Thought I'd start this old feature from a few years ago up again, although in slightly modified form, as I originally listed five songs at a time instead of three. Who remembers these "lost" top 40 hits that time and radio have forgotten? 1. Sweet Lui-Louise - Ironhorse (Billboard #36) This was the only top 40 hit for this group formed by Randy Bachman after the breakup of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. It almost sounds like a cross between the BTO hits You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet and Hey You, and even includes the "stuttering" vocal effect that was so prominently used in You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. I wasn't able to find a clip of it, unfortunately. 2. Hot Summer Nights - Night (Billboard #18) Written by Walter Egan, this was the first of two singles released by Night, later known as Chris Thompson & Night. I remember this getting a lot of radio play in the late summer of '79. A sample can be heard here: www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7280387&BAB=M (Track 8) 3. This Night Won't Last Forever - Michael Johnson (Billboard #19) This was the last of three top 40 hits for the former Chad Mitchell Trio member, and like the first two, it's in a mellow pop/rock style that almost crosses over into country. Here's a clip: www.amazon.com/Very-Best-Michael-Johnson-Bluer/dp/B00000I71H/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-3254502-2807269?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1191531293&sr=8-2 (Track 3).

I actually do remember all three, albeit very vaguely in the case of "Sweet Lui-Louise." I also remember the follow-up to "Hot Summer Nights," "If You Remember Me"(but can't recall if it was credited to Night or just Chris Thompson.) I still hear "This Night Won't Last Forever" once in awhile on Music Choice's 70s channel.

Hey Dawn Great to see this return! 1. Sweet Lui-Louise - Ironhorse (Billboard #36) - I know of it, but I've never heard it. 2. Hot Summer Nights - Night (Billboard #18) - Yeah! I'm very familiar with this one, it sure takes me back. Although I never knew who sang it. Great tune! 3. This Night Won't Last Forever - Michael Johnson (Billboard #19) - I do recall hearing this, wow it's been a long time. Nice song.

I know I don't have the Ironhorse track, but have it on my want list. As for the Michael Johnson track, It's not particulary a fave of mine, but I don't think I've heard it in a long time. I might be thinking of something else.. I know I have it, though.
"Hot Summer Nights" is a song I remember well from '79, though not many others seem to know it. Didn't know it was on CD, I'll have to see if iTunes has it. (**UPDATE** WOO HOO!! They DO!!) I have a tinny-sounding Mp3 from Napster way back in the day..
But, Nightnoise?

Dawn, I've heard all 3 of those. I never cared for "Sweet Lui-Louise", as it sounds like a poor imitation of "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet". (I do like BTO, though.) The other 2 songs are great. Some country band--sorry, I don't remember which one--was it Sawyer Brown? did a remake of "This Night Won't Last Forever" that is even better than the original, IMHO.
Alan, I've heard OF the song you posted, but haven't heard it yet. I'm at work now, will check it out later. (I did click on the link just to see what song it is.)

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! Roxy Roller from Sweeney Todd - a Canadian band led by Nick Gilder who may be better known for "Hot Child in the City". Bizarre that this was covered by Suzi Quattro, although Gilder was in LA working with producers Peter Coleman and Mike Chapman who worked with Quattro, Pat Benatar and many others.

...Gilder was in LA working with producers Peter Coleman and Mike Chapman who worked with Quattro, Pat Benatar and many others. I guess that explains why Gilder sounds like a male Benatar.

After Nick Gilder left Sweeney Todd, Bryan Adams replaced him (then known as Bryan Guy Adams). Apparently there is a version of Roxy Roller with Bryan's vocal, but I've never heard it.

Hi Ken, I have an mp3 of the version with Bryan Adams. It's very similar to the one with Nick Gilder's vocal.

Well, you certainly learn something new every day. I don't think I remember Bryan Adams having stepped in to Sweeney Todd (or if I did I had forgotten).

Sweet Lui-Louise - Ironhorse I'm drawing a blank (can't click the link here at work). However, I now have Brother Louie by The Stories stuck in my head.
Hot Summer Nights - Knight Walter Egan of Steely Dan penned a disco song? I never knew that. I remember this one well...not too bad.
This Night Won't Last Forever - Michael Johnson I was listening to a Satelite Radio replay of American Top 40 from 1979 a few months ago and heard this song...I had completely forgotten about it. It's allright, I guess.
