Well (some of) you were clamoring for it, so here is it's return! (I just hope you all aren't partied out and will come back on tonight!
REO is one of those band's whose history sort of divides fans. Early fans who loved the early rockin' stuff, especially live versions of Ridin' the Storm Out, Keep Pushin', 157 Riverside Ave and Golden Country probably say that as early as You Can Tune a piano they were starting to "sell out".
Maybe some would give them a bit more "credit" and say they were ok until Hi Infidelity calling that fluff or pop. Yeah, it was poppier than their earlier stuff, but I still enjoy most of the album. (I'm sure early fans CRINGE at Keep on Lovin' You!)
I only know (and like) Keep the Fire Burnin' from Good Trouble, so I'll skip ahead to Wheels Are Turnin'. Yeah, this was even "liter" than the previous albums, but I didn't mind the biggies on here, in fact I really like Live Every Moment.
I guess I would say their last album with the "classic" lineup, Life as We Know it was where they were jumping. The songs were really campy and over the top. They were trying TOO hard to be cool at this point, right down to the picture of the band inside.
I actually don't mind one of the new songs off The Hits, I Don't Wanna Lose You, but Here With Me was an In My Dreams re-write, which was a Can't Fight This Feeling re-write, which was a Keep on Lovin' You re-write, which was a Time For Me to Fly re-write.....
And don't even MENTION The Earth, His Chicken, Their Shoes, Their Neighbors, etc to me!
So what do y'all think>

Unfortunately, I can't say much, because I really don't know much by them. I think Keep On Lovin' You is a great song, but I hated all the ballads that came after. To me, they just get lumped in with Survivor (I hope we don't do them... ). j/k

Hi Infidelity was my introduction to the band, and a huge fave during my teen years, although nowadays I tend to prefer the harder, earlier material a bit more. But it's undeniably a classic, and much of it still holds up well. Good Trouble had a couple of solid tracks, but didn't have the cohesiveness of Hi Infidelity, and Wheels Are Turnin' continued in that pattern. They pretty much lost me after that, and as you pointed out, seemed to be rehashing old sounds more and more. I'm not that familiar with the last couple of albums, but it sounds like I'm not missing anything!

Nice to see this return !
I like both their early 70's work and their early 80's breakthrough material. It's too bad the studio version of Ridin' The Storm Out doesn't recieve any exposure on radio - it kicks!
I lost touch with the band after the Wheels are Turnin' album (I bought the 45 of Can't Fight This Feeling. It seemed like they just simply disappeared. I would say that they "Jumped The Shark" after Wheels are Turnin'.

Which album had "Roll With The Changes" (my fave song by them actually)? I think it was the one before Hi Infedility? Anyway, I think it's hard to say when they jumped the shark. Like Journey, their sound was very different between the two decades. I don't think it's shark-jumping as much as it is line-up changes etc.

I can't really contribute to the discussion of when they jumped the shark. I've never owned any of their music, and really only remember their big hits in the mid-'80's.
But, I'm curious if anyone knows what they are up to these days? The reason I ask is that they are scheduled to perform at a country music concert (festival type of show) that I'm going to next month. I found it interesting that REO would be playing a country concert (?) Anyone know their country connection, or if they have new music that they are planning to market toward the country audience?
I should note that this annual country music concert has had other rock bands at it before...but usually those that have something they're marketing to country radio.

I can tell you-or just direct you to the Concert board where you'll read my experience earlier this summer! LOL! Ok, they are most definately still touring, with lead singer Kevin Cronin who, although not an ORIGINAL member, he was the only singer of their actual hits. Keyboardist Neal Doughty is still with them as well as bassist Bruce Hall who has been with them since 78 (their hit making years). But check out the Concert board anyway! And here I was all excited that you were answering this! LOL! Well, maybe one of the other ones! Also, there is a "Hat Trick" post way down near the bottom you could possibly answer!

I did post in the Martina hat trick post I just read your REO concert experience...sounds like a bit of a bust! I still wonder why they're playing a country concert. Although I know that Kevin Cronin was a friend of KZLA's morning show host. He had even done a solo performance at a previous KZLA charity concert. Could be as simple as that.
