Back in March, I went to visit my Mom in Englewood, FL. She said she found a jazz station that she enjoyed. It happened to be Smooth Jazz 100.1. I think this was an affiliate station. But the station was promoting a concert by Boney James to be held in nearby Sarasota at the end of the month.
Most of the on-air personalities are smooth jazz artists themselves which the station also played. For instance, Paul Hardcastle, Randy Crawford, and Dave Koz all have their own shows. I'm not sure how this is done. But these celebrities do play the music and comment on what they have played. As expected, I heard some music by contemporary jazz artists such as Norman Brown, Kenny G. and Joshua Redman. But also blended in were old standards from Nat King Cole, classic R&B from Glayds Knight & the Pips and even the current hit "No One" by Alicia Keys.
But the most surprising was a song I hadn't heard on the radio in 27 years. The tune was "Sweet Baby" by George Duke. This was a top 40 hit in the summer of 1981. I'm sure some fellow clickers may be more familiar with his work than I. I'm curious if this song is available on itunes. I wonder if anyone else can remember this track as well?
By the way, I heard the same song again, later that same day!

Paul Hardcastle's and Norman Brown's shows are aired on one of the jazz stations here, KMYT, but I didn't realize Randy Crawford had her own show as well - that's interesting. Mindi Abair also does a show on other stations called Chill with Mindi Abair that features some of the "cool/fusion jazz" that wouldn't normally be played in the smooth jazz format. Dave Koz used to be a morning DJ on KTWV out of L.A., and as you said, still has a weekend show. It airs here early Saturday mornings.
Most of the smooth jazz stations belong to one of several corporate owners: Infinity, Clear Channel, etc. and share playlists. There are some who are still independent, though.
Yes, I remember Sweet Baby quite well from summer '81, and I've always loved it. I have the 45 and also an mp3. The album it's from, The Clarke/Duke Project, was one of the most successful jazz albums of the '80s, so I'm pretty sure iTunes would have it. It gets some play on the jazz stations here also.
