September 23, 1969 - The "Paul McCartney is dead" rumor began circulating throughout the world when an Illinois newspaper reported clues from Beatles songs and album covers as "conclusive evidence" that Paul was dead. The clue that got the most attention was playing the "number nine" lyric from Revolution #9 on the White album backwards. Many people believed it sounded like John was reciting "turn me on dead man." Before the “Paul is dead” rumor was finally put to rest 2 months later, radio stations were finding new clues every day on the Sgt. Pepper album cover, in the lyrics of songs from albums dating back to Revolver and on Abbey Road. Someone noticed that Paul was the only Beatles walking across Abbey Road barefoot on the cover of the album. In the end, we discovered all it proved was Paul’s feet were dirtier than Ringo’s, George’s and John’s after they photographed the cover.

To me, this is one of the coolest things in rock history, just because it gets so indepth. So much so, there are entire books dedicated to the topic! I have one, The Walrus Was Paul. I find the whole topic fascinating, if not a bit ridiculous! LOL!

I was playing records backwards with the rest of them. I remember on Haloween night that year, WKBW (a 50,000 watter out of Buffalo that I could pick up in Bangor, Maine ) did a special feature on the Paul Is Dead rumors. Their conclusion was that it was all a hoax contrived by John Lennon. In their words: "Paul McCartney is alive and well. John Lennon is alive." LOL about Pauls dirty feet.

I remember back in the mid '80s, when I was first really getting into the Beatles, I was studying the LP jackets and the White Album poster to find all the the clues I'd read about. Definitely an interesting story!

I remember in the late 70's , my cousins and I studying the LP sleeves looking for all the clues . Like Adam I also find it sort of fascinating if somewhat ridiculous. I was browsing through some of my collection of Beatle magazines last night and found this - a 1978 reprint. ookworld.com/img/newsstand/paul_mcdead_repro78.jpg[/IMG]

I remember when we made our neighbors' sisters REALLY mad when in our attempt to "investigate" this story their brother kept playing the "incriminating evidence" over and over again for us. (Sometimes even by request! LOL!)
