recorded, which was earlier than the Sabbath work?

It's been an urban legend for years that Ozzy was in the Magic Lanterns, because there was a guy in the band who bore a slight resemblance to him whose name was Michael "Oz" Osborune. Not the same guy (not sure if they're related though). At the time this was a hit, Ozzy was working on Black Sabbath's debut. I had never heard the "Oz/Ozzy" story before, but just for grins I looked it up on allmusic, com. The "biography" page for the Magic Lanterns includes the following: "The group's lineup began a series of shifts that left Bilsbury as the sole original member, and brought Alistair "Bev" Beveridge (referred to in some sources as "Les" Beveridge) (vocals, guitar), Peter Garner (guitar, vocals), Mike "Oz" Osborne (bass, vocals) (who was definitely not Ozzy Osbourne, despite rumors to the contrary), and Harry Paul Ward (drums, vocals) aboard."Strangely enough. however, if you go to the album review for the album "Shame Shame" (the one whose cover Joe posted) also on allmusic.com, it says the following: "The main claim to fame of the Magic Lanterns , besides the hit single in 1969, of the song "Shame Shame," was the inclusion of later soon to be stars, Albert Hammond and Black Sabbath' lead vocalist Ozzy Osborne as band members. Over the course of the bands career between 1968-1971 the Magic Lanterns released three albums in their native U.K. with only one being released in North America on the Atlantic label. This 18 track collection contains highlights from all three albums including the hit "Shame Shame" from the album of the same name and the only album to contain Ozzy as a band member. Although Ozzy still denies he was part of this band, the informative liner notes and band photo offers proof that he cannot refute. "Obviously, allmusic.com has never compared the stories of their writers. What IS apparently true, however, was that Albert Hammond ("It Never Rains In Southern California") was a band member, but this was after Shame Shame.

To be honest, I don't even know if I have it on vinyl. I'll try to remember to look tonight. But if I did, I wouldn't sell it anyway - unless I have 2 copies (which is also possible but unlikely) - then I'd just give one to you.

I found this on a Black Sabbath FAQ site:
37. Is this record real -The Magic Lanterns /w Ozzy? 37. Is this record real -The Magic Lanterns /w Ozzy?
It's real but Ozzy Osbourne isn't on it and was never in the Magic Lanterns. The guy's name was MIKE OSBORNE. Also, he is from Warrington, not Birmingham, plus he plays the bass. Chris Welch mentions the Magic Lanterns in his book BLACK SABBATH, but Welch was mistaken about Ozzy being in that band. Interestingly this wasn't the only band with an Osbourne. There was another band with an Oz Osbourne bass player, Coven with albums called 'Witchcraft', 'Blood On The Snow', and 'Coven'. It was suggested by Pete Sarfas that this band was into witchcraft.

I think they did one of the versions of "One Tin Soldier" - not very Witchcrafty. - Maybe it's a different Coven.

It's not-and this is TOTALLY weird-I was just thinking about this band yesterday! The band is called Witchcraft Coven! I swear to God, my aunt once asked me to look for their original albums a few years back. Well, I had forgotten about it. But yesterday, I was looking up obscure and lesser heard groups, and I thought White Witch, White Wolf and then I tried to think of this one. I was at my aunt's last night and asked her, and she reminded me it was Witchcraft Coven! What are the odds........
