Posting has been a little weak lately, hasn't it? Hope you guys get around to this!
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
Directed By: Rob Reiner Screenplay By: Christopher Guest Produced By: Karen Murphy and Lindsay Doran
Starring: David St. Hubbins...Michael McKean Nigel Tufnel...Christopher Guest Derek Smalls...Harry Shearer Marty DiBergi...Rob Reiner
Synopsis: See below.
My Comments: I haven't actually seen this movie, so I'll let someone else give a summary for me so I don't mess anything up. I've heard so many great things about this movie, and I don't really want to own it, but I can't find it around here anywhere just to rent. Grr...

Tap is a mock documentary by mock-documentarian Marty DeBergi (Rob Reiner) about the fictional mediorce rock band "Spinal Tap". The band is composed of lead singer and rhythm guitarist David St. Hubbins (Michael Mckean), the temperamental and sensitive lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), the quiet yet stoic bass player Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and a rotating slot of drummers, all of whom sadly don't last that long. These three actors make the film (with the help of some great supporting actors) in no small part because they also wrote the brilliant screenplay.
The movie draws on every single rock cliche known to man and skewers it. For instance, Spinal Tap doesn't have a permanent drummer. Like Led Zeppelin, the Who, and any number of bands, their drummers die in freak accidents. One dies in a gardening accident. Another dies by choking on vomit. Not his own, mind you. They never figured out whose it was because, of course, you can't dust for vomit...lol!
To me, what makes this movie funny are the songs They are all parodies of heavy metal's penchant for primitive double entendres (hello AC/DC?). The most astounding thing to me is that they were written and performed by the actors themselves. "Big Bottom" is my favorite!
If you're a fan of this movie, I highly recommend the DVD. The best feature is the audio commentary by Nigel, David and Derek. Notice I said the characters’—not the actors’—names. More than 25 years after the release of DiBergi’s documentary, the Tap lads have a chance to comment on “DiBergowitz’ exploitation” of them., And it almost funnier than the movie itself.

Thanks for the synopsis, Andrea! That was great! We just got a new Blockbuster Video here, so maybe they'll have this movie so I can FINALLY see it!

Great movie! My cousin's and I rented it when it was first released on video. Then I bought a used VHS copy about 12 years ago when a local video store was moving.
Love the many cameo apperances from David Letterman bandleader - Paul Shaffer to Ed Begley Jr playing one of their many drummers and Avengers TV star Patrick Macnee just to name a few.

I'm aware that Fran Drescher also made a brief appearance.
