It was fun revisiting Ken's thread about '70s songs we dislike, so I thought I'd start a companion thread about '80s stinkers. ;D Here's some of my candidates for the hall of shame (just my opinion; no offense meant to anyone who might like these): Lean On Me - Club Nouveau Ed, I think you share my strong dislike for this one. A pale comparison to the original, and that "we be jammin'" part is positively annoying. I Wanna Be Your Man - Roger I hated this when it came out. Then I went through a period where it was tolerable, although not great, and now I dislike it again. Something about that falsetto in his voice - yikes! Batdance - Prince I never quite understood why this was so popular. Prince is talented, but this was not one of his better efforts. Kiss - Prince Hate to pick on Prince again, but this is another one that falls short of his best material. He was trying to sound trendy, I guess, but it just didn't work. Groovy Kind of Love - Phil Collins A poor cover of the original. It might have worked better had he sped it up some, but it just seems to drag on and on. I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love - Chicago I'm a huge Chicago fan, but after 17, some of what had made them so great before had been lost. I'm not a big fan of any of their late '80s ballads, but this one was the worst. Very generic sounding and bland. Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth Ack! Too repetitive and annoying. What are some of the songs from the '80s that send you running for the mute button?

In the same vein (the one I feel like opening when I hear this song) is Red Red Wine by UB40. They turned it into a reggae song. It's not! It's a country-oriented ballad written and originally sung by Neil Diamond. It's a great song; in my top 500. The funny thing is, recently I heard a live version of Neil singing it in reggae style, I don't know if Neil's live version predated UB40's or not. I do know that I hated Neil's reggae version also.

Hey Dawn Club Noveau ("We Be Jammin" - ugh!) and both Prince tracks are also on my list of 80's songs I don't like. Venus - Bananarama I didn't mind Cruel Summer - it was kind of catchy, but this was just wrong. Back in the day a buddy of mine use to torture me by playing the video when we were hangin' out at his house. Pump Up The Jam - Technotronic The minute I heard this I knew that things had changed and music had hit rock bottom. Just terrible on all levels. Walk This Way - Aerosmith w/ Run DMC No ! No ! No ! I still don't understand how this became a huge hit? why? I just don't get it. Wake Me Up Before You Go - Go - Wham I'll never forget seeing the video for the first time, it just made me "cringe" - it hasn't aged well at all. Big Love - Fleetwood Mac I love (no pun intended ;D ) Fleetwood Mac - but they (well I guess all the blame falls on Lindsey since he wrote it) really dropped the ball.Whenever I listen to the Greatest Hits CD (green cover) I always skip over this.

There were a lot more songs in the 80's that I didn't like than the 70's. Of course, I stopped following in '85.
The songs I hate the most from the 80's:
Everybody Have Fun Tonight!! (although I did like the follow-up, "Let's Go!")
Also,
Come On Eileen Mickey We Are The World Just about any 80's cover of a 60's song

Van Halen's "Jump" (I know it may sound sacriligious, but that song and that video terrified me...I'd run to the TV/radio and scream at it until someone turned it off!)
Pass The Dutchie/Musical Youth (What the f@#$'s a Dutchie?)
I Can't Wait/Nu Shooz (I was okay with the song until the instrumental chorus with that high pitched sound...it kind of sounded like a cat being strangled in pure melodic tuning)
Come On Eileen/Dexy's Midnight Runners (OVERPLAYED, OVERPLAYED, OVERPLAYED!!!)

Actually, I love Kiss and Pass The Dutchie, but I think that goes to my time at the roller rink.
To name a few that I can't stand:
I've Never Been To Me - actually from the 70's but made popular in the 80's - it just makes me want to vomit
I'm In The Mood For A Melody - it's so monotone and it just puts me to sleep
Sea Of Love - I love big full lush music, but it's just too much
Pac Man Fever - um, no
Curly Shuffle- same
Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - NOOOOOO
Anything by Janet Jackson
Like A Virgin/Papa Don't Preach - I'm not a prude, but I just didn't care for the subject matter - she was just trying to push things
For that matter, you can add La Isla Bonita, Open Your Heart, Like A Prayer, and Lucky Star - SO OVERPLAYED!
Purple Rain - it was overplayed and too long
Smooth Criminal - I stopped liking him after "Off The Wall", but this song is just incredibly annoying with the "Annie are you ok" bit
Arthur's Song/Think Of Laura - perhaps it was the popular culture tie-in's - I like Christopher Cross, but these two seemed kind of schmaltzy
Puttin' On The Ritz - it was just unnecessary
New Sensation - the rest of that album had an edge, and this song just didn't have the same vibe
Anything by Guns 'N Roses - sorry, but his voice just drives me up the wall
On The Road Again/To All The Girls I've Loved Before/Always On My Mind - these songs were ALWAYS on the radio here - maybe the radio station was getting kickbacks from Willie
I love the 80's, but like any other time, it had it's share of duds.

Well Dawn,
....I'm glad to see everybodies 80s song's that they dont like. As for me, I have a verrrrrrry few song traxx's from the 80's that dont make my cut!
Okay, let's start the list:
Pac Man Fever---Buckner & Garcia in 1982 (Arcade games were big in the 80's, but this song is delirious!)
Back On The Chain Gang---The Pretenders in 1983 (Listen to the lyrics & you feel like your in prison now!)
Talk Dirty To Me---Poison in 1987 (Nah, this band sucks in my opinion!)
Hysteria---Def Leppard in 1988 (Oh NOOOOOO, I'm not a fan of this singer!)
Where Do Broken Hearts Go---Whitney Houston in 1988 (Yikes!!! Hey Whitney, looks like your singing career has taken a fall!)

I just couldn't stand "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". And when it was a current song, I used to absolutely HATE "Walk Like An Egypitian". Now I can take or leave it. And I agree on the Phil Collins Groovy Kind Of Love. I had to play that in my radio days, and would always turn the monitors down as much as I dared when it was on.

I agree Daniel - I'm a big fan of The Bangles, but Walk Like an a Egyptian is a terrible record.

Topping my list, though it was recorded in the 70's it didn't chart in the US until '82 is my all time most hated song:
I've Never Been To Me - Charlene There are not enough words to describe how bad I feel this song is. Let's just say I'd rather suffer through an 18-hour dental procedure than ever have to listen to the spoken-word affirmations near the end again. Makes Vanilla Ice seem Grammy-worthy.
Also:
It Might Be You - Stephen Bishop Rosanna - Toto For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead The Clapping Song - Pia Zadora Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car - Billy Ocean Glory Of Love - Peter Cetera New Attitude - Patti LaBelle Heartbeat - Don Johnson The Way He Makes Me Feel - Barbra Streisand Elvira - Oak Ridge Boys Bobbie Sue - Oak Ridge Boys I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi Yah Mo Be There - Michael McDonald & James Ingram I'll Be Loving You Forever - New Kids On the Block Girl I'm Gonna Miss You - Milli Vanilli Mexican Radio - Wall Of Voodoo Cherish - Madonna Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard Obscene Phone Caller - Rockwell (if you remember it, you'll know it really stunk!)

Obscene Phone Caller - Rockwell (if you remember it, you'll know it really stunk!) Well, no, actually I liked that one. As for "I've Never Been to Me", my first impression was that this woman was bragging about all her sexual conquests. Later I figured out that she was regretting the fact that she never settled down. Still sounds more like she's bragging rather than complaining, though! The song does have a nice melody even tho' the lyrics (and yes, the spoken part too) are a bit annoying.

Add me to the list of people who can't stand Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. Every year I always hope that I can manage to get through the holidays without hearing that song, but inevitably some store PA will play it. Arrrggh!
