Let's see if anyone sees a new post waaaay down at the bottom reaches of the MC Special Features boards.
I think a large number of Clicksters have sizeable 45 collections. I know I do -- about 5000 of the 7-inch, big holed, now antiquated vinyl.
So my question is: what among your 45 collection do you consider the most valuable either dollarwise or otherwise? Maybe a rare -or autographed- picture sleeve, maybe an original recording by Elvis on Sun Records that you bought at a yard sale for 50 cents,... whatever.
I bought a good number of my 45s used, including some at yard sales and flea markets. My single greatest bargain purchase was a 45 rpm copy of Led Zep's Stairway To Heaven. Now you probably know that it was never released to the public as a single, and that only DJ promotional copies exist in the 45 format. Record guides about ten years ago listed the value of this record at about $100-200 (I haven't looked recently to see what it's worth today). Anyway, I bought this for 25 cents at a neighborhood yard sale.
Second was a collection I bought from a friend of mine some 30 years ago. He was recently divorced, and was trying to unload some "clutter" including a modest collection of 45s (maybe 40 or 50 records). I think I gave him 5 or 10 dollars for the whole thing, that's all he wanted. It wasn't until years later that I realized the value of one of the records, an original recording of the Beach Boys song "Surfin' " on Candix records. It also goes for a couple hundred dollars.
There are others.... but I'd like to hear:
What's in YOUR collection??

Thanks for spicing up the boards, H2! I knew I could count on you!
Unfortunately, my answer will be pretty weak. I have been downsizing my 45's. Mostly getting rid of things like More Than a Feeling/Long Time on a reissue single (why have them both in such short edits??).
Let's see........My aunt's neighbor had a garage sale and I picked up a 45 of We're an American Band on gold vinyl.
I have the 45 of Delirious by Prince that, for whatever reason, I have seen valued at about $30.
My ex bought me the 45 of Happy X-mas by Lennon on green vinyl.
I don't know how valuable this is, just probably harder to find, but I got Custom Machine by Bruce & Terry from my in-laws collection.
Thing is, ALL these records are beat up! LOL! So they are probably worth half of less!
How do you find a DJ promo copy of Stairway at a garage sale?? You need to talk to Kathy! She always finds stuff like that! Kath, I hope you answer this post tonight!!

So was this the COMPLETE version of "Stairway to Heaven", or a (yuck) shortened version? I don't have any 45's right now (nothing to play 'em on). But I have picked up some CD's that were "promotional copies only" and were compilations from different record labels, with a bunch of different artists. In fact, I'm seriously considering reviewing one of these on Friday. (It says what albums the songs are from, so if I review it, I'll give that info also.)

It was the complete 7 minutes and whatever version. The only time I ever heard a shortened version was off an old 8-track that a friend of mine had. I guess they couldn't get the whole song on the 8-track version, so they cut out that whole instrumental part with those great guitar riffs.

I have a few thousand 45's as well, but most of them are top-40, which usually don't book very high. Most of them are singles I've picked up at flea markets and conventions for.25-$1.00 each. I like the labels, and the overall aesthetic of vintage vinyl. CD's are great, but there's just something about having the original record.
I have a couple of late 50's Elvis RCA 45's with the silver line going through the label, those tend to book high. Doo Wop singles tend to be the money records, but I don't have very many of those.
I have a few Beatle collectables. "Sie Liebt Dich" on Swan, and the green swirl "Kansas City/Boys" single from '65. Don't have the "My Bonnie" 45 on Decca, though (by Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers). That's a $50,000 45 if you can find it!
Very cool that you have an original copy of "Surfin'" on Candix! Do you still have it?

Do you still have it? Yeah, I still have the Candix record, Pete. (I'm anal-retentive; I don't throw anything out. ;D ) Actually, there are more valuable copies of Surfin' that were on the "X" Label. I don't have the My Bonnie 45 either, Pete. (Darn. Coulda used the $50K. ) The only copy I have of that song is a track on the MGM LP The Beatles with Tony Sheridan. I have a few of those silver line Elvis RCAs also, plus three hard covered Elvis extended play 45s. I think those have some value also. But, like you, most of my 45s are top 40 stuff.

I knew of the version on X, but I wasn't sure which came first. I sort of know the story of how the record started selling too much to meet the demand, and one of those labels was driven out of business because of it. Another Beatle-related thing I have is the ep of "4 by the Beatles" (just the record, no sleeve). It's so beat it's barely playable. Could probably get a lot of money if the record were in better condition and the sleve intact. Same thing goes for my copy of "4 by The Beach Boys", but at least it plays without skipping. I also have ep's by Buddy Holly on Coral and The Everly Brothers on Cadence. No sleeves, no idea what they're worth. I do know that ep's were common in the 50's, but they don't turn up too often today. A buddy of mine passed up a white label Elvis ep on RCA for a quarter about ten years ago. I guess it booked very high, and two of his friends (Elvis collectors) were P!SSED at him for letting it go! At the flea market I used to go to every Sunday, you had to get there EARLY before all the collectors would scoop up the good stuff. Some people would get there at 5 in the morning. I saw many a valuable record slip through my fingers, get bought by a dealer for a quarter who would turn around and try to sell it for book value..

Great topic H2 I have just over a thousand 45's from the 50's to the late 80's. I mentioned in my scrapbook page that the 45 collection really started to grow in the early 80's while I was in High school buying alot of them for between 50 cents to a dollar. A few gems I have The Apple promotional single of Only You by Ringo Starr - I paid a dollar and it apparently is worth $30 - $35 - it's in very nice shape. Oh Boy! - Buddy Holly on Brunswick - plays very nicely - I paid maybe a dollar for it . It's valued between $40 - $60 These next two I really don't know what their worth I've been unable to find any info. Dirty Water - Standells - UK promotional 45 on Capitol -I believe I paid $2 for it and bought it in the late 80's and Open My Eyes / Hello It's Me - The Nazz - New Zealand import (!) on Atlantic with the LP size hole . bought this also in the 80's and paid maybe $3 both are in nice shape. I have a few Beatles' picture Sleeves including A Hard Days Night - I think I paid $20 it's now worth $50 - $75 A quick story - a buddy of mine and I were at a record show in the 80's and I overheard a guy talking about Bob Dylan and that he was looking for a copy of Blowin' In The Wind. Well I knew my friend had a nice copy of it and told him about the Dylan collector well they ended up getting in touch and my buddy sold him the single for something like $150 at the time it's now worth - $250 - $350 . The collector asked my buddy what he originally paid and at first he didn't want to say LOL the guy said it's ok. So my buddy told him that he had bought it for a dollar.

I have probably 6 or 700 45's, and I can't really think of any that are very valuable. LOL! I do have a few Elvis EP's, but I don't think I ever looked them up to see if they were worth anything. Also have some Beatles 45's on the Vee Jay label. It's been a long time since I've even thought about those. Might have to take a gander at 'em again, and see if they're valuable.
I remember seeing an old 45 by Karen Carpenter for sale on Ebay a year or so ago. It was a demo she made when she was (I think) a teenager--or at least a young adult. If I remember correctly, it ended up selling for close to $5,000. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything that valuable in my collection. LOL!

Yeah I know about the Dylan version of Blowin' In The Wind being rare. I also had a chance to buy a copy of that for 25 cents from the guys who replentished the jukebox at my college student union in the early 60s. I didn't want it, though. I didn't like Dylan's voice on it, he didn't have the "hit" and I didn't care that he wrote it. I'm not sure about the value of your foreign records. I do remember some collector telling me that there wasn't much market for that over here -- but that was years ago, and things change.

Still quite a nice chunk of change for a 7" piece of plastic, though.
