Nothing for today, so.....
April 11, 1956
Variety reports "Heartbreak Hotel" has sold one million copies, thus becoming Elvis' first gold record.
This had to be one of the first gold singles!

'Heartbreak Hotel' is one of my favorite early Elvis singles.

I don't really know for sure, and I guess the answer appears on several websites, but I don't think gold records were all that uncommon. I remember when I was just a little tyke, my mom often saying that she heard that so and so got a gold record for a million copies sold. I'm sure Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Perry Como, etc. must have had their share.
