I can't remember where I came across this one... I think I found the album at the Goodwill and recognized the title from browsing through my Whitburn singles book. (I often do that, buy an album/single because I saw it listed in there. Albums are usually only a buck at the thrift shop so it's no big loss if it turns out to be crap) Anyhow, I gave it a listen and ended up liking it. I haven't come across the album on CD in my secondhand shop wanderings, but have it on my hard drive recorded from the LP. (It was a #7 track on the pop chart, BTW) Sample can be found here: www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,166788,00.html

I've done that myself a number of times with buying music by title. More times than not, I've discovered some really great tracks that way.
I remember You're Only Lonely well from '79. It was a favorite of my mom's at the time, and I recall her playing the 45 often. J.D. is underrated as a singer; he has a great voice, very similar in tone and range to Roy Orbison's.

I share your enthusiasm for thrift stores--I LOVE THEM!!!!! Anyway, I have a compilation CD with "You're Only Lonely" on it as well as some other good songs from the '70s. And guess where I bought it? A thrift store.

I love thrift stores as well! I know Only The Lonely very well. I included it on mix CD I made about four years ago. Great track!

SOUTHER, who co-wrote a couple of EAGLES hits, made the singles charts two other times...once with JAMES TAYLOR in a duet called HER TOWN TOO and once with the short-lived supergroup THE SOUTHER/HILLMAN/FURAY BAND and their country rock hit FALLIN' IN LOVE (not to be confused with the HAMILTON JOE FRANK & REYNOLDS hit)...the SHF BAND featured CHRIS HILLMAN of THE BYRDS, FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, and DESERT ROSE BAND, and RICHIE FURAY of BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD and POCO.

I am also a huge fan of thrift shops, flea markets and yard sales. They, together with juke box stores were the major sources of my large 45 collection.
I have You're Only Lonely on a 45. I couldn't really remember the song. 1979 was a very busy year for us, New job, one year old baby took priorities. I just now played the song and remembered.. Oh yeah, good song. Just haven't heard it too many times.
Of course I do know JD Souther as a prolific writer for the Eagles and others, and am familiar with Her Town Too.
Dawn, I can see some definite similarities in style and range between JD and Roy, but IMO, JD's voice doesn't come close to the power of Roys. In fact, I'd probably compare JD more with Del Shannon.

But IMO, it was the fact that Roy DIDN'T have to resort to falsetto was one of the things about his range that made him great. There are, I believe some strong similariities between Roy's "You Got It" and the song that Del reportedly used as a try-out for The Wilbury's and that also supposedly featured the remaining Wilburys as backup -- "Walk Away" I am very familiar with A Black and White Night, I have the video and the long version of the CD. My only problem with the concert was the fact that Roy never taught Bruce that it's "Sweet DREAM Baby" not "Sweet DREAMS, Baby." ;D Roy still remains my #1 favorite recording artist of all time.

How fun! I have quite a few CD's from John Mayer and Van Morrison, and one from Stone Temple Pilots as well. I love getting great deals on CD's. I've found a lot of good used stuff on amazon.com also. I just got Gene Pitney's "Anthology 1961-1968"--$3.95, plus shipping & handling, and lots of great songs there! They have tons of good stuff on Amazon--I could go nuts there buying stuff. I did a LOT of my Christmas shopping for the family on Amazon last year (new stuff, of course). You know what else I love to buy at thrift stores and yard sales? Books! Have you seen how expensive new books are? But often you can buy 'em for less than a buck at a thrift store or yard sale. And Legos for my son--I also used to get him the large Mega Bloks when he was younger. Going back to the original topic of this thread: Dave, if you want to look up my original message about the compilation CD I got with that J.D. Souther song on it, I think the subject line is something like "Look what is on this CD". It also has Chi Coltrane's "Thunder and Lightning" and Toto's "I'll Supply the Love", among others. The CD was about $2 and it hadn't even been opened when I got it. It was apparently a freebie from a laxative company (they were kidding me about that on this board when I posted it), so the CD was free for somebody once, but I had to pay for it. Oh well, the CD was cheap, and I have put it to VERY frequent use! "Feel Good" is the CD title, btw.

DEL's version squeaked into the TOP 40. ROBERT PLANT/THE HONEYDRIPPERS' cover is the better remembered remake today. www.jukeboxdave.com
