I thought this would be a good section to put this in. Most of the albums they had, I already had. And although cheap (25 cents for LP or 45), I was on a very limited budget. I DID want to get some original Sesame Street album, like from 1970. I kinda wished I had. Anyway, I ended up picking up two Beach Boys albums. One is Beach Boys Love You. The main reason I wanted this was because I have always been curious about the song called Johnny Carson! LOL! In the 70s, many of the Beach Boys albums were repackaged and reissues. Many as two-fers with new covers. I found one from that series, but it wasn't any one albums. MOST of the cuts were from Sufrin' USA, but there were a few different cuts. Maybe Pete is familiar with this one?? They also had 15 Big Ones by the Beach Boys, which I saw first and was tempted to get because another song I was always curious about was Suzie Cincinnatti. But that record was beat up. So were copies of It's a Beautiful Day, the Cryan' Shames Sugar and Spice and an original copy of the White Album (only 1 record, no inserts). Oh, and for the record, I also got Skylar two books, and myself an Encyclopedia Brown book and 4 books from the "MASH goes to...." series.

Ok--I know this post was mainly about the Beach Boys albums, but I'm psyched about the Encyclopedia Brown book! LOL! I loved those books when I was a kid. I used to read all of 'em I could get my hands on.
And, just cuz I'm uninformed: What are the "MASH goes to" books?

I have 2 from when I was a kid, and then I got two when I was in my late teens, when I saw the story selling them again. I NEVER solved one myself. LOL!! I wasn't sure if anyone knew what those were. After the success of the movie and then the TV show, the writer of the movie teamed up with other writers and did books like MASH Goes to Paris and MASH Goes to Miami. I have never read one, and I cannot imagine how an entire staff of army doctors goes to these places, but for 50 cents each, I wasn't asking questions! LOL!

I haven't heard very much of their 70's material, but what I've heard, I like. Let me know how it is! Also, like Kathy, I think the Encyclopedia Brown book is cool! I have a couple of those. And hang on to those MASH books. They're very collectible!

AAHHH, Beach Boys Love You, what a great album! The TRUE test of how much of Brian's "weirdness" a Beach Boys fan can stand. This album goes beyond "Smiley Smile" as the STRANGEST album they ever did...
For a brief time in the mid 70's, the Beach Boys hyped a "Brian is Back" campaign, due to Brian's progress with Dr. Eugene Landy. In order to get Brian back into songwriting, Landy made him write at least one song per day, about "anything that happened to be on his mind at the time". According to Brian in his autobiography, there are BOXES full of tapes of these horrible songs, with titles such as "Quit Using My Toothbrush" and "Tell Carnie To Stop Eating Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches".
A lot of the songs on "Love You" were written during this period. "Johnny Carson" was written to calm Brian's fear of appearing on the Tonight Show. "Ding Dang" was written during an overnight drug binge at Roger McGuinn's house.
Many fans threw the album in the trash after about 4 songs, unfortunately missing out on gems such as "The Night Was So Young" and "Let's Put Our Hearts Together". But the general consensus was "Brian is BACK? THIS is "BACK"??"
Some of the lyrics on the album are silly, some downright absurd, but this WAS EXACTLY what was going through Brian's demented mind in 1977, in fact, this album is THE MOST direct insight into what was going on in Brian's mind EVER..
So do I like the album? YES!!! Absurd lyrics, cheesy synths and drum machine and all, this album is GREAT!!!
As for the double album, There were SO many reissues of those songs in the 70's it's hard to say..

BTW- There is a hilarious bootleg, which I have, of Brian demo-ing "Love You" songs for the rest of the band. When he plays them "I'll Bet He's Nice", you can almost HEAR the jaws drop! In the background one of them says "Who's writing is THIS?". Then when he gets to the mid section, you can hear "OH... MY... GODDDDD!!" in the background. Classic moment...

Like I said, I wish I grabbed 15 Big Ones too, but that would probably do too much damage to my needle! Now when you say stranger, do you mean stranger than Smiley Smile that came out, or the original Smile? Carnie didn't listen to Brian apparently! OOO!!! Hey, she's doing ok now! I'll Bet He's Nice is a good tune! The other album was actually just a single record, but I know what you mean.

Now when you say stranger, do you mean stranger than Smiley Smile that came out, or the original Smile? No, Smiley Smile. Many people raised their eyebrows after hearing that album for the first time. When Love You came out, most of the Smile stuff was still thought to have been destroyed.

So were they impressed or thinking he was crazy?? I don't think they knew what to think, personally. I do know that Landy at times tried to be a songwriter himself, but was known to write pretty bad stuff. They probably thought Landy wrote it. But I don't think they were impressed...
