It seems lately I had a lot of ideas for topics that dealt with radio stations that didn't really fit any board. So I told Dawn and she created this board!
I already moved one topic from last week.
So I thought I'd kick it off with a general question.
The main station I listen to you've seen me mention tons of times-Timeless Rock. It differs from Classic Rock in that besides the typical stuff (Clapton, Beatles, Who, Seger, Tull, ELP) they also include lots of AM stuff (Bread, Grass Roots, Turtles), soul acts (Marvin, Temps, Stevie) and older acts (Roy, Righteous and even Elvis now!). Plus their rotation of harder stuff like Zep isn't as big as the other stations.
The next is the Rock station. NONE of those acts from the Timeless station are on here (other than some of the Classic rock stuff). They have been incorporating more 60s stuff (Doors, Stones, etc). But they LOVE Zep, Rush, AC/DC & VH, usually playing a cut an hour. Plus other 80s hard rock acts, and 90s stuff like Pearl Jam, STP, Lenny, Crowes.
Then I HAD a station that was from the far west suburbs that was even MORE rock than that station. No Boston, Journey, etc, more focus on Chili Peppers, Offspring, etc. One day I turned it on and Whitney or Cher was on! LOL! So I guess they are a Lite type station now!
Then there is a Classic Rock for the 'Burbs station. I call it "safe" classic rock. Dominated by late 70s and 80s. Very middle of the road classic rock by Petty, Mellencamp, Springsteen, even some surprises like Rick Springfield!
Then there is the Lite station which has been around forever. It has changed a bit though. I heard Pat Benatar the other day, and not We Belong Pat, but Hit Me With Your Best Shot Pat!
Then of course is the Country station, and as far as I know, it's one of the biggest in the country. My wife listens more than I do, and she says they never play two females in a row. There's the reason I don't listen.
So how about you?

There are two stations I listen to the most. One sounds similar to the Timeless Rock station you described, except that they don't play many of the more classic rock-oriented artists such as Clapton and Tull. The main period seems to be from about '62 up to '75, with an occasional late '70s song like Kiss You All Over thrown in. The other station is similar, but goes back into the '50s as well, and the focus is more on the top '60s artists like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis, Temptations, etc.
There are also three classic rock stations. Two of them play some '90s groups along with the older songs, and also seem to be getting more and more into newer groups like Nickelback, Saliva, and Three Doors Down. The third one (which is the station that did the Memorial Day countdown I told you about in PMs) has stuck primarily to pre-'86 songs, but they have a deeper playlist of older material than the other two. It's a neat station, but I can only pick it up in the car when I'm at least a few miles north of the city.
Also, there's a Music of Your Life station. I like to listen to it occasionally, as they play some great older music you don't often hear on other stations, like Glenn Miller, Patti Page, Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes, etc.
There are two classic country stations. One is relatively new, but the other has been around for years. Both of them have similar playlists - mainly '70s and early-to-mid '80s country and crossover. I rarely listen to the two contemporary country stations we have here, as with the one in your area, they don't seem to play many of the ladies.
Once in a great while I'll listen to one of the two A/C stations, but not very often.

There are I guess about 4 stations I listen to in my area they are
CFMI - Rock 101 - Classic Rock - They play the usual - Pink Floyd , Zep , Beatles , Rolling Stones , Steve Miller, Eagles , Seger - They seemed to have improved their playlist lately.
92.9 KISM - A classic rock station from Seattle - I was listening to this a couple of weeks back and they played Burn by Deep Purple which I never hear on the radio !! They play quite a good assortment.
Jack FM - This is a new station that's been around for about 2 years now - they changed call letters and formats - they were a soft rock station. but now play mostly 70's and 80's with a bit of Late 60's and current stuff thrown in. They were a real breath of fresh air here when they first started, playing 80's tunes I hadn't heard since they were current !
CISL - 650 - Oldies - They play quite a wide assortment ranging from the 50's to mid 70's - The Troggs , Beatles , Chuck Berry , Beach Boys , Johnny Rivers etc.

I really don't listen to the radio much anymore. But today at work, my little tape player busted and I can no longer close it--so it looks like for the next hour while I'm at work, I'll be surfing the radio dial. *makes mental note to bring other personal stereo from home*

Golly, I hardly even care to listen to the radio today. But I have so many great memories of stations in the past, primarily ones playing (then) current "top 40" music. After 1997, I pretty much ABRUPTLY stopped listening to top 40. Will hear oldies or lite music occasionally in the car, but never when I'm in my room or on the computer. That's when my CD's kick in. But to relate to the given subject, let's see... If Smitty ever gets back, she'll know all these sations, from good ol' Syracuse: Oldies 92 WSEN--The station I find myself listening to the most. They pretty much have to have one of the nation's widest variety of oldies--everything from Rock Around the Clock to the Beach Boys' Kokomo. Chicago from BOTH eras are well represented, also many of the GREAT 70's tunes are played like "Right back where we started from" and Pilot's "Magic", but all the commonplace oldies are there like Stand by Me and Unchained Melody. And it's also great to hear those obscure ones like "Baby take me in your arms" by Jefferson and "New York's a lonely town" by the Trade Winds. 93Q--Ugh. Have they gone downhill since the late 80's. They tend to stick to less rap, but are big on adult-friendly top 40 like Matchbox 20 and Evanescence. But in their golden age (after flipping from A/C in '83), they played a GREAT variety of top 40! Y94--LOVED them in 1983-1984 when they played a great variety of 60's and 70's hits, everything from the Carpenters and England Dan to oldies like Spiral Starecase and King Harvest. And they usually played FULL-LENGTH album versions!!! Had a GREAT oldies show going with Fred Horton 1983-85 and Bob Mitchell 1985-1994--they both played MANY rare gems like Conway Twitty's "Pick up", Eddie Rambeau's "Come closer", the Fireballs' "Long green", "She's got love" by Richard & Thomas Frost's "She's got love" (HANKERING for a CD)and Wallace Collection's "Daydream". Anyway Y94's format slipped when they started dropping the lesser-known oldies and the light artists, making it sound more top 40 by 1986. For a time, they even dropped 70's music from their format (60's was gone by 1989)! But today, they're a "mix" station from the 70's to today. 95X--Central NY's original rock station. Not my fave rock station, for they play a lot of the new crap. But Classic Rock's in there. TK99--entered the picture around '93, and I thought they were quite good! Nothing but the best classic rock! They will throw in some rare stuff from the 70's and 80's on weekends, but I haven't listened too closely as of late. Lite 105.9--Presently, my close-2nd fave station. Like Y94's early-years format in a big way. No nonsense, no loud mouthers, just good for relieving stress. Everything from Barbra to Gordon Lightfoot to Firefall to Genesis is on here, much like many of the tunes in my A/C tourney! (No pre-1960 straight pop except for Johnny Mathis, also)

I don't listen to the radio much except when I'm in my car, and then I find myself switching around the dial quite a bit. Let's see what I can come up with... 92.3--The classic rock station. I listen to this one a lot, but they tend to play too much Led Zeppelin. They devote a half hour every night at 6:30, called Stairway to Seven, where they play nothing but Zep. Plus the fact that they play 'em occasionally during other times of the day and night. Of course, they do manage to play other groups. Journey, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Joplin, Beatles, Hendrix...It's a nice mix. 95.1--This used to be a "lite" station. They'd play Whitney, Celine, Kenny Rogers, etc. They've recently changed their format a little, and I've heard Avril Lavigne (or however that's spelled), Staind, and Nickelback recently. But they still edit out the bad words. For instance, Avril's "I'm With You" has the line "It's a damn cold night". On this station you hear "It's a (muffled noise) cold night". LOL! 97.3--This station has been around forever with the same format--Top 40. I find myself listening less and less to it, cuz they play the same songs over and over again. I can be in my car at 9 in the morning, and some song will come on. Then I'll be back in at 3 in the afternoon, and they'll play the same song I just heard earlier that day. Kind of annoying. 98.9--This is pretty hard rock--Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, etc, and unless I'm in the mood to do some head banging, I don't turn this station on a lot. 101.7--The Oldies station. They tend to play a lot of 50's and 60's, which is ok when I'm in the mood for it, but I wish they'd play more 70's music, cuz then I'd probably never shut it off. LOL! They do have the occasional "70's Weekend" though, and I hear the great 70's tunes that I grew up with. I love that! 103.9--This is a mix of just about everything. I probably listen to this station the most. New rock, new pop, and 80's and 90's stuff too. And "Commercial free" Mondays. All music. All day long. This is also the station that I won those 2 Evanesence tickets, and the free pizzas, and the free comedy club tickets a few months ago. Maybe that's why I like it so much. LOL! 106.3--This used to be called "Sunny 106". They played Nat King Cole, Engelbert Humperdink, Johnny Mathis, etc. Yuck. I never even had it in my pre-sets. Then I heard that they changed their format a couple of months ago, so I gave it a try. I like it a lot. They play "The 90's and now". And they manage to play a lot of "obscure" 90's stuff, that you don't hear anywhere else. Plus a lot of new songs that aren't being played on the other stations yet. Heard Alanis's new song on this station before I even knew she had a new album out. LOL! And they play Melissa Etheridge quite a bit, so I'm impressed by that. There are a couple of country stations that I stop by every once in awhile. They're both about the same--I hear a lot of Toby Keith and Kenny Chesney on both stations. Needless to say, I don't listen to either station very much. There are a few other stations around, but they play a lot of rap, and I just can't get into much of that, so I pretty much have to skip those. Guess that's it!

We don't have a lot of good radio stations around here. There are three local stations that I listen to, some more than others. There's the top 40 station, which gets really boring if you listen to it more than two hours consecutively. They play mostly the same thirty or thirty-five songs over and over again all day. Yesterday they were pulling out some really great mid-to-late '90s stuff. It was a treat. That rarely happens. We have two country stations, one I listen to more than the other. We have one called K Country which is usually pretty good. They used to have this thing on Saturdays called Double Play where they would randomly play two songs back-to-back by the same artist throughout the day. I used to love that because Reba got pretty decent play then. They play a pretty good variety of country on here as well. The other country station, The Big Dawg, is just okay. They play a lot of newer country and feature a lot of Nascar stuff. I don't listen to it much, needless to say. Every now and then, I can pick up a couple other stations on my car radio. One is another top forty station that does this thing called Quixsie Cafe around lunch every weekday. They used to do all '80s music, but now they've broadened it to '60s through '90s. That's pretty cool. Then there's also a sort-of rock station that I listen to sometimes. I've heard everything from Stevie to Bette to the Mac to the Spice Girls. It's a really solid station, but it rarely comes in on my radio. I don't have very good reception. Anyway, that's basically it.

Except for when I was a kid and a brief period in college when I worked at the college station, I have never been a radio listener. I've always preferred listening to tapes, cds, and records.
Anyway, a few months ago (coinciding with an increase in my work commute) I gave myself a challenge - I would listen to the radio for at least 30 minutes a day. I would reacquaint myself with various stations and discover new ones.
It's been a pretty cool experiment that's made my crappy commute much more bearable. I have a crazy eclectic musical taste that ranges far and wide so no one station is going to be appealing. Here are the Seattle stations that I tried out:
The NPR ones - there's one (KPLU) that plays great jazz in the evenings, and another (KUOW?) that plays Bluegrass which can be very refreshing.
103.7 (KMTT) This station's nickname is "The Mountain". They're an interesting station. They play what they call "adult rock" and call themselves a progressive station. They play modern folk rock from stars and up and comers. They also play what traditionally falls under classic rock but not a lot of it. They also play 80s stuff from Costello, The Police, Joe Jackson, Nick Lowe, and Talking Heads. If any station fits my needs the best it would probably be this one. If any of you are familiar with the famous San Francisco station KFOG then you know what types of stuff they play.
96.5 KROC This is exactly like the famous original KROC in LA. This station used to be Seattle's 80s station that I would occasionally listen to for my Loverboy, Night Ranger, 38 Special fix but they changed formats sometime last year when I wasn't paying attention. In general most of the stuff they play on here is not my style anymore. I'll occasionally listen to their retro 80s metal weekend show.
106.9 KWRM WARM 106.9 is the AC/Lite Rock station. They play anything and everything from Martina McBride to Mariah Carey to Marvin Gaye to Celine Dion to NSync as long as it's "soft".
89.5 - I don't know the call letters. This station is for the folks that like the newest dance music. I occasionally don't mind this stuff. It's a station that is VERY popular with the young club scene kids in Seattle. It's run by young kids as a project for a college and highschool in Tacoma, so they're non-profit which is cool.
106.1 (KMSS) KISS plays whatever's hot or top 40 as long as it's not too Adult Contemporary. That means you here anything from hip-hop to Jessica Simpson to Nickelback. I like the morning show hosts so that when and why I listen to this.
Overall my experiment has been fun and I've been introduced to new music that I like that I probably wouldn't have heard.

I think I mentioned this before when we were sharing our YL memories - If you had asked me a few years ago whether I thought I knew a lot about music I would have said "no". I've always liked various styles of music but I just didn't think about it very much at all. Music was always playing in my house growing up and in college all we did was listen to music because it was the cheapest activity. I would say that I learned a lot of what I know from those college marathon listening sessions. In the past couple of years with the ability to download music at the touch of a button I have exposed myself (tee hee) to tons of stuff that I wouldn't have known about or taken the chance on.
