Digging back through my previous selections, I also saw that I totally neglected Duran Duran! A very favorite of mine since the beginning, when I first heard "Planet Earth".
Pioneers of the lush and artsy music video, they never failed to disappoint me! For the longest time, I was the only person I knew to see the "night" (un-edited) version of Girls On Film. My Durannie pen-pal from England sent it to me around 1984. All nudity aside, I think it's one of the best videos I think I have ever seen, and it won a TON of awards.
As seems the case with a lot of bands I like, Duran was maligned over here as pop trash. They were hyped up, then shot back down.
I eagerly awaited their 1993 release, which went back to basics. It's a fabulous album, simply called "Duran Duran" (perhaps not coincidentally, the same title as their very first album), later dubbed "The Wedding Album" because of it's cover. It's an excellent album, and one I pretty much enjoy every track on. Most well known for "Undone" and "Ordinary World" - both excellent songs, the first song on the album was the one that blew me away, and is my favorite cut. Not one that was really played on the radio, and definately not seen or heard on MTV, it was a well deserved and long coming slap back to the system that had set them up, only to knock them back down. A hard driving song, with an excellent overall sound:
TOO MUCH INFORMATION
By: Duran Duran
Album: Duran Duran (1993)
Author: Duran Duran (album credits as group effort)
Destroyed by MTV I hate to bite the hand that feeds me so much information
The pressure's on the screen to sell you things that you don't need
It's too much information for me
Hey TV child look into my eyes here by intervention I want your attention
Promotion boy in a suit and tie he wants you to use it you're too shot to lose it
It's pumping down the cable like never so before
A cola manufacturer is sponsoring the war here comes the news with with love from me to you
Destroyed by ABC I hate to bite the hand that feeds me so much information
The pressure's on the screen to sell you things that you don't need
It's too much information for me
Turn on the tube hits you with a groove advertising music we want you to choose it
These teeth are white trainers ultra-bright this band is perfect just don't scratch the surface
We've covered all the angles the survey people say
Just put us on the cover we'd be smiling anyway this video was made with love for you
Destroyed by BBC I hate to bite the hand that feeds me so much information
The pressure's on the screen to sell you things that you don't need it's too much information for me
Destroyed by MTV I hate to bite the hand that feeds me so much information
The pressure's on the screen to sell you things that you don't need
It's too much information for me
Dialate your mind (repeat) Gotta give it to me gotta listen to me gotta give in to me now I'm on the line
Gotta give it to me gotta listen to me gotta give in to me now I'm on the line
I try (information) yes I try (too much information)
Why should I try (information) cause I try (too much information)
Gotta give it to me gotta listen to me gotta give it too me
My Opinion In A Nutshell: Music is just so over-commercialized anymore. Someone becomes popular by their own right (most often), then you have the merchandising (look at people like Britney Spears or NKOTB - the dolls, the bedsheets, the nightgowns, notebooks, mugs, etc. etc. etc.), then you have media saturation, possibly endorsement deals (again, Britney - who made me want to stop drinking Pepsi), then people get tired of you, and then you're tossed aside like yesterday's garbage. I was glad to see someone fighting back.
