This movie was a nice little story about a hypothetical late 50s-early 60s group that got "made" and then killed by the music industry after one hit. Not a bad rather light movie.
What I thought was the cleverest thing that the script/music writers did was the music that they surrounded the "Wonders" with. It is only seen in bits in the movie, but becomes clear in the soundtrack. They invented a whole slew of fictitious singers, groups, bands, etc. and made each one represent a different genre of music that was popular at the time. There's a black girl-group ala the Supremes, a Connie Francis-like singer, a Ventures-like instrumental group, a Beach Boys-like "car" group, and a Bobby Darin-type nightclub singer. They each do a fake entire song on the soundtrack. I found the whole thing brilliantly done.
Anyone else seen the movie and heard the soundtrack?
Opinions?

Great topic, H2! I've seen the movie several times, and also have the soundtrack. I agree with you, it's really interesting to see how the different genres of music of the 60's are represented there. Even though the songs were recorded in the 90's, they do have an authentic 60's feel that really lends credibility to the storyline. My favorite songs on the soundtrack are the title cut and 'Mr. Downtown'.

But my favorite"other" group/song is the Chantrellines singing "Hold My Hand, Hold My Heart". -- It's pure Motown. But you know, Dawn, in a way it pi$$es me off that all those songs were just throwaways. If you don't listen to the soundtrack, you don't know what was there. The movie doesn't give it to you.

You're absolutely right, H2 - I couldn't agree with you more. There are some real gems there, but unfortunately a number of them did tend to be somewhat glossed over in the movie.

Yeah! Great movie that I watch every chance I get . Love the soundtrack as well - bought it the day after seeing the movie at the theatre . I thought it was also very cool how they covered every genre of early - mid 60's music . Tom Hanks did a great job:)

I have seen this movie at least five times, and will still check it out if it is shown on TV. I loved the whole storyline, and the music was great as well.
The entire "Playtone" tour of artists was really spot on - and a lot of those songs were terrific! I must pick up the soundtrack some time - loved the title song, "Hold my Hand, Hold my Heart" and "Mr. Downtown". I used to work for an accountant who moonlighted as a singer, and I could just picture him singing "Mr. Downtown". Last I heard, this guy is doing Tom Jones impersonations. Yikes!!!

This is a movie every 60's music fan should like. All my co-workers (who were more into 80's to today) HATED it! "Worst Tom Hanks movie ever". BAH! Hope to get the DVD sometime, after having the VHS since 1997. Superiorly done, even better than "Apollo 13" or "Big". However, "Forrest Gump" is Tom's shining moment for eternity.

This is one of my favorite movies. And the best part is that it's about my current residence... Erie, PA! Tom Hanks visited the city once, and I think it was during "Octoberfest," and he liked it so much that he wanted to make a movie about it! I have the DVD and the CD soundtrack. I also like the song "Lovin' You Lots And Lots."
