We were listening to a Poco CD while we were up in New England last weekend, and this song came on. Listening to the lyrics in light of what has happened, it took on a whole new meaning. [Had a similar experience the first time I listened to Don Henley's New York Minute after 9/11].
"In The Heart of the Night"
In the heart of the night In the cool southern rain There's a full moon in sight Shinin' down on the Pontchartrain And the river she rises Just like she used to do She's so full of surprises She reminds me of you
refrain:
In the heart of the night In the heart of the night In the heart of the night Oh, down in New Orleans
There's a nightbird singing Right on through till the dawn And the streets are still ringing With people carrying on It's been so long waiting Just to be here again Anticipating All the time I could spend
refrain
And I trust in your love Never fallin' down And I trust in your love Just like I do in this town Oh, never fallin' down Oh, never fallin' down
In the heart of the night In the cool fallin' rain There's a full moon in sight Shinin' down on the Pontchartrain And the river she rises Just like she used to do She's so full of surprises (oh mama) She reminds me of you (right here)
refrain
And I'm so glad to be back in New Orleans Please don't wake me, don't shake me If it's only, if it's only just a dream Cause it's the only place that I can face It makes me feel so right Below that Dixie moon and lovin' you In the heart of the night

Man, I never even realized they mention New Orleans in the lyrics. And I too listened to this a lot over the weekend. I just musta blocked out all the New Orleans lyrics.
Very strange that you and I both have been listening to it. Especially me, who usually listens to The Forgotten Trail, not so much The Ultimate Collection.

This is a great song, my favorite from them. It's been a while since I've listened to it, though, and I had forgotten that they mentioned New Orleans in the song. The lyrics do seem very poignant in light of what has happened there the past few weeks.

I can very vividly recall hearing the song a lot in the summer 1979, when I just happened to visit New Orleans and drive over the Pontchartrain.

This is on my list of songs I like that nobody I know has heard of. Another one I discovered in my aircheck hobby.

This is on my list of songs I like that nobody I know has heard of. Another one I discovered in my aircheck hobby. It actually hit #20 back in '79, but I don't remember hearing it back then. Oh, and speaking of #20, Daniel, you are the 20th person to sign into our Homecoming Weekend Party. Welcome!

Thanks! Oddly enough, the aircheck I heard it on was from 1985! The station was at that time a low-rated top-40 format, and within a few months of that recording being made they would flip to Oldies and remain that way for 20 years.
