The oldies station here did their annual voted top 500 songs.
The thing is, the list was gone from their site Tuesday morning! Not much time to look at it!
Some things I DID notice though-
Number one was Yesterday. Hey Jude was lower than I figured, somewhere in the 30's.
There was 2 Carpenters songs (somewhat surprised me) and We've Only Just Begun was WAY high, also in the 30s I believe.
There was only 3 songs from the 50s, and two were Elvis (All Shook Up & Hound Dog). The other was the Isley's Shout. No Buddy, Chuck, Richard, Everlys.....
On the other hand, here was PLENTY of 70s, up to and including Yvonne Eliman's If I Can't Have You. For guys like my uncle, that is bad.
Overall, there wasn't much Elvis at all. Of course Suspicious Minds and Burning Love were 2 of the others.
The Beatles weren't in the lower half at all. I didn't do a count, but I am guessing they were the most represented group.
Several Bread songs.
There was some other odd choices that I am forgetting.
I don't know, whattya think?

Well it's nice to see The Beatles well represented but a real shame that the 50's seems to have been all but forgotten.
With most oldie stations concentrating on the early 60's to mid 70's . My oldies station however when I've listened to it in the van (for some reason they don't have a very strong signal at times) still seems to play a pretty wide assortment.

Gaaaaaah! I hate that "If I Can't Have You" song. HATE! Well maybe it hates you too! That surprises me-since it's a Barry Gibb thing I thought you'd love it.

I truly believe Chicago has the worst radio stations! LOL! Sounds pretty bad from what you've said here... But I think our stations are worse.

Hey Adam,
I missed this post up until now. The only thing that makes the list at all acceptable is the fact that it was a VOTE. Assuming that the station didn't skew the results, that's what they had to go with. What surprises me is that the people who DID vote didn't give more weight to some of the important songs from the '50s. The question is WHY? -and the answer is easy: because the damn oldies stations don't PLAY songs from the '50s. In a few more years they won't play any songs from the '60s either.
But let's look a little deeper. I said: "Assuming that the station didn't skew the results" OK... we have 3 songs from the '50s. Are they seriously telling you that The Isley's Shout got MORE votes than say Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel and Don't Be Cruel ? That makes no sense. I'm betting that the voting, if they used it at all, was so screwed up that they had to doctor the results, and some guy who didn't know anything was asked to pick a couple of 50s songs.
I remember back when I was a grad student in Maine, living in Bangor, I knew a DJ from one of the local stations. Back in about 1970 or so, they did a top 100 or 200 or something of the rock era up to that time. They asked people to vote for their choices. When they did the countdown, nothing in the top 20 was from anything older than about 1965 -- except that number 18 was Twilight Time by The Platters. Well, I asked the DJ how that happened, and he said that it appeared that no one over the age of 15 appeared to have voted, and they wanted to have SOME representation from the '50s, so the station manager suggested they throw in Twilight Time. - even though it got no votes. Sounds like the same thing happened with "Shout" here.

Sounds like the same thing happened with "Shout" here. Hey Ed. I am thinking the the Shout thing is because so many people remember the scene from Animal House (although not the original version) and thus voted for it. Much like people still like Mony Mony because they hear it at weddings. Movies have a profound affect on people, especially the music, look at the Big Chill soundtrack. And people who dug Animal House so much in 78 are at the "oldies" age now. I don't think oldies will ever TOTALLY eliminate the 60s stuff, but it will just be MUCH later-thus no Satisfaction, Hard Days Night, Herman's Hermits, etc. Instead it will be lots of CCR and other stuff from 68-69.

But then a couple of years after that, those also will disappear and the earliest "oldies" will be disco, and so on and so on. The big question, and the one that none of us will be able to answer is: what happens one hundred or two hundred years from now? Today the "classical music" stations play Beethoven and Bach, etc. What will "The 20th Century Station" play in 2200?

That's why there is now a station on AM here that plays up to the British Invasion, since the oldies all but ditched that era. I am guessing eventually they will have to section off each oldies station. I've often joked that one day we'd hear, "Coming up, Elvis doing Return to Sender, Culture Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Hanson's MMBop and Eminem's Slim Shady!" Good God, help us.

The fact that there is a pre British Invasion station is actually encouraging. They are not TOTALLY forgetting that music. I agree. There'll probably be a whole bunch of different types of oldies stations, each with its own small but dedicated group of followers. As for your hypothetical station of the future, I'll probably shut it off after the first three songs.

(Not big on Frankie though) It's really the best way to do it. My 66 year old uncle doesn't get into Steely Dan & KC & the Sunshine Band. Wow, you are more open minded then me! No way I'd let it go to Hanson! Yikes!

I just had to re-read your post where you said: "Coming up, Elvis doing Return to Sender, Culture Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Hanson's MMBop and Eminem's Slim Shady!" I thought the first song was "Coming Up" - You know ..the Paul and Wings song! - as opposed to Coming up on our station we now have Elvis...etc. So, MY third song was Culture Club -- Definitely NOT Hanson !! LOL!!
