I loved this movie. I bought the extended DVD of this a couple of months ago and it's now one of my favorite DVD's. I loved the director's commentary.
I've always liked Cameron Crowe and his style of writing. If there's a type of person I admire, it's directors who write for themselves. The soundtrack has some great songs from the late 60's early 70s'. From the very first moment when William's sister plays "America" by Simon and Garfunkel...the movie is filled with nostalgic and wonderful music.
I just have to go into my favorite scene in the movie. The bus scene. When William and Russell get on the bus after Russell and the band had a fight. As they drive off "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John begins to play. And without saying anything the differences are resolved simply by singing along to "Tiny Dancer". I get goose bumps even thinking about it.

I loved this movie too. I've seen it three times now on DVD. The lead character reminds me a lot of myself when I was his age.
Kate Hudson and Jason Lee were both very good in this film as well. The soundtrack brought back a lot of childhood memories. Plus, it is a very funny movie too. I highly recommend it.

I've been wanting to see this movie, simply because there is a Beach Boys Pet Sounds reference in it. Also, "Feel Flows", a later Beach Boys obscurity, appears on the soundtrack! Maybe I'll get the DVD!
